To everyone who downvoted me every time I mentioned that Oshie’s wife needs to tell him to stop playing because his back is so bad he can’t play with his kids, here it is straight from the horse’s mouth.
I’m no doctor, but I don’t see how any legitimate medical professional could make a guarantee like that. I’ll miss him, but he still has the rest of his life to live.
yallcaps
Oof. That’s rough. Glad he got his 1,000th game and a chance to celebrate him, but this would be a sad way to go out.

Man…. Just retire so you can still be an active dad with your kids. Life is deeper than hockey.

I love Oshie, I have loved watching him play for the Caps and I will always remember his shootout in Sochi and when he and his dad hoisted the cup. That said, I really want him to retire – he’s got 4 young kids who need him healthy. He’s done enough for us, I hope he rests.
King_richard4
peeing in bottles on the floor because you can’t move your back is not something a 36 year old man should be going through.
msivoryishort
Jeez that’s brutal. Could see him going on to coach or something
christianitie
That’s horrific. I know getting his thousandth game was important to him, but this makes it sound like someone should have stepped in and told him no, re-evaluate after this season. Quality of life after hockey could potentially be more important than career milestones. I am not a doctor and this is not based on medical training, but reading this gives me a very strong impression that he should not have been allowed to finish out the season.

One of my favorite caps but it’s time to retire

Dude, as much as we all would love to see him come back, he needs to be able to pick up his kids. There’s absolutely no shame in hanging em up when that’s on the line, especially after the career Oshie’s had. It’s a hard decision to make but it really looks like retirement might be the best option. Come back in a front office role or something if you don’t wanna step away completely, but he can’t keep risking serious injury especially when he’s raising a family
Unfair_Fact711
Time to step away and look after the health Osh. The back is never gonna get better trying to grind through an 82 game season. Thanks for everything

Dude was moving like a grandpa in the last game.
Lol the downvotes? I have a similar back issue and could easily tell he was feeling it the last game. As in he should hang up the skates to be with his family and focus on his health. Sheesh
fuzzypyrocat
I really hope he comes back next season, just for one game, so he can get a real and proper send off and thank you from the fans. He helped carry us to the cup and he deserves to hang them up and be with him family, but a lone skate off at the end of a playoff sweep is such a shitty goodbye for someone who has given us so much. I hope he puts himself and his family first, and that Caps fans will love him endlessly

Can’t wait to see him on opening night. lol.

That sounds awful. Oshie is a warrior, but he should think about his quality of life.

Love Oshbabe as much as anyone but he needs to retire. Still want him to step away from the game at a time he can still be there for his wife and kids
Mister_Dwill
Extending him and backy were bad moves in all honesty. Love them both, but this is a business.

My god. We’re going to have a Hall of Fame LTIR next season

This is something where the Caps’ medical staff and even Brian MacLellan need to have a direct and tough conversation with Oshie about what his priorities in life should be. I’m sorry but 1 more year of hockey on this team is not worth further harming his long-term quality of life.
It’s clear that Oshie is the type of guy to want to play through nearly everything. Other folks need to step in at this point and say enough is enough, we’ve got to prioritize your health and wellbeing.

Osh, baby, it’s time. We love you. We will always love you. But we want you to be able to play with your children and have a healthy life post-NHL. If you need to hang it up a year early, we’re all okay with that. There’s still a place for you in Capitals Hockey; maybe the ice just isn’t it anymore.
Be careful. We love you.

I love Osh and am grateful for everything he’s done for the team, but it’s time to retire.
