Sure Juolevi isn't the most dynamic defenseman, but we need that smart guy on the back end. I'm getting really tired of yelling at my TV for dumb moves by a d-man.
I've never seen the hype about Joulevi. Sure he may have upside potential, but I feel he as just as much potential to be a 5th or 6th D man. There's a legit argument to be had, that he hasn't improved much in the last three seasons, if at all… One look at his numbers reflects this.
This guy at best is a second or third pairing d. I still don't understand how scout evaluated the pick at 5, this one puzzled me to this day still, not saying he's not an NHL dman but there's more justification even in picking the beast and man child in Jake BigCountry, who's clearly at least going to become a dominant physicality as a big piece of service to the future core roster, and as selected also around the same pick, than I sometime think the only reason I can see being that he was a product from a good junior system in the London OHL (maybe harsh, but his numbers there screamed 1st round dman). After this second draft season passed, he may "be" a possible smaller future Blue Chip for the struggling dcore still, yet looking at the way nhl is played today on paper, and young dman numbers in good teams, there's an obvious gap to climb for him to join that stacked caliber of top 4 in the backend lineup contributing on a nightly bases. Hoping for a good turnout for him, but there's inevitably that's feeling for the poor kid already gotten overhyped since the draft and even in today's media, protecting his confidence when describing his overall game as "high IQ with likenesa to some of the other prospects just taking longer to develop, who Benning did not bet the 5th 1st overall pick on a terrible team three year in a roll on you". Yikes.
EDIT: honestly I think just better for him to face the music of the Vancouver fans next season than wait another year when media and fans start attaching the dreaded word 'bust' in regularities :/
He's going to surprise this market in how good he's going to be. Had an excellent first year in the mens Liiga league where he was the best player in the playoffs, also named top 3 player in WJC for Finland. Top pairing potential. If the Canucks can get Noah Dobson in this year's draft you have your top pairing for the next decade.
