In What Ways Was This Season a Success for the New York Islanders? How Was It Not?

Today we discuss in what ways the New York Islanders 2023-24 season was a success and in what ways it fell short of expectations.

Plus we pay tribute to two long-time players who may have played their last game with the Isles in Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck and we discuss how the playoffs illustrated the gap between the Isles as a fringe playoff team and the Carolina Hurricanes who are a legit Stanley Cup contender.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Huge 🚩today came and went and no news on Lou which means he’s staying. It’s going to be rinse and repeat and isles will continue to be stuck in purgatory aka being a fringe playoff team. With the allstar game coming to ubs in 2025 no way isles blow this up for 2025 they want it sell tickets and make money. At the end of the day this is also a business

  2. lol, that thumbnail, looks like jgp does not want to hear what roy is saying!

same results as last season is not success, despite what lou or anyone may say otherwise. the last three seasons has shown that "believing in this core" is a farce. ownership needs to make changes now, starting with the gms both here and in bridgeport. otherwise it will be more of the same, again and again and again.

  3. I wouldn't say it was a success. Just ended right as predicted. 13 playing at a ppg pace first time since rookie season was a success. 14, 29 both played to expectation. 21 went above that hitting 30 goals. 8 putting up 70 pts. on d was a success. That is about it. 30 didn't live up to expectation after big contract. Not much success after that. 32nd ranked pk was the biggest failure. 3 is slowing down not shut down anymore. 6 struggles with him. 18 is a waste of roster spot. 15, 17, 53, do their thing as they slow down. 27 played well in playoffs but only has little left at 2 more years. 10 showed a little promise then disappeared. 44 adds no offense anymore. 28 was alright. 2 a pleasant surprise waiver find. 40 got isles some crucial wins late but is up and down at his age.15 and 17 have been warriors but it is time to move on and make room for some fresher young legs. Unless 17 comes back by luring his running mate in jrs. #91 in tb to play for isles. i don't see anything else isles can do now. No splashes, no nothing this off season.

  4. I will be very clear. When your spoiled like we were with our dynasty , the dynasty set a precedent like it or not that WINNING THE STANLEY CUP is the only option every single year everything else is a failure. Thats what our dynasty has done. So NOTHING was a success this year because we did not win the cup. There is no greater disparity from success to failure than us in any of the 4 professional sports. We went from 19 consecutive playoff series won a record that will never be broken by any team in any sport to one of only 2 teams in the nhl, the other being the maple leafs that has not had a finals appearance in almost 40 years now. Every team that was in the nhl in 1985 has had atleast one finals appearance except the new york islanders and toronto maple leafs.WE WENT from living in the most gorgeous ocean front mansion on montauk point to being homeless.

  5. Neil Best had an interesting commentary in Newsday today. The Islanders are in the worst position that a professional sports franchise can be in. They are a mediocre team so they’re not going to get a top draft pick, they have older players with long-term contracts, and only two other teams have less cap space. It’s hard to disagree with any of that and I don’t know what it’s gonna take to make this team competitive. I’m glad the Islanders are proud they made the playoffs. But I don’t think that’s the right emotion to have. If this was a young group of guys who never made the playoffs before I can understand it. But this team is a veteran team and we’re supposedly “built for the playoffs”.

  6. WAKE UP & GET REAL! This season wasn't a success. Lamoriello stood pat with a team that lost more games than they won. Roy isn't an NHL coach. The only positives were Brazil, Palmieri, Dobson, Hornet, Nelson, Cizekas, MacLean and Goaltenders. The rest of the roster is replaceable. It's time for a major shakeup.

  7. Gil, I don’t consider this season a success. If not for the Bettman loser points we’d be Columbus. I wanted us to miss the playoffs so hopefully the property brothers would get rid of senile Lou. The days that Lou is the smartest guy in the room are long gone. Over 20 years and he’s won nothing. I’ve hated him for decades and it bothers me how he’s burying the franchise.. I don’t want the participation trophy just to make the playoffs. Then to lose to Carolina for the third time in six years. Next seasons roster:
    Casey,Bo,barzy
    Iskhakov,Nelson,palmieri
    Lee,jgp,engvall
    Fasching,Maclean, gauthier
    Romanov,Dobson
    Pelech,pulock
    Reilly/bolduc,mayfield
    Ex:holmstrom,
We have a lot to look forward to with this roster. lol

  8. Perfectly summarised, Gil. I completely agree with both the positives and the negatives, and I also feel the play off series was a microcosm of both. We are a nearly team, likely doing a bit better than we ought to on the good nights, but the flaws shine through on the worse nights. Still credit to the team for having that great run, and even with our supposedly 2nd best goalie. Hope Sorokin's form returns next season.

Lou has done a good job trying to plug our team with stop gap players, but they are also just that, and maybe we should free some space by letting some of them go, as well as some of the regulars. If we can manage to free enough space, getting Mitch Marner would be the kind of star we have been hoping for past few seasons, and then use the youngsters as stop gaps.

  9. Revamp the scouting dept….stop trying to fit square pegs in round holes…invest in a ECHL team…look where the Canes kids come from

  10. Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? On a positive note, THE ISLANDERS DIDN'T QUIT THAT'S HOW THEY'VE BEEN EVER SINCE THEY FIRST MADE THE PLAYOFFS A LONG TIME AGO. On a negative note, I ❤The Islanders to death, but at times, they lacked consistency. It's hard to say at this ⌚., but whatever happens, I wish them both Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck the best of luck. Why was Anders Lee wearing John Tonelli's #27? I thought they retired his number. You're right, The Islanders have lots of holes to fill. HAPPY 🎂 PAUL BOUTELLIER. Hear from you tomorrow, and LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

  11. Monopoly Go makes more money than some of the casinos. It’s a real problem for many people and don’t think locked on should be hyping it up.

  12. Cup or bust several years ago. Have only won 3 playoff games in past 3 years. Lou will double down again and send this team into dark ages. Only positive is that Dobson took a step forward.

  13. Gil, Canes have to beat the Rangers, so the Islanders didn’t die in vain😂. Everything you touched on is painfully true, great show
