Rod absolutely could get paid more on the open market for another team, but that’s only “being taken advantage of” if Rod wants to move jobs and is being prevented from doing so. He wants to stay in Carolina, he knows that loses him some pay negotiation leverage, and he’s fine with it. At a certain point, particularly when you’re already rich, the extra pay bump is worth less than job satisfaction – don’t know why that’s so hard for media to understand.

I don’t know how many of you have met RBA, and I certainly do not intend to intimate that he and I are buddies, or that we’ve met more than a few times. But as a STH from 2006-2014, I met him several times during that span, and I find the notion that random people on his periphery need to stand up for him utterly laughable.
I’ve led a charmed life, met a lot of important people despite being not important myself. Generals, Governors, Senators, Nobel Prize winners, billionaire CEO’s, Supreme Ct justices. Very, very few of them made an impression on me the way RBA did. Dude is *intense*. Even at a damn perfunctory professional sports team glad handing meet-and-greet, he commanded his corner of the room. You absolutely got the notion that if he looked you in the eye and said give me 20 pushups, you would damn well knock out 20 pushups with perfect form *right then*.
He IS the franchise, period. Everyone from the popcorn vendor to Dundon understands this.

For those who don’t know- he’s much like Kevin, an analyst, commentator, intermission report guy (he wasn’t a former player though)
But he says THE WEIRDEST STUFF. He has the WORST takes, straight from planet Mars. But that’s what generates clicks, clickbait weird stupid stuff that everyone then starts talking about. It generates views, gets traction, has people talking and it works for him and the industry because they want to be talked about.
It seems like Kevin is trying to do that for the NHL.
