The Epidemic Of NHL Coaches Being Fired
[Music] if you can’t beat him fire them that’s the Mantra of the modern-day NHL team and my oh my have there been a lot of firings since the start of last season 18 bench bosses have been well as the press releases would put it relieved of their coaching duties but what those releases actually mean is you’re fired John Hines Peter la Dallas eagans Daryl Sutter jar Gan Brad lson Mike Babcock Jay Woodcraft Dean Evon Craig Gru DJ Smith Lane Lambert topic CL lendy Ro Don Grado David Quinn Dave haxall and finally Sheldon ke they took our jobs yeah they took our job did while it’s crazy how many have been canned in such a short period of time it’s even more absurd when considered Kee haxall Ruff Mullen they all had contract extensions that hadn’t even started yet looking at current coaches think about how someone like Rick T who’s been around for just over a year and is over halfway to the average lifespan of an NHL bench boss of 1.9 years the MLB NFL NBA meanwhile all hovering between 3 and 1/2 and 4 years oh but Hang on we’re not done with graphs let’s dive into this so John Cooper is the most tenured coach and the only coach to be with this team for over 10 years and then at the complete opposite end of the spectrum over 80% of current coaches have been with their teams for less than 2 years the NBA and MLB hover around 45% while the NFL sits at 37 1.2% whoop what does it all mean Basel ah great question so in the world of the flat cap which we’ve had since Co organizations have been short on ways to shake up a team not a lot of player movement so if a team doesn’t reach expectations the coach is the easiest casualty Pete dor who holds to whopping 1.91 years of tenure in Big D contextualize the phenomenal on recently like this we coach in an age where everyone talks about the modern athlete building relationships in order to coach them and how do you do that with that kind of turnover it’s like going on a dates and getting married and divorced before the appetizers show up well it doesn’t seem like any other coach that risk of divorce this season we can’t say that for certain and with saying that the question at the tip of every hockey Fan’s tongue is who’s next
Sportsnet’s Kevin Michie dives into the statistically disproportionate rate at which NHL coaches are being fired vs. their counterparts in the other major North American sports. Why are we seeing so much turnover behind NHL benches?

That’s a lot of coaches
Martin St. Louis is the 6th longest tenured coach? He's been in the role for, 25 MONTHS? Good lord……
Everytime I see a Coach hired for 3 to 5 years I always think "Yeah right" because they are just tossed away like that KFC left overs you got last night and forgot about on the counter until you got home from work at 5pm.
In Rod we trust
The NHL should be praised for its dedication to recycling.
Thanks for the chuckle. I appreciate your humour.
Coaches and general managers are hired to be fired. It is eventually going to happen to every person in these positions.
Confirms how much of a nimrod Staios is to go with Green so quickly? I highly doubt all of them would've said no since they're looking for something to fill their plate anyways. Claude Julien was striaght up asking for the job and was passed on.
Jay Woodcroft back in SJ please
as glad as i am about his success as a gm, I hope Barry trotz returns to coaching eventually so he can try and chase another cup and so he can get his 1,000th win!
NHL Warming, recycling is the norm.
ATTENTION UNEMPLOYED COACHES: You want job security? Contact True North for a job as coach of the Winnipeg Jets. They've only fired 1 coach since 2011 because Ownership and GM make it more of a boys club than about success and accountability. Maurice quit mid-season 2-1/2 years ago, and Bowness just "retired." Now boys club owner Chipman and Chevy will likely spoonfeed the main bench boss job to their assistant coach Scott Arniel instead of being aggressive and getting a more experienced coach with some playoff success. 🤦🏼♂️
I know that with the Senators head coaching changes have happened often. They have had 14 head coaches in their 32-year history. 2 of those coaches were fired & returned on other dates to coach that franchise again.
Solid content
Good news for fired coaches is that there are many other job openings in the league.
