  1. I have to imagine losing Boeser so unpredictably played a big role in why they lost game 7.

It’s not the fact they lost him it’s how they lost him in my opinion.

The power play probably lost them the series. They had the man advantage in parts of the game and they were utterly putrid during it. Like they could hardly enter the zone when the game was in its closing stages 6 on 5, and the 4 min power play they had barely generated anything.

And of course, Edmonton’s power play was insane and always is insane.

So what lost them the series? I’d say failing to capitalize on their opportunities on the man advantage and not generating enough shots on a pretty shaky Skinner.

  2. the canucks didn't generate shots the entire playoffs. you can't score goals if you don't shoot the puck

  3. Demko is a bigger loss than most realize. The Canucks play a more aggressive attacking style when Demko is in net (2-1-2). This is how the generate offense is by heavy and aggressive forecheck during the regular season. There is a higher risk of a rush chance going back the other way, and they have more confidence playing this style with Demko in net knowing he could make the save to bail them out. When DeSmith/Silovs is in net, the Canucks play the conservative style (1-2-2) which saw their offense drop off in production.

The reason why a lot of Canucks wins were comebacks in the playoffs is they play a conservative style (1-2-2) when the score is tied or they have a lead. Once they trail and getting late in the game, they go back to the aggressive (2-1-2) style. If the Canucks had a healthy Demko for this playoff run, the story could really be different.

However, I don't see them getting by Dallas even with a healthy roster because the lack of quality top 6 winger will always be their downfall.

  4. The level of intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge in this community is contagious. It's invigorating to be a part of.🐱

  5. Demko can't score goals lol. The canucks offense or lack of it was evident. 17 shots in game 7? Demko can't solve that. Silovs was fine.

  6. What went wrong for the Canucks? Their puck luck ended after game 5. Straight up Edmonton was better at every position except goal for the entirety of the series except for game 5. You expect to win a series where you are the best team in one game out of 7. The only reason this goes 7 is because the Oilers got bad goalie performance in the first 3 games.

  7. Canucks had a higher xGF in game 7 believe it or not. Demko would've saved half the goals that were scored by the Oilers in the series.

  8. boeser was a big loss. pettersson is a big loss also. don't know who that is wearing his jersey. some deadwood needs to go. mikheyev will never score again. the oilers felt desperation in the last 2 games that the canucks couldn't manufacture for themselves. this team won't have the same success next year.

  9. Speaking as a Canucks fan, nothing really went wrong, except for the Demko and Boeser injuries. The Canucks overachieved in the first half, came back down to earth and while they didn’t play their best games in 6 and 7, they had some luck go their way. As well as Tocchet did, maybe they need to adjust to a slightly more offensive style while maintaining that defensive structure. But we’ll see. This is the first time in 10 years that they’ve been any good, so expectations should have been a bit more tempered. They were good not great and things had to go their way for them to keep winning. It’s a close league. Canucks fans who say they should have beaten the Oilers easily are homers. I’ve been a fan since 1990 and I knew to get this far, they’d have to have some luck. That luck ran out when they played a team with 2 of the best players in the world that finally learned to play some defense and they got a couple of key injuries. I’ve seen Pettersson excel in the playoffs so I’ll hold my judgment for next season. Queue the racist comments about “lazy” Swedes. I’m sure Peter Forsberg has something to say about that, as well as a couple of guys named Ulf.

  10. Coaching lost for the Canucks. Period. Zero strategy changes. Literally. Edm figurednout Van and predicted nearly every single at before it even happened. Forced plays by the canucks × 1 million. Ridiculous

  11. Missing Boeser was a huge part.

Lindholm did great. His positioning was great in the playoffs and he made a number of really impactful shots, goals, and assists. Decent on forecheck too.

Petterson was screwed by having nothing on his line. It was him vs the world.

Series would have been 4-1 or 4-2 if Ian Cole didn't get as much ice time, and if Juulsen wasn't given the chance to throw for a hit.

And as others said, Demko in net means the Canucks play more aggressively + save more of those goals that Silovs missed but were technically saveable.

Also Big Hog is looking great, and if he can get some more consistency, he'll help these lines a fair bit.

  12. Face it. When the team with the worst percentage of shots on net for every try taken plays the team with the best record for shots on net for every try taken, it's almost impossible for the worse team to win. In the end it was all the shots the Canucks took that went wide of the mark that sunk them. They had almost as many tries as the Oilers, and they did not show any quit. The Oilers are just better defensively than most people give them credit for.

The Canucks work ethic was definitely there, but the skill level is not.

  13. What went wrong? No Demko and no Boeser for game 7, might have lost game 7 anyways with Boeser, but we would have won the series with Demko, but he's injured and that's the game so oh well. Also Canucks did not play good all playoffs, so there's another huge reason, not once did they look like the team in the first half of the season, yet they still brought it to round 2 game 7 with Edmonton winning the series by the smallest of margins possible, game 6 aside. Next year ya just need to the team to realize what playoff hockey is like.

  14. I love how the canucks fan say oilers are a one player team but now they all complain cause their one player didn’t play game 7. This coming from a neutral fan of both teams

  15. Boeser missing a game is more than offset by Henrique missing almost the entire series. The big deal was no Demko for sure even tho Silovs played very well.

  16. With that amount of shots the Canucks basically relied on Edmontons Goaltending being as bad as it was in the first 3 games.
Except for game 5 which was very good they havent won a game this series in which SP was above 80%.
And you simply cant rely on that. They need to create more offence

  17. not enough can't be said about Edmonton's goaltending and how atrocious it really is as in that game 7 Skinner faced 5 shots and let in 2 goals on those 5 shots

  18. What went wrong? Demko not being there. Look at how this series was played. First 5 games (Van won 3) were all 1 goal games. Demko being there swings one of those losses. He's an elite goalie and Vezina finalist this year. Oilers were done in 5 had Demko been healthy.

  19. Silov is going to be an amazing goalie. Hopefully he can learn from Demko and become a starter at some point.

  20. Just came here to read the comments.

My takeaway is, Vancouver played a heck of a series but they didn’t adjust and relied on their formula during the regular season. GSAA and unreal shooting. I hate it when markets make excuses for their team. The oilers beat them and if this or if that or if another thing happened. It doesn’t matter. Ultimately the better team won this year but I expect Vancouver to come back stronger next year.

  21. Canucks had the worst power play in the playoffs, it’s the reason why they lost the series, if they get 5 pp goals? Canucks win the series, they gotta switch something up with it, the 2nd unit gets 30 seconds max on the power play.

  22. Not enough talk about the biggest fraud in the league.. Quinn hughes. Coming off a Norris caliber season and he was an absolute ghost all series. Complete black hole on defense too, not sure how people can defend this guy anymore. Bouchard was 10 light years better than Hughes.
