I will die on the hill that the Leafs weren’t bad for long enough after they got Matthews + didn’t draft enough quality players in 2016/2017 to provide cheap depth coming up behind Matthews/Marner/Nylander. If you look at a lot of teams (like Florida) they were bad/missed playoffs a lot more than the Leafs did. Even Colorado missed after they had MacKinnon and were able to draft high again.
