How to score 10 runs in the first inning and lose | Dorktown

On June 8th, 1989, the Pittsburgh Pirates produced one of the greatest first innings in baseball history, jumping out to a 10-0 lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. No team had ever before done so and lost. From there … well, come on, you know where this is going. But you might never guess which road we’re taking to get there.

  1. Steve Jeltz was great at one thing. His career 12.2% walk rate is well above the league's 8.5% average across his career. Now its certainly not why he was in the league because nobody cared about walk rate back then, but at least there is some positive aspect of his game.

  2. Honestly there is a very legit reason to complain about Jeltz – not him being bad and DEFINITELY not deserving of abuse, but the fact that he took a slot of so many more deserving minor league players…

  3. Only you guys could get my adhd ass to sit down and watch a video for 8 minutes before discovering who the main character is

  4. Secret Base, I would love to partner with you to discuss Steven A Smith's 17, 3 point shots in a row in a scrimmage claim that he has made. Please give a way to contact you. Thanks

  5. Steve freaking Jeltz . Played during a time when there was a team called the Montreal Expos whom I rooted for. I remember the Expos play by play man saying once of Jeltz ,”All they’re (the Phillies) are asking of Steve is that he catches and throws the ball” . His BA in that particular season (1985 if memory serves me correctly) was .170 to .180 at best. And I’m certain .180 is over generous.
So it’s news to me this fella had a 2 homer game in his career and from each side of the plate to boot. What were the odds of that ever happening!?!?

  6. It's not that outlandish. If all you score is 10 runs, and score them all in just the first inning, that leaves eight innings for the other team to chip away and win the game. It can happen to anybody.

  7. The worst part about this whole thing is his little blurb about Kansas being a “football” school…when KU is most definitely known for basketball 😂

  8. Fantastic video! As a Phillies fan born two years before this game, I didn’t even know this happened. It was really fun to hear about this freak occurrence and icing on the cake to be on the winning side of it. Thank you!

  9. Its amazing he had 6 intentional walks in 1989 after having 8 the year before and 32 in his career. For a .210 career batter he sure had a lot of intentional walks given to him. Loved watching him play in Philly back in the late 1980s

  10. Texas A&M Baseball just replicated this game a couple weeks ago. Trailed 9-0 after the 1st inning but ended up winning 19-9
