On June 8th, 1989, the Pittsburgh Pirates produced one of the greatest first innings in baseball history, jumping out to a 10-0 lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. No team had ever before done so and lost. From there … well, come on, you know where this is going. But you might never guess which road we’re taking to get there.

16:14 like getting bronze in the Olympics
35:21 "Once per leap year." OMG this is my FIRST time watching this video and it's February 29th.

Steve Jeltz was great at one thing. His career 12.2% walk rate is well above the league's 8.5% average across his career. Now its certainly not why he was in the league because nobody cared about walk rate back then, but at least there is some positive aspect of his game.
Honestly there is a very legit reason to complain about Jeltz – not him being bad and DEFINITELY not deserving of abuse, but the fact that he took a slot of so many more deserving minor league players…
Jeltz GOAT
This was awesome!
Steve Jeltz is my neighbor
This is why no unwritten baseball rule about large leads should be respected.
Willie Harris of the ChiSox comes to mind listening to your piece. Nice bit of coverage have to admit da boatofya
Only you guys could get my adhd ass to sit down and watch a video for 8 minutes before discovering who the main character is
Secret Base, I would love to partner with you to discuss Steven A Smith's 17, 3 point shots in a row in a scrimmage claim that he has made. Please give a way to contact you. Thanks
Steve freaking Jeltz . Played during a time when there was a team called the Montreal Expos whom I rooted for. I remember the Expos play by play man saying once of Jeltz ,”All they’re (the Phillies) are asking of Steve is that he catches and throws the ball” . His BA in that particular season (1985 if memory serves me correctly) was .170 to .180 at best. And I’m certain .180 is over generous.
So it’s news to me this fella had a 2 homer game in his career and from each side of the plate to boot. What were the odds of that ever happening!?!?
What if instead of Steve Jeltz he was Steve Jelk and he cranked hogged
This is as nerdy as baseball possibly could be. And I LOVE IT.
biggest yap of all time
At 7:58 https://youtu.be/VfFn4NqQr_U?t=478 the narrator says that Kansas is "more of a football school," but the sport that the University of Kansas is most noted for is basketball.
This is the greatest video of all time
Philadelphia to Pittsburg cross the Appalachian mountains, not the Alleghenies.
Imagine live betting this game when it’s like -10000
I hope Steve Jeltz watches this video someday.
I hope he’s happy, and living well.
It's not that outlandish. If all you score is 10 runs, and score them all in just the first inning, that leaves eight innings for the other team to chip away and win the game. It can happen to anybody.
Watching the second home run with the "It's gooone?!" gives me goosebumps
The worst part about this whole thing is his little blurb about Kansas being a “football” school…when KU is most definitely known for basketball 😂
"Steve Jeltz is closer to Barry Bonds than we are to Steve Jeltz"
Fantastic video! As a Phillies fan born two years before this game, I didn’t even know this happened. It was really fun to hear about this freak occurrence and icing on the cake to be on the winning side of it. Thank you!
34:00 one can observe this route on a map without an artist's rendering of the Earth. 😂
Who's the skinny dude playing left for the Pirates?
Falcons fans can’t even enjoy a video about the Phillies and the Pirates in peace.
If I saw this playing on tv I wouldn’t bat an eye.
Bob Walk won Game One of the 1980 World Series for the Phillies.
Its amazing he had 6 intentional walks in 1989 after having 8 the year before and 32 in his career. For a .210 career batter he sure had a lot of intentional walks given to him. Loved watching him play in Philly back in the late 1980s
Texas A&M Baseball just replicated this game a couple weeks ago. Trailed 9-0 after the 1st inning but ended up winning 19-9
Your videos are Absolutely Amazing. Great graphics and fantastic stats…what a story. Love it
