Tony Gallagher on Edmonton vs. Vancouver media battle, Mark Spector invoking him, Oilers vs. Canucks

The guys welcome in Hall of Fame reporter Tony Gallagher, who responds to his name being invoked in an Edmonton column critical of the Canucks media and fanbase. Tony goes over the NHL’s historic negligence and incompetence when governing this organization, and talks about the calls in this year’s edition of the Canucks playoffs.

  1. Gallagher showed he is out of touch with his comments about revenue through Covid. Revenue has grown substantially from the pre-Covid, but the Covid CBA deal made has been recapturing dollars paid out during the pandemic that weren’t earned in the revenue sharing. The escrow was just paid off near the beginning of this season. The value of NHL franchises has doubled in a decade. Classic Undertaker exaggerations. Return to retirement Tony. S&P reveal the age demographic of their audience with this stuff. The end is nigh.

  2. I didn't realize how much a part of my childhood Mr Gallagher was. 54-year old born and bred, arrived here the same year as the Canucks.

  3. ok let's break it down….Reason for Riot number 1: In game 3 Mark Messier crosschecks Momesso from behind into the boards, the textbook description of the checking from behind rule they recently setup that year, supposed to be automatic 5 minute major and a match penalty consisting of 3 game suspension. Call was 2 minutes for crosschecking. If the rule had been properly called Messier would have been out for the series and Canucks win the cup…probably. Reason for Riot number 2: Claude Julien begins to whine and cry saying Canucks are diving all the while the Bruins were punching our guys in the head in the massive amount of scrums in every game, not to mention the Aaron Rome farce of a call. If the bruins get called on penalties for delay of game more often or the other dozens of offenses not called then the Canucks probaly win the cup again. And all this happens because in 1972 the Vancouver fans rightfully booed off the ice team Canada as they completely got hammered by the Soviets thus drawing the ire of Phil Espisito's tender feelings and the league decided that Vancouver was persona non grata for the stanley cup…just my thoughts

  4. Hey Tony that's my line. "Corruption in business, there's corruption in the RCMP……but the NHL is the last bastion of righteousness on the planet." Yeah right. I love Tony.
BTW, where's that goof Shawn Thornton to ambush him mid interview?

  5. They love to tease Vancouver for the riots but anybody who remembers it knows it was about the horrible officiating and Bettman's relationship with Jeremy Jacobs.

  6. That 2011 series came down to two things reffing and Tim Thomas. Marchand punching the Sedins in the face with no calls, breaking Mason Raymond’s back and the Aaron Rome suspension. All tilted in Boston’s favour.

  7. Hearing from Tony again just reminds me that all the true journalists, whether it be sports or news, are being phased out. We're getting fewer people who ask questions and more people with an open, automatic bias and agenda and want to use that to hide the truth. What used to be called journalism is now called conspiratorial or having an agenda. The only agenda should be the truth, to seek it and report on it so that the public can make educated decisions. But nobody trusts the media because they've become increasingly tools of powerful. There's a reason Don Taylor doesn't work for Sportsnet anymore, replaced by far less charismatic, pretty people with personal trainers, dressed in Z Zegna. Nobody cares anymore if you're good at your job like you guys. You have to look like you just came out of a health club and be in your 30s and 40s. The same with the media. Walter Cronkite and Peter Mansbridge could never be news anchors going forward because they don't look like models. We've made great strides in the gender gap and we still have work to do there, but all that doesn't matter if we're just getting pretty people who don't care about reporting facts and asking hard questions. I'm not much for conspiracy theories, but Tony is right.

  8. Love me some Tony Gallagher! Miss hearing his analysis and use of vocabulary. Please bring him on more!

  9. notice that Florida's agm is Gregory campbell, and Sam Bennett managed to avoid suspension for a sucker punch?

  10. As a 12 year old, I started every morning with a bowl of cereal and the province newspaper, flipped to the back page, and I'm quite sure 9 times out of 10 the first article I would've read would've been Tony's. That was 96-97 which everyone will remember was the start of a very dark era for Canucks fans. Thank god I hit puberty just in time to cope.

  11. Missed this guy. I used to hate his opinions. Disagreed with him a lot. But honestly, what a joy to see him now.

  12. Spector needs some education on the 1982 White Towel Incident, which I watched early on in the pandemic as Sportsnet aired old games. Chicago had lost game 1 in double OT and was facing 0-2 going to Vancouver if they lost again, and they came out with major pressure on Vancouver, but were only able to open up a 3-1 lead with 12 minutes left. A mini brawl had filled both boxes and play opened up. A pass to Curt Fraser in front of the net led to a disallowed goal which today would have been allowed with video review; instead, referee Bob Myers removed a Canuck player to the box on a misconduct before the ensuing scrum had ended, leaving an imbalance and more rough stuff. A Vancouver goal turned into a 3 on 3 greatly favouring Chicago based on who was left, and Savard scored, while yet another penalty was being called against Vancouver. That was when the white flags went up. Vancouver won in five, Myers got the rest of the playoffs off.

The White Towel thing is not whining. It simply commemorates a team that ignored a referee either having a horrible night or actively trying to prevent the series from being a possible sweep. For the most part, the 2024 team is concentrating on playing and winning rather than the media circus and the message board craziness. Not every team in the league gets to write a superstar player into their lineup every night, some have to win by building a complete team and finding a way to stop the superstar opponents. All Canuck fans want is for the hypocrisy and bias to end and to be given a fair shake even though we have six or seven really good players instead of two superstars. The missed too many men is not equivalent to the missed high stick on Hughes. The suspension to Soucy is fair, but completely ignoring the reaction crosscheck by Hyman seconds later — carefully excised from many highlight packages so TV talent could foam at the mouth and demand Soucy be vilified by player safety — ignoring the action that actually caused an injury, is ridiculous.

But Spector’s column is another level of inanity. Maybe he was pressed for time and didn’t actually write it. Maybe it was AI — Artificial Ignorance.
