Cherry: Maple Leafs should’ve kept Reimer over Bernier & Andersen

Don Cherry joins Baseball Central just in time to discuss the Maple Leafs trading Jonathan Bernier to Anaheim, saying the Leafs should have kept James Reimer in the first place.

  1. unfortunately Bernier was so bad during that time, they had no option. No one would've wanted him lol. Yup. I agree with you Don! I'm still hoping we can get Reimer back lol #wishfulthinking

  2. I think the only reason Cherry is saying Reimer over Anderson is well 2 reasons, 1. Similar stats but Anderson was on the stronger team while Reimer was a Leaf on a BAD Leafs team his entire tenure 2. Reimer LOVED playing in Toronto/handled the media well which is a feat in itself. In any case, Reims over Bernier any day for me. He was my fav goalie since Cujo and badly handled by the Leafs his entire run. I wish him nothing but the best in Florida.

  3. Reimer was traded for Matthews. Leafs keep Reimer then sparks doesn't come up and sparks lost a bunch of games Reimer could've won. Reimer wins those games and bernier plays as good as he did at the end of the season… maybe they don't finish last. they don't finish last they don't have the best odds at Matthews, they probably don't get him. plus he wanted 6 mil don

  4. don cherry with common sense. but not have andersen? i rather just get bernier out and have reimer and andersen in

  5. The Leafs answer in recent times….THE MONSTER ( journeyman ) then came Reimer who in part blew a big 4 goal lead against Boston in a game seven and OMG Bernier yup he is the answer….Again into Cali for an Anderson and soon they will have a draft sensation or a  Free Agent, enough alrerady!

  6. Over the years I have mostly agreed with Don Cherry and respect his opinion but not this time. The James Reimer I watched play for Toronto over the past 6 seasons was not a bona fide number one NHL goalie. He had consistency issues and injury problems in perpetuity. He also was given quite a few opportunities to take on the number one role but never managed to pull it off because of the earlier mentioned reasons.
If anyone thinks that the Leafs could be a contender moving forward with Reimer in net they are kidding themselves. Where it can be argued that Reimer's and Anderson's stats are similar, they are not "right on the money" as Mr. Cherry states. Anderson's stats clearly indicate more consistency in his game. That, if nothing else will be a major improvement.

  7. I think it was because of the fans. The Leaf fans torched him on instagram and twitter. I wish Reimer all the best, God bless.

  8. I agree totally!! They should not have let go of REIMER!!! Way to go Cherry – I am a die hard Toronto fan but that almost did me in when they traded REIMER!!

  9. Don Cherry would build a team that focuses more on players with size than talent. He's on record saying he would have picked Nick Ritchie over William Nylander in the 2014 draft.

  10. Let's get a few things straight: 1) It was Reimer and Scrivens who took the Leafs to the playoffs in an ABBREVIATED season – a season where the leafs never faced any western teams, who in my opinion are superior to the east. I don't think the Leafs ever blamed Reimer for the loss against the Bruins. 2) Reimer never proved he could be a reliable No.1. When the Leafs acquired Bernier in 2013-14, they went with a platoon situation where Bernier was the obvious winner at the end of the day. Don't forget, we were in playoff contention that year up until Bernier got injured, and Reimer then barely won us a game and we fell short. 3) Bernier was undoubtably our No.1 in 2014-15. I agree that last year in 2015-16, Bernier sagged and Reimer looked better than before. So yeah, maybe we were right to part ways with Bernier, but to say we should have kept Reimer over Bernier… AND ANDERSEN??? That's ludicrous. So Leafs fans, lets enjoy Andersen. He's our guy now and in the future.
