The comment about Dubas and the locker room was really on point. He lost the locker room with Guentzel (Guentz is a winner, those don't grow on trees)….and the Ned situation….but on top of that the Malkin comment at the season closing presser. He threw Malkin, a legacy player and part of the core, under the bus to protect his trade acquisition that underperformed in Reilly Smith. I thought that was brutal, and I think it is not spoken enough about. Dubas has a vision of himself probably not based in reality, and I think everyone around him got convinced of it, but as Shannahan found out, and I credit him for this since he chose Dubas over Lamereillo and Hunter who made all their big draft selections, and let him walk.
One more comment I will make to show why I don't trust him as a team constructor. He spent 6.4 million on Johnsson, Johnstone, Hinostroza, Nieto, Butcher, koppanen, pullijarvi who produced less than 5 goals.
That 6.4 million could have gotten you Bunting if you liked him and had money left over.
Or the guys I would have loved them signing, Glendening, Geekie, and Nyqvist, would have given you just under 60 goals for your bottom six.
Dubas' MO îs trying to be smarter than he is, take flyers on lots of gambles in hopes of one striking gold (and in the process making him look good).
He let Hyman (50 goal scorer) walk so he can sign Kase and Bunting ( a guy he knew from the OHL). Kase was a complete flop and Bunting was good in TO for half the time he was there, he eventually wore out his welcome there.
I think people build him up to be more than he is, so far, an average GM, who somehow is the President of a hockey team without ever spending more than 5 years as a GM in this league.
Dubas is stupid with his signings (Jarry, Graves, Acciari, Eller) and it bites him one season after. He was stupid with signings in Toronto giving top contracts for a bit above average players, which means that he is bad at signings generally.
Dubas trapped himself here like he did in Toronto
Let's not forget about Gauthier in Wheeling. It wouldn't be a bit surprising if in 3-4 years it's a Blomqvist – Gauthier duo at goaltending
I really hope that Jarry can be traded and Ned can start with Bloomqvist as 1B/2 next year.
Toronto – hyper(non)ventilated
You all cried for dubas last year, you got what you asked for. Nothing changes if nothing changes. “He’s an analytical guy” good, let him use his analytics to undo his mess like the other GM. Absentee ownership, inept management, as if his resume from Toronto was stellar. Look at GMJR in Vancouver fixing that team. Until our multi title Gm, president, manager, director, associate, officer, makes a smart change, enjoy us being the Toronto Penguins. Big dollar signings trapped in the organization. Again, you all got what you asked for as I said Dubas wasn’t the answer. 🤷♂️
It would have been nice if jarry earned the contract he clearly didn't deserve
Jarry isn't the problem. The team stinks. We won cups with mediocre goalies.
Jarry will never become that guy.his head isn't screwed on straight.
Ned/Blomqvist. The only winning combo they can have next season.
Regardless of whether or not Dubas ends up with egg on his face, he owes the players a Fighter in net.
The book is out, and Jarry is not the guy that will put the team on his back. It's not a talent thing, it's a character thing.
It's Ned and Joel or bust
With all due respect, what would a conversation with Sid have done? Other than exacerbate the disappointment of trading Jake in the first place and Sid’s disapproval being amplified. I think how it was conveyed was the best case scenario to decrease the amount of headache and preserve some diplomacy between player and GM.
i remember where i was when i heard the news about the jarry contract. i grabbed my chest
Boy, DK, this feels an awful lot like cold, cold water…! 😬 well, if the team is stuck with a perfectly mid goalie, maybe we could acquire someone like McNabb in Vegas, he blocked like a maniac in front of Logan Thompson last night. Or are we also stuck with Ryan Graves… oh crap
Dubas put himself in a Jack Johnson situation with Jarry.
Welcome to theBurgh,,,Home of little goalies.
ya that Jarry contract will go down as the worst Dubas ever did I hope, if they get rid of Ned because of it Dubas should be fired
DK, you’ve out done yourself. I think you might win the award for the most insanely horrific comment section of a video in 2024. It’s unreal how many little keyboard GMs we have that know how to fix this team. It’s going to be hilarious when Toronto wins a cup and everyone’s foot is 8 inches down their throat. Dubas had one year to try and fix an abysmal team.. he made some mistakes forsure but some good things happened too.. suck it the fuck up. A bunch of pathetically fake, fair weathered fans is what we have here.
My opinion. "Yes, he owed that to Sid." Because Sid is Sid. And also knowing he has to renew Sid's contract this summer. That having said: I don't dislike Dubas. I want myself to believe he's the right guy for this job. Sofar, he has been pretty transparent and I do like the insights he's been giving about the way he thinks and operates.
This is what happens when you hand out five year contracts to undeserving players.
Jarry has to go.
Ned’s goaltender stats were exactly the same as Jarry’s. Which were lousy. Yes he had a much better win loss record but that’s a team stat. Dude is an nice story but he’s not a #1 and neither is Jarry. The team is not a contender. Get Blomqvist up and let him may in the nhl. Just stop pretending a window is still there. It’s over. Accept it and move on.
When Guentzel was traded, management signaled that they thought the playoffs were out of reach. Is it possible that the plan was to sit Jarry to let him rest and allow Ned advertise himself in free agency? I don't think I've ever heard of a back-up goalie playing 13 straight games being visibly tired unless you have zero faith in your #1. Jarry had a few rough spots this year, but wasn't terrible overall. Ned/Blomqvist would be the ideal pairing, but Pens would have to eat some of Jarry's contract in a trade.
