How Good Are The 2024 Buffalo Bills Right Now?
On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran’s joined in studio by friend and recurring guest Tone Pucks for a conversation on a handful of topics, including how good they think the 2024 Buffalo Bills are internally and compared to the rest of the league now that the NFL draft has passed.
It’s certainly been an eventful offseason for the Bills—one which has seen significant change. Gone are several veterans and leaders such as Mitch Morse, Tre White, Jordan Poyer, Michael Hyde and Gabe Davis. Of course, the Bills also traded top receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans for 2025 draft capital. They’ve also added free agent talent to the team such as Curtis Samuel, Mike Edwards and Austin Johnson in addition to their draft class highlighted by Keon Coleman and Cole Bishop.
It feels like on paper it’s clear they’ve taken a step back–but is that the reality? The guys both have a variety of opinions on how this team looks as presently constructed and how they stack up against their peers around the league.
Also, with all the NFL draft content taking precedent, the Buffalo Sabres hiring of Lindy Ruff has barely been discussed on this show. That changes today as Tone has plenty of thoughts on Ruff’s return and the state of the Sabres roster. That plus the Boulevard Mall has shut down, learning that a high school football & baseball coach from nearly 35 years ago is still alive and well—and plenty more.

I was more happy about Lindy than the draft. We know the bills will be good I want the sabres to be good finally
McKinley mall was my mall haha
Puchsy was real good I enjoyed his takes.
I figured out why Tone is my favorite guest host. Dude is literally a Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) doppelgänger.
I would lose my shit if he started dropping lines from “The Devil’s Rejects”
Anyway… how good are the Bills going to be this year? It’s all projection based on potential.
Potentially guys like Bernard, Benford, Rousseau, Elam, Rapp, Brown, Shakir, Cook, Kincaid and Torrence can take a step forward. Potentially Allen can improve on his decision making… and potentially none of those things will happen.
I’m looking specifically at the development of Dorian Willams. With the style of defense that Buffalo plays now with these smaller matchup LB’s… it’s inevitable that they are going to get hurt and miss time… especially if they play against teams that like to run the ball. If Willam’s can make the jump in year two it will go a long way in ensuring that we don’t find ourselves in the painful position we were in last season.
McDermott doesn’t only have a long history of developing secondary players but his track record of producing elite LB’s stretches all the way back to his days in Carolina. I’d argue that his LB track record is even more impressive than that of safety and CB.
Success and failure for the coming season will largely come down to injuries as it always does. The Bills over performed on defense last season considering the injuries and I for one don’t believe that Hyde or Poyer were nearly as bad as people say. With what they had at CB and LB for large swaths of the season, yet still managed to hold 11 teams to 21 or fewer points… I’d say that Poyer and Hyde were the only thing that held the defense together.
I also disagree that Brady is a better OC than Dorsey. Dorsey won a lot of games and Allen had the 2nd best season of his career in 2022 under Dorsey. Meanwhile Brady was dog 💩 in Carolina and the offense didn’t look great down the stretch under Joe in “23. The defense carried the team most of that stretch, especially after the trade deadline when Douglas came aboard.
The sample size on Brady is too small and the production, especially in the passing game just wasn’t there to put that much confidence in him.
Fingers crossed though… I hope he works out. I need to see it first before I’m believing.
Tone is so legit. I freaking love his style
