Let’s talk about one of former Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning’s (non-ironically) really great moves, that just so happens to be his last trade as GM of the team too: the Olli Juolevi trade with the Florida Panthers, where the Canucks acquired defenceman Noah Juulsen and forward Juho Lammikko.

  1. This trade wouldn’t even exist if Jimbo actually knew what he was doing at the 2016 Draft. Every other GM in the league would taken Matthew Tkachuk over Juolevi.

  2. Canucks new contract.
    Tyler Motte 2.55×4
    Juho Lamiko 975K X 3
    Mathew Highmore 890K X 3
    Brock Boeser 6.55 X 5
    Jack Rathbone 1.125x 2
    Tyler Myers gets traded
    JT Miller 7×5
    Bo 6.5×5
    Hoglander 2.125×3
Do y’all agree or am I over paying pple

  3. Jake was a monster in Jr, that is why they drafted him. He left it there. And Juolevi I thought he would at least be serviceable. I backed him too. At first I thought Lamiko was an AHLer but he kept getting better and playing harder with confidence. I believed Benning traded for warm bodies. One of the few times I was glad I was wrong.

  4. The best trade he ever made is still jt Miller. Didn't look good at the draft when it first went down. But aged really well

  5. To be honest, JB's trades have been above average. His FA signings were more misses than hits but then again, our team wasn't that good /attractive for FAs to take paycuts to play for us (e.g. Laffs)

  6. If I remember correctly, Juolevi was actually the highest defenceman before the draft. The Canucks felt they had a positional need and drafted him. Personally, I did not have a huge problem with the decision to go with Juolevi, but the Canucks could have easily traded down and still got him, and would got something else from whoever that wanted their pick. Instead, Benning drafted a guy who, even if his development panned out and became a serviceable RD for the Canucks, would not have been worth that high of a pick to acquire.

  7. Great trade Benning. I held out hope for Juolevi until he was traded. Lamikko is a big, rough and tumble player with some skill and guts. He could have been a 2nd round pick. Again, Jim built a pretty good team, but couldn't evaluate his coach, and they got drug down. If they make the playoffs, Boudreau should get the Jack Adams. Allvin, please get us ONE top end D man. Big, mean and reliable

  8. This to me was Benning trying to hide the body after he royally screwed up at the draft. As long as Juolevi was in our system it was right under his nose daily how badly he, and his trusted scouts screwed up. As for the rest of his drafting – Virtanen (F), Boeser (A, and I must think that this was Judd Brackett's guy as he was watching the College and University hockey), Pettersson A – but Canucks seemed to prefer Cale Makar, and the guys picked ahead of Petey were expected to go high. I still give them credit for this one. Hughes – A, but we weren't even supposed to be close to getting him. He should have gone in the 3-5 spots, but a few surprise picks by Arizona and Detroit and he fell to us. Same with Podkolzin.

  9. Benning was far from the worst GM in the league during his tenure. He drafted well during the end of his tenue and he did make some pretty good trades / signings (Miller, Garland, Motte, Pearson, etc.). He shot himself in the foot right away by agreeing to not re-build as he should have. Look at the drafting record of basically any other team over the past 10 years and you'll find flop after flop. Definitely wasn't a problem exclusive to Vancouver.

  10. As a lifelong Canucks fan, seeing Yzerman pick Juolevi off waivers scares me. Yzerman is good at spotting talent, and I fear Olli might be kickass as a Red Wing.

  11. Jim Benning did a great job reducing the damage of the Juolevi pick by acquiring Lammikko and Juulsen in return. It does not compensate for the loss of Sergachev, Chychrun, or Tkachuk, but it is far better than nothing.

  12. Your view of the 4 line (especially Lamako) has changed. Awhile back you said he didn’t deserve to be in the line.
