The ONLY way Sharks would trade Tomas Hertl

Tomas Hertl is having an outstanding contract year with the San Jose Sharks, but what will happen before next season? Can/will he remain on the team that drafted him?

  1. Yeah, I agree not to trade Hertl if you want to keep him. It’s fun to think about loaning him out to another team and getting some high end prospects in return. But the Sharks never traded away Marleau or Couture, they worked on resigning them. I think they’ll do the same with Hertl.

  2. It really depends on if Hertl thinks the sharks can really contend for a cup soon. He has stated publicly that he wants to go to a team where he has a chance to win. If there’s an offer on the table from a team that he feels like can make a legitimate push he might take it.

  3. Unfortunately I don’t think this team and organization has the allure or level of respect it once did. It’s no longer a destination that players around the league have circled as where they want to go. Thus it’s hard to keep your current stars as well. Hertl may want to stay for personal reasons but knows for career ones he probably better off departing.

  4. If the Sharks want to re-build….. Let him go cause they aren't winning anytime soon.
He is an amazing player and he deserves to get Paid accordingly.
I see the Sharks trading him.

  5. Hertl traded and I will stop watching the Sharks until DW is gone. It's probably best for his career to get a chance to play on a team that's more stacked but doesn't mean I have to enjoy his departure. Will always be a Hertl fan regardless of where he ends up.

  6. Proper context here I think is the Joe Pavelski situation in 2019. Pavelski had just completed his 5 year contract at $6 million per year, and was a UFA on the market. But the Sharks let him go (very stupidly in retrospect), and Pavelski signed in Dallas instead for $7 million for 3 more years. Why couldn't the Sharks afford to pay their captain and key offensive player enough to get him to stay?

Pavelski set a precedent for the Hertl contract situation as follows. Both players were up for their biggest pay off or peak contract, and at prime career points. Both are thinking about playing for a Stanley Cup Contender, making it all the way. Are the Sharks able to develop from a Wild Card playoff spot contender into a Stanley Cup Contender in the next 3 years? Hertl has to take a hard look at the prospects and Barracuda team mates coming up to fill in this season and use his hockey IQ to decide whether he wants to lead this group of younger players.

The departure of Evander Kane means it is more likely that Hertl will stay. But if other players like Mario Ferraro are not signed to pay raises and some more trades are made to improve the team, Hertl staying is less likely. Putting him on a line with Meier and Barabanov was a great move by Bob Boughner and perhaps that line's success will be the best way to keep Hertl in a Sharks uniform for another contract. The more stable the team chemistry becomes in the Sharks dressing room in the last half of the season, the more likely that Hertl will stay as the future will look bright.

What is Hertl worth in terms of salary? It seems somewhere in the $8-9.5 million range per year, but for how many more years? If he has a really good season this year, I think that he might get an 8 year contract for over $68 million (about $8.5 million cap hit). He is also 28 years old, so that would take him to 36 years old and cover most of his prime years. With inflation and NHL business model going down the drain, it is really hard to know what to expect in the next round of UFA contracts. Hertl may be the most sought after UFA this year and be subject of a bidding war between teams that need a steady scorer. He might want to negotiate a 5 year contract due to all the uncertainty. It would be great not to lose him like Pavelski in 2019.

  7. Hertl has become my favorite Shark so I really hope they don’t trade him. I think his entire career should be with team teal

  8. I think trading Hertl, (and Burns if possible) is best for the team long term. Vlassic and his awful contract are going nowhere. Karlsson isn’t going anywhere. Couture is the captain, not going anywhere. That leaves the pending UFA (with two major knee injuries) as the odd man out. If they can get a good return for him, and get rid of Burns’ awful contract ($8 million until he’s 40!!!), they will have valuable cap space and can actually start rebuilding and drafting for the future. It sucks, I get it, no one wants to see Hertl gone, but if we’re talking about building a legit contender, they need to start moving some big names out and start getting good prospects/draft picks in return. They’re not going to win with this core of Couture, Hertl, Burns, Vlasic and Karlsson. They just aren’t good enough. Full stop. They’re all past their primes. Yes Couture and Karlsson are still good players, but also they’re past their primes, but can still be valuable to the sharks as the new guys start taking on bigger roles.

  9. As a fan of the Rangers, seeing if there’s news about Hertl. Even if he says he will resign in SJ, teams have to be smart managing assets. Guys leave teams even after stating they only want to come back and the team is left with nothing. Islanders lost their Captain Tavares and got zero return. They could have traded him, acquired assets, and resigned him in the off-season. SJ FO could do the same.
