Hedman, like Stammer, is the heart of this team. I hope he doesn’t end up in the same situation as the captain because I don’t think it’s a very respectful way to treat these players who have meant everything to this franchise.
Also, it’s such a special thing to have players who are so committed to your team. It’s one thing to have elite talent, but to have these amazing players who want to stay here and retire as Bolts is really awesome.

I doubt he will be. This summer should be the last summer where our cap situation is extremely suffocating

2008 first overall pick, 2009 second overall pick. They were the start of arguably the best team in Salary Cap Era.
Stamkos is our greatest (not the best, but the greatest, and it’s not even close) player ever, leads the franchise in Games Played, Goals, Points, and soon to also have Assists.
Hedman is easily our best Dman ever, holds like ever Dman record for us. Norris, Conn Sythme, he has it all.
Captain and Alt Captain for the last decade, and led us to 2 cups, 4 finals, 6 ECF. They are the heart and soul of this team, and it will never look the same without them.
Not to mention, their highest ever contracts were 8.5M/yr and 7.8M/yr respectively. They look way lower contacts to help out the team to remain competitive. Yes there’s the tax advantage, but that’s still very low compared to other superstars.

As much as I love the Lightning, I do think we are an older team that is going to see lots of seasons end like the last two did for several years to come.
With that being said, there is no reason not to sign Stamkos and Heddy to deals that let them stay and retire as Bolts. I’d rather watch the next 4-5 seasons end like these last two have with them on our team than make stupid moves and let them walk. The Lightning are not the same team without the two of them. Heck, they aren’t even washed up, their leadership alone is part of the team’s character, but both of them still being elite is an added bonus.
