Penguins eliminated: Is Mike Sullivan safe? Could Erik Karlsson, Tristan Jarry be dealt?

On Jason Mackey’s First 10 podcast, the Post-Gazette sports columnist reacts to the Penguins being eliminated from Stanley Cup playoffs contention and ponders what comes next for the club. Is coach Mike Sullivan safe despite not winning a playoff series with the core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang in six years? Could defenseman Erik Karlsson be moved by GM Kyle Dubas over the offseason? What about goalie Tristan Jarry after he was benched in favor of Alex Nedeljkovic over the final weeks of the regular season?

Jason tackles those questions and more, including: Was Pirates manager Derek Shelton correct to pull starter Jared Jones after five innings in a loss to the New York Mets on Tuesday? What’s happened to the club’s offense? And how has South Fayette prospect Justin Watson found himself in so many Super Bowls lately?

  1. Just because Sullivan can be hired in 5 minutes doesnt mean he is still a fit for the Penguins. They need to change coaches

  2. Jarry is the issue and always has been. He has a couple nice games and everyone thinks he’s great and he’s really not. There’s a reason Ned becomes the starter and the team takes off.

  3. Pushing a guy past a reasonable limit to win a game in April is one thing. Stopping him at a completely arbitrary limit because you don't CARE if you win a game in April is… HOW DO YOU HAVE A JOB WHEN PEOPLE MUCH SMARTER THAN YOU ARE UNEMPLOYED.

  4. Jarry needed to play vs Boston. Ned had struggled vs Boston earlier in the year and he was gassed. Terrible coaching to ride Ned into the ground. He needed one night off during that crazy run.

  5. How many more chances are we going to give Sully? The dude has not adapted and look at any breakdown of his systems between 2016 and now. They havent changed. The guy has been figured out and has his favorite players. I love Sully for the memories hes given us, but its time to pull the plug.
