Lance Armstrong is to be interviewed by Oprah Winfrey on 17th January, and in this video David Walsh discusses his 2001 interview where he asked Lance about doping.

We also asked David if he thought Lance would ever give a tell all interview – this was before the announcement that Armstrong would appear on Oprah on 17th January – and while Walsh thinks he should and that it is necessary for Armstrong to do so to rebuild his life, there are practical difficulties.

What do you think? Will Lance confess to anything on Oprah? Let us know in the comments.

This is one of our series of seven exclusive videos with David Walsh on Lance Armstrong, where he answers many questions relating to Armstrong and to his book “The Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit Of Lance Armstrong” which can be bought here: http://gcn.eu/VQzWTj

  1. As an athlete Lance had huge conviction and self belief, which was related to him being a bully and having a massive ego. Even after the truth has come out and this meteoric fall from grace, I cannot see him admitting any level of guilt on Oprah, he is just so used to lying, managing interviews and shutting questions down. For Lance, he convinced himself long ago, and that is all that matters

  2. He has to do an interview if he ever wants to have a life. He has kids, and he cannot put them through a life of being on the run everywhere his face turns up. In a way, he has no choice, unless he wants to buy an island, and put up a barb wire fence, like a drug cartel ring leader. He has to do this to get out of a self created prison of lies.

  3. It would be impossible to eradicate LA's positive influence on the cycling world. He remains a hero in my mind …and always will.

pls chk out my own "Psychedelic Cycling" video …shot in sunny Edinburgh! (blatant plug! sorry)

  4. Funny thing is, Lance got his cancer from using steroids – so it was Karma.

Then Lance used the punishment for his steroids, for even more self-serving purposes – until his lies and self-absorption finally backfired on him.

I wonder what Oprah has to shed any tears about, when listening to Lance?

  5. Orpah ("I did your drug" during sweeps week) the whale has no soul herself, so it's two media sluts trying to worm their way into your house. Expect the worst.

  6. His lawyers told him t hold out until the 7 years passed after the Texas Court case – after which period of time a re-trial is invalid – hence, Lance had to keep the lie going.

  7. I'm probably going to get blasted for this. But… I can finally respect Lance. As a human, not an athlete. It doesn't matter if his intentions for confessing were less than sincere. He still confessed. Everything will be stripped from him. Also, something like this doesn't just happen. the UCI KNEW! But the money was bigger than honesty.

Also. Remember he's a human. And everyone deserves at least a tiny chance to redeem himself.

  8. Let me get this strait Lance Armstrong takes steroids and raises 470 million dollars for charities by riding a bike and people are mad at him. To be honest with you guys I think we would be better off focusing our anger towards the scrawny no charity money raising Tony Hawk and his skate board.

  9. And how right we where!!! But if I where in his shoes I would never admit to anything more than was already proven or could be proven by those who knew and there fore also anything more than I absolutely had to.

  10. Having watched the Oprah "interview", I would have to disagree with you about his confession. He admitted to doping in years where the statute of limitations had passed. He did not confess to anything in the last 7 years because he can get prosecuted. He should still be prosecuted for the slanderous comments he made about various people who told the truth. And the money he got from the Sunday Times should be repaid with interest.

  11. you are clearly not an athlete or sports person. As Nicole Cook says, she was robbed of so many medals by drugs cheats who beat her then got found out, she worked just as hard as them and don't forget that. How many genuine cyclists did Lance rob from winning? No he's not the only one who did it he was part of a ring, but he took a lot of credit which wasn't due, and robbed many genuine not doping cyclists of their dream. drug chears are a disgrace to sport. period.

  12. Most pro cyclists dope, as do most pro's in any athletic sport. It's idiotic to think otherwise.

  13. at least he told people that he cheated instead of lying forever until he dies;this man had the courage to tell that he cheated and may god bless and forgive him 🙂 thank you for telling the truth lance I appriciate it

  14. You're right, it doesn't make it right. However in the eyes of a pro in any athletic sport they feel they have to dope to erase the disadvantage with the rest of the field, rather than using drugs to get an unfair advantage. My point is simply they are all lying cheats, most just don't get caught.

  15. As a German Biochemist Ph D – what is the sense of any "testing"? What??? To PROVE! When you can PROVE. When you can not Prove? What then? You can Accuse! Spanish Inquisition. Most are guilty of something. What about black magic? cursing the competitors…When the Devil helps…??? Even the worst Dopers are true heroes – risking their Lives – and may be haunted for the rest of their Life. We LOVE evil stories…the core of the entire Cycling business…Ullrich and Armstrong got me into Endurance Sports – no matter how criminal they were. An entire Era is demonized now…That is so much worse than the crime of Doping! Ruined the Sport…I do not watch any Tour de Freance anymore. Game over.
