Habs NHL Draft discussion: Shane Wright, Logan Cooley, Juraj Slafkovsky, David Jiricek, Simon Nemec

As the 2022 NHL Entry Draft approaches, the Montreal Canadiens are likely but NOT guaranteed to pick Shane Wright with their first overall pick, however, the top prospects are worth a closer look for any team picking in the top 5-7 slots. Juraj Slafkovsky, Logan Cooley, David Jiricek, Simon Nemec and Matthew Savoie are all touched upon in our discussion with Russ Cohen and Rachel Donner of Locked On Flyers.

Up first is the likely first overall pick in Shane Wright, Scott and Laura are still adamant that Wright is the proper choice for the Montreal Canadiens in the upcoming draft. Russ also breaks down what makes Wright such a talented player, from his on-ice vision to his ability to be a leader for his OHL team off the ice as well. After that it’s time for a discussion around Logan Cooley, who has the on-ice talent to be a challenger for a top three overall pick as well.

The hosts also discuss the pair of defenders in Simon Nemec and David Jiricek, and while Montreal isn’t in a spot to draft one of them right now, they represent intriguing options if the Canadiens do decide to trade up. What makes Simon Nemec tick? How has Jiricek’s physicality helped endear him to prospective teams in the draft?

To wrap it all up, the four hosts debate the narrative surrounding Juraj Slafkovsky potentially going first overall over Shane Wright. Both Russ and Scott are in agreement that Slafkovsky has a ton of overall talent, but just isn’t the fit the Canadiens need right now. They also debate the news that apparently Slafkovsky is open to playing centre, something he hasn’t done in several years, evoking some memories of Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s draft year.

  1. all of Ontario and the around gthl knows the name Shane Wrightd, and don mill 03, Shane Wright was playing underage on arguably the most dominant gthl team of this decade.. 1st rounders like Brennan Othmann and Brandt Clarke along with other show picks and college commits.. Wright was hands down the leader and best player on that team as an underage earning exceptional status so he can play in the O a year early… as a 15 year old rookie in the OHL he scored 40 goals winning ROTY and then going to the U18 as an underage captain dominated the tournament winning gold .. after his u18 showing he was ranked the most elite prospect in the last several years.. he had a so called "down year, " but despite his slow start and missing time for the juniors he still managed to finish top 8 in league scoring while rounding out his defensive game as yet still an underager on his team (believe he's eligible for 3 more year) point is comparing his numbers imagine him in year or two from now… he's by every statistic and intangible at the very top of this class and he's as elite as any prospect can get everybody around the gthl knows this is a slam dunk pick for the canadiens

  2. You guys sure are getting a Ton of Mileage out of a non decision.
I can't wait for the next 2 weeks of the same Crap

  3. Saw Wright interview, seems quite confident and comfortable 👌. Logan Cooley has a high compete level in all 3 zones. Also there is one of the deepest draft of D-Man. #Habs keep thier picks. If Dvorak and Petry, are traded for picks, extra first, 2nd pick in this draft. Wow, great potential 👏 for Habs to 🍔 hamburgular the Nhl 2022 draft. #Punintended.

  4. guys If he stays Healthy… Guhle can certainly be a NUMBER 1…. He is everything he should be and MORE…. Just named MVP. I watched every Oil King Game this playoff… I am sleep deprived being in Halifax…. This Guy is better then ALLLL of them He is Mean, he skates very very well. He is smart…. he can play offence and defence…. watch HIM…. He is not a BEAST….. He is a BEAST on Steroids…..

  5. Lambert has dropped from 3 to all over the board and the reason is his junior coaching that now demands a strict system that MSL opposes and correct quickly. Ideal challenge that will yield a star player. GHG!!! Need to move up a few positions and get 2 for the future…..

  6. it is much easier to get a top forward almost every draft but there is not always an excelent prospect on D.
Nemec is the best choice this year overall

  7. Brad Lambert was coached by the system we have moved from to MSL and we should now draft him as he drops from 3rd over because the drop in production. So use the people that could bring us Lambert with our rebuild like Detroit's draft pick. Offer P ETRY, Hoffmsn, or Armia, and our 23rd pick we get a solid draft pick.

  9. I think people should realize that there is a legitimate chance that Cooley is the pick over Wright. I think Cooley has higher offensive potential, has yet to fully develop, and offers the same two-way game Wright does. I really believe in Cooley at 1st overall.

  10. Would skating be improved for Wright by the skills development people. And AmeriKans love to leave in free agency. Is Poulin the woman who spanked all the players with speed.

  11. One thing to consider; the kraken really like Ryker Evans, their 2nd round pick last year. Evans plays a very similar game as Nemec…a puck caring smooth skating defenseman. I think they go Jiriceck.

  12. Rachel Donner brought a good point! I been saying for weeks that I would love the Habs to trade up to get a 2nd top 5-6 pick to select David Jiricek! Jiricek+Romanov could be a good longterm first pair, with Guhle and Barron 2nd pair with Harris on the 3rd pair

  13. 21:25 well, they were. Best players in EU were there. Such as Krejci, Cervenka, Vatanen, Manninen, all the russians, Nordstrom, Wallmark…and he was the best of the bunch.
