Did the Bruins disappoint this season? | Pucks with Haggs

welcome to another edition of the pucks with hags podcast powered by prize pix the exclusive daily fantasy partner of the clns media Network I believe this is the 91st episode of the pucks with hags podcast it’s going to be a pucks with hags mailbag Edition where I get your questions uh via Facebook via Twitter uh via email wherever you want to send them to me best ones are going to make deal we’re going to answer as many questions as we can and uh try to get to the bottom of what happened with the Boston Bruins and I think we should reset maybe just by setting the scene as to you know how the season ended in my thoughts um obviously a tough loss in game six uh losing in the in the final couple of minutes of the third period when everybody thought it might be headed to overtime uh that’s always a tough way to lose it was very reminiscent of game seven the year before uh where you know they fell apart and the Bruins in the last uh you know minute or two of the game um so that’s always a tough way to go out that being said different situation this year I think getting to the second round of the playoffs getting that game seven win against the Maple Leafs uh pushing Florida to six games when it could have the SE series could have ended earlier than that I think those were all actually good encouraging things for this Boston Bruins team I am not going to be um as down on this team as some might be um after building up these expect expectations that weren’t ever really there I always thought this was a wildcard team a flawed team a team that those flaws were going to come out in the playoffs and I think that’s what happened um they were 12th out of 16 teams in the playoffs in terms of goal scoring 2.3 eight goals per game um they basically couldn’t score more than two goals a game uh their power play died against the Florida Panthers um the centers were having a tough time with Puck possession um with winning faceoffs the things you thought um might happen if there was no tce berson and no David crae and uh you were trying to place replace them with pav zaka and um Charlie Coyle I think those things kind of all that stuff came to the to the four you know Rose to the sort of top and and as it is in the playoffs when you play really good teams um that can expose your flaws and exploit them I think that’s what we saw um definitely at points in the Toronto series and for sure against the Florida team team that just kept them uh hemmed In Their Own Zone was they were having a hard time breaking out against them they just kept pounding them uh with a physical for check that uh paid dividends and wore the Bruins down as a series was going on but also just kept them out of the offensive zone uh they just didn’t have Puck possession enough in the ozone and you know consequently they didn’t have enough goals um so uh end of the day I think this Bruins team maximized their potential I think they got valuable playoff experience uh for a lot of their young players and uh valuable like leadership experience and playing in different role experience uh for a lot of their veteran guys as well uh that had to step up and and you know play more minutes play bigger roles be a little bit more of a leader all that stuff this year um I think it was it was a trial for all of them and I think it was a challenge for all of them from the captain Brad Martian and his first year as Captain to Charlie McAvoy and David posnik taking on bigger leadership roles to you know Charlie Coy and zaka taking on bigger responsibilities to um you know Brandon Carlo being a very uh underrated leader and you know one of the the consciences of and personalities of this team that I think he’s an important part of Jeremy Swan obviously a guy that really stepped up into a different level um and all you had to do is hear uh the TD Garden fans the Bruins fans during the handshake line uh the the ceremonial handshake line after the series was over uh the the Panthers and Bruins are shaking hands uh with the playoff series done and the the TD Garden crowd just broke into a spontaneous swayman swayman chant which told you everything you needed to know about like how his profile Rose in these playoffs where the level of importance for him is on this team now where the pecking order is now he’s one of the most important players on that team uh he’s going to get a Mega contract extension in the summertime I have zero doubt about it after that playf playoff run I think he earned it with the way he seized and took control of that um starting playoff spot and and the way he you know played 933 save percentage led the entire playoff field um you know was really the only reason they got to game six or the biggest reason they got to game six of the six of the second round was San being just spectacular in the pipes you know it was too bad obviously that the season ended on a rebound of an Anton londell shot that wasn’t great and kicked out to Gus forsling for the gamewinner but whatever I don’t think anybody really cares uh how that goal is scored you’re not going to blame swm for anything because he was the biggest reason he was there uh if anybody’s deserving of a mulligan it’s that guy after a way the way he played throughout the playoffs and the way he’s really risen uh or pushed up his profile uh around the NHL you know I think people are going to view him as a number one he should get paid like a number one now um and it’s all because like it’s very rare and it’s hard to find guys that perform like that in the playoffs with the pressure on and he absolutely did it um but I mean that’s that’s about it as far as the season goes um I just think they lost to a better team in the Florida Panthers I don’t think you can be it’s kind of how I felt in 2013 when the Bruins lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Final how could you be mad at that Bruins team uh for losing to a dynastic better team in the Blackhawks they just lost to a better team and I always felt that way you know you can’t be that upset about it happening when when something like that happens you tip your cap and you move on and I I think the Bruins felt that and knew that by the time the series was over that the Florida Panthers uh might be built to win a Cup this year and certainly are built to get all the way to the end uh if they stay healthy and the Bruins just aren’t there yet and um I think they accomplished a lot this year they deserve a ton of credit the regular season was great uh winning a Playoff round postr neck being the game seven hero in overtime having his playoff moment even if the playoffs in general were a little disappointing for him uh I think was huge and and is something he can build on moving forward um but just in general I think you know I’ve said this a lot this year it’s kind of a transition year for the Bruins kind of a bridge year if you want to use that term there’s a lot of different terms you could use but whatever you want to use uh they’re in the midst of going from one thing to another and uh this was that transition year so like I think you got to temper the expectations a little bit um and I think they met them and exceeded them frankly um doing what they did so um as disappointing as last year wasn’t rightfully so for a stack team to go out in the first round last year was the one uh fans should be really disappointed and down about and pissed off or whatever whatever emotion they want to have uh but this year I think you you’d say good job uh nice building year um you did some good things and now you get you know 20 plus million dollars in salary caps space that you can go play with especially if you can trade Lena elmark so um with that being said let’s thank our sponsors I really got into it before we even got to our sponsors uh prize picks is the largest daily fantasy sports platform in North America and the easiest and most exciting way 1972-1974 on Twitter do you think the Bruins will be able to find the cap space to sign a number one Center a top four Dem man another legitimate scoring Winger while getting Swan and debrusk resigned with new contracts if not what do you believe should be the top priorities for the roster well let me first state by saying this you’re not going to get all of that and resigned to brusk and sing that’s just not going to happen debrusk had a good playoff he led you in postseason points um you know he’s got past good offensive Seasons under his belt he’s a former first round pick I think he’s gonna get paid somewhere I just don’t think I still don’t think it’s going to be here I don’t think he’s coming back to Boston I think he’s going to go for money somewhere else I don’t think the Bruins are going to be able to pay him the money that wants so I think that one he’s not coming back and look I’m of the opinion that as good as he is um and he was good in the playoffs and he played with he’s had a broken hand towards the end of the regular season uh impressive tough um that he would do that um shows up in the postseason like had a good playoff um when he’s hot he can really like carry you offensively and he can do some things like last year he was Dynamite obviously but he was playing playing with berson and uh Maran and you got to kind of uh put that in perspective uh that he was in that spot but he did really well playing with them but do you are you willing to go four or five years on a big money deal with Jake de bras probably what he’s going to get on the open market uh for a player player that’s inconsistent like he is a player that you know so maybe sometimes you want to keep the carrot sort of right in front of him as for motivational uh speaking and motivational purposes um you’re not going to be able to do that as much if you have signed him to a four to fiveyear Security deal uh with big money do you are you willing to take that risk that he’s GNA bring it and give you what you need every single night when he’s got that kind of security I think the Bruins have learned at this point that that might not be a good bet um and that better off having him signed somewhere else and look he’s Jake de bruss is a good guy um I know he’s tight with postr neck and that that means something you know there’s going to be pull there to resign him because he’s a p from next boys um but I just think it would not be wise to spend that kind of term that kind of money investment sync that kind of money in in a a summer when you’re going to have some money to spend to sync a portion of it on a player that you know what he is and you know probably he’s not going to live up to whatever you’re paying him um from a consistency standpoint I think you’re better off moving on um and look it’s tough to put the puck in the net that’s the hardest skill to have it’s going to be hard to replace that maybe what you’re bringing in isn’t even going to be as good as that you know that’s the other part of this is if you let him walk what are you getting instead you know is it anything better is it worse is it an upgrade like you’re always looking to upgrade um so that’s a tough part of the equation as well but I I think they’ll they’ll think long and hard about the depress one Swan’s a no-brainer I think seven years seven million a year something like that um it’s going to get done and you know he’s not going to get huge huge money because he still has to he has some things to prove in the regular season as far as games played as far as being a number one that can really you know play a 55 to 60 game uh workload that kind of thing in addition to the playoffs but you he’ll get paid enough for sure uh as a number one goalie um as far as what I think uh should be the top priority on the roster I think number one Center uh you know I don’t know if it’s Elias lindol I don’t know if you go out and you trade for somebody um and you move uh you have to move some assets or prospects to make it happen um a lot of the good number one centers good Frontline centers have been moved that were kind of thought of as potential uh trade targets or guys that were going to get traded so I don’t know what’s actually going to be out there um available to them um I think that’s going to have to play itself out uh prior to July 1st uh and after July 1 maybe but um Lind Holmes a guy I would think about just because he’s so good two-way um you know he could handle being a Frontline Center he’s the kind of guy that could maybe counteract some of the things that barov was doing in that series to be so dominant because I think it really showed in that second round series that just barkov’s a stud he’s so good as a two-way Center and a Frontline Center and uh the Bruins didn’t really have somebody that could counteract that guy um and you need somebody that can kind of Fight Fire with Fire uh with a player like that so I think that’s the most important one uh legit scoring Winger sure uh they definitely need another one of those um you know too many nights where you’ve got Morgan geeky Danton Heinen other guys playing Wing in the top six that are you know Trent Frederick jvr like whoever that aren’t I can’t either can’t do it now could never do it or just aren’t top six Wingers that are going to put the puck in the net so they need to find another one um and they may need to find two if Jake de brusk moves on so you know that’s part of it as well um top four dman this one I don’t know um if you believe Mason lorai is top four quality eventually like at some point this next coming season he’s going to be a top four defenseman uh you have Brandon Carlo you have Charlie McAvoy you have hampus Lindholm I don’t know that you need to get another top four defenseman I think you maybe need to focus on developing some young defenseman and you know uh growing some players the the next Mason lorai that’s going to be able to help you with the NHL level uh but lorai I saw enough out of him to think he’s turning into something like next year like he’s ready to come out of the oven he’s ready he’s done um you know he’s a fully cooked meal um and he’s ready to be top four move the puck power play um you know be a dynamic Puck mover an offensive defenseman yes he’s still got lessons to learn defensively but I liked his competitiveness in the playoffs he was taking some penalties but he was doing that because he wasn’t giving up on plays and he was fighting um and he was trying to play his position and play hard hockey hard playoff hockey so I think it was a good experience for him and I think he’ll continue to to do that and get better at it um so the top four defenseman I’m not sure uh I also liked that hampus Lindholm had a big game seven in the first round against Toronto I think that got the playoff monkeyy off his back to a degree where he finally had a really good performance where he was impactful for the Bruins uh in in an important playoff game and and I thought he played better after that I thought he still struggled against Florida at times which is going to happen but I also thought lindol and makoy when they were together were very good and uh that’s maybe something we’ll start seeing more a as we probably should all right um from NH David hagag question if someone offers swmming eight and a half a year doubtful but possible does Sweeney take the two firsts one second and one third round pick this is an offer sheet obviously that they’re talking about same with the lower amount 6.5 million more likely does Sweeney take the one first two second and third round picks thanks no no no no no no no no do you think there is any way Don Sweeney who drafted and developed Jeremy Swan plucked him out of the University of Maine um and set him on the path to being the NHL star that he is now who just was lights out in the playoffs 933 save percentage um you know did everything you would want out of a number one goalie in the in the making that’s in his like mid 20s and is going to be in the prime of his career for the next 10 years you could be getting Stellar number one goal tending and a big game goalie in the playoffs for the next decade you’re gonna let that go uh because somebody is making an offer sheet and is trying to take him from you no freaking way if somebody makes an offer sheet to Jeremy Swan the Bruins are going to match it and then they should Target that team and go after one of their restricted free agents and try to bring them to Boston and Fight Fire with Fire and and screw with that team and try to mess them up uh I don’t think there’s any way a I don’t think anybody wants is going to pay sing that much and put an offer sheet out there for him I think that it’s pretty well known that he wants to stay in Boston so I don’t think I think people know that they’d be getting used uh if they uh went the offer sheet route and he’d have to sign it too I don’t I don’t think Jeremy Swan would even do that to be honest with you um but uh for theoretical purposes if Jeremy swan were to sign an offer sheet uh whether it was the 6.5 or 8.5 uh per year with another team the Bruins would match it and they would keep them and that would be it but I like I said I don’t think this is going to be a protracted negotiation he’s certainly I don’t think going to go to arbitration this time around after the bitter uh experience of last uh offseason last summer with San and the Bruins I think they’re going to pay him seven years like sevenish million a year somewhere in there and it’s going to be a fair deal uh for him as a number one goalie for the you know basically the next decade and I think the next part of that is uh the next Domino to fall is is elar and and trying to trade him and uh clear that $5 million in cap space and you know find one of the 15 NHL teams uh that he will agree uh to a trade to or um 17 teams excuse me 16 actually that he will agree to a trade to because he’s got a 15 uh Team protected list now if alark is smart and his agent is smart and I’m sure they are the no trade teams I would ECT are going to be teams that don’t need goal tending that have the best goalies in the league um and will that will you know in essence make it more him more untradeable and more difficult to move because I don’t think El Mark wants to go anywhere didn’t want to go to La uh doesn’t want to obviously go to Buffalo I don’t think he wants to go to a place like Edmonton either um so I think he’s gonna have uh on his on his no trade list the teams he can’t get traded to um it will be teams that that he doesn’t want to go to and the teams that he can get traded to it will be teams that don’t need uh goal tending you know if you leave like teams like the New York Rangers and the Islanders on your you know you can trade me there list um it’s fine because you’re never going to get traded there because they have goalies they don’t need you um that would be the smart way to do it that would be the way to maneuver it so you would never get traded anywhere uh we’ll see if that happens all right um Jim Clutier on Facebook NHL hiding behind rules covering a year of terrible officiating the key to officiating establishing a level threshold of calls for a game that stays consistent from puck drop to potential overtime Never Should calls vary dependent on time team playoffs or regular season I agree with this but like let’s face it they call it different in the playoffs than they do the regular season they call it different sometimes later in a game than they do earlier in the game they just do uh an interference in Period one I.E is still the same level of contact as overtime the fact that l was called for an interference off the puck with minimal contact and a questionable embellishment establish the level for the call in the game to hide behind rules and kick it back to refs who don’t follow their own established level for the same penalty not only negates the reason and validity of a review process it shows the weakness and lack of discipline on NHL rules committee and process put in place if this was Premier League soccer they would have removed refs from further playoff games game responsibilities thus establishing referee discipline and at least a facade of of accountability Jim clud I love it buddy you sound like somebody that’s been on a rules committee or two in your life it’s true you know like there are some uh weak calls uh that you see uh there’s a lot of inconsistency you see uh in the playoffs uh there’s certainly uh times where you know you see uh something getting established in the first period and immediately it goes away from that and it’s something different later on depending on where you are who the home team is if they’re getting pressured by the fans the home fans um all that stuff so like they’re human it happens um but in general like the obvious one is the uh the replay um a goalie interference right that’s the one I think um everybody’s going to be talking about for a long time you know Sam Bennett ducking decking Charlie Coyle uh and then scoring and basically threw coil on top of San and then scored the goal and you know the the the thought from the NHL was that Swan was not going to be able to recover and make the save so it’s you know it doesn’t matter if somebody landed on top of him but I don’t know how you can make that determination I don’t understand how you can figure that out or reason that out or say that that’s so um in such a theoretical way like how do you know that you don’t know that there’s no way um and you know the series supervisor ER K Whitmore was is a goalie guy so like you know if he was in any way part of the decision-making there it’s interesting that that’s the way it went down um you know the other part of that is Don Sweeney mentioned after it happened that they want uh the NHL officials the K whitmor of the world um to speak and uh to answer questions about this and to you know if if Gary bman is having um meetings before the year and it’s telling all the coach and all the GMS that he doesn’t want to hear uh belly aing and bitching about officials or he’s going to fine everybody and he’s going to come down on them hard well you can’t do that on one hand and then the other hand have zero accountability for anybody in your league when it comes to uh calls when it comes to um rulings when it comes to reviews when it comes to all this stuff like you got to have more of an explanation if you’re not going to allow the GMS and the coaches to demand those explanations and critique them and have opinions on them like this is something we need this is something the league should have this is something that gets things talked about you know and I understand makes the NHL a little uncomfortable but like a healthy debate about this is not the worst thing in the world and I certainly think um there needs to be at least be series supervisors or supervisors officials willing to comment to a pool reporter answer two or three questions nothing extensive nothing huge just what the just explain what the NHL’s thinking was and saying this wasn’t interference because it looked to anybody any kind of layman anybody that you know is a casual even fan of hockey it looked like goal interference where somebody was throwing somebody on top of the goalie and then scoring a goal I mean I looked as cut and dry as interference could be and I’ve seen plenty of plays where that was called goalie interference and the goal is overturned so uh I agree with you Jim Clutier I think there needs to be some certainly a few areas where uh the officials could do better and where the NHL could do better um I I loved your uh your message though well well taken all right uh this is from Matt France love your work Joe would you mind setting settling a debate did the n gamewinner in game five of the Toronto series go off grizzli skate to the front of the net who is primarily responsible for that goal being scored well it I think it may have gone off es skate maybe it went off the post I think that actually is not doesn’t matter that much to be honest with you whether it went off the post or it went off his skate whatever it went off of and it popped to the front of the net there’s two um there’s three people to blame here or there’s three people culpable um there is Charlie McAvoy and Charlie Coyle that were watching the front of the net and not covering the front of the net and allowed n to get in there and score and there is John Darez um bulling Matt grizzli to the net just lowering his shoulder and and you know driving the net and you know taking advantage of his size and strength he recognized that grizzli was the defender and said I can take this guy and he bulled him to the the net and the puck got to the front of the net now the whole the whole reason that play happened is because John Darez saw that it was Matt grizzli and knew that he could take him and take him to the to the rack take him to the cage I think that’s the the player that’s most responsible because uh grizz’s job there is to push him to the outside make sure that puck doesn’t get to the front get him behind the net and make sure that the net the puck doesn’t get uh to the goalie he didn’t do that he got uh beat with a couple quick steps he got beat in the size and strength Department he just got beat and the puck managed to find its way to the front of the net where matth un hustled and and popped in the goal um so I think there’s blame to go around to all three um but I think the biggest one to blame is Matt grizzli there’s been too many times where he’s been the one that’s been picked on he’s the one that um was a liability uh when they scored a goal uh just because he’s you know he’s smaller and he uh players on the other team will take advantage of him when he’s out there in situations like that especially um like in an overtime situation so you know I it’s I think it stinks I think it’s unfortunate that that might end up being the last play uh of grizz’s career in a Bruins uniform um you know going out that way I think that’s if that’s the way it goes and that’s you know how his last moments are remembered that’s unfortunate um but I don’t he’s one of those players I don’t think is going to be back next year he’s a free agent now entering free agency um probably best to go somewhere else um sign for a few years be a good Puck moving defenseman maybe he’ll like you know not being not playing in his backyard anymore maybe the grass will be greener somewhere else uh maybe he’ll get more of an opportunity somewhere else but um I just think in the playoffs you need bigger stronger defensemen across the board you know they need to be big strong not weak link types defensively not somebody that can be exploited defensively because I know grizzli was good with the stick and he was good at uh killing plays before they got into the zone and he’s a smart Defender and good technically and using his stick all that stuff but the bottom line is uh when push comes to shove they were any team is able to if they want to exploit a matchup where they want to get somebody big and strong that can you know throw grizzli around by the net they they’re going to get it sometimes if that’s what they’re looking for and I think you just can’t have that um on your defensive front in the postseason it becomes something that can get picked on um and you need to have no weaknesses like that um so bottom line I would say that uh grizzli was primarily responsible people are going to say makavo um that he should have cleared the puck and he was Puck watching and certainly coil too because he’s a center and that’s his responsibility but I I’m gonna say grizzling um all right this is Julian back at 75 Grizz Gone shaty Gone forbo Gone mavo l R Carlo lindol Peak those guys aren’t going anywhere we need Manson um they need somebody like that you know they need somebody that is not going to be um not going to be tremendously expensive to get um that is not going to need to be a top pair guy um but brings snarl brings physicality brings somebody that’s a little bit of a big brother sort of presence um that will not be afraid uh to pick uh protect his teammates um to to you know set the tone physically they need somebody like that on the back end they really do uh they need that element you know Derek forbort was a good penalty killer good player big strong all that stuff but he wasn’t that type of guy um that wasn’t his role that’s not what he did um and I don’t think he was comfortable doing it I don’t think that was his Forte they need to find somebody that’s a mean son of a [ __ ] you know and I don’t think that was Derek Fort um you know makavo is a little bit of that but you obvious don’t want him doing too much of that stuff because it wipes him out and tires him out from you know being effective at some of the other things that he needs to do as well um so I like Manson some type like that they need to bring in and you know to the point earlier when you’re talking about a top four d man if it’s somebody like that I don’t think you’re going to be spending a ton um to get them you know I don’t think the salary cap uh um needs are going to be out of this world astronomical so I think that’s that’s a feasible solution somebody like that somebody like Jacob Middleton some some kind of player like that they definitely need it um this is an interesting one I like this one J baral the 11 how many first line level players do the Bruins have how many second line level players do the Bruins have okay let’s do this exercise first line level players Brad Martian yes David Pock yes um second line level players Pavel zaka yeah I would say so like second line Center maybe a wing um yeah I would put him there um but like a lot of the other guys Trent Frederick no um Morgan geeki I think he’s best in the third line Charlie Coyle’s probably best on the third line jvr definitely not um Danton Heinen no I think he’s a third fourth line player uh Jake debrusk I think on a great on a really deep great team he would be a third line Winger that can put the puck in the net um you know do I automatic maybe second line certainly I don’t think he’s a first line player maybe you’d put him in second line with with zaka um but I think you know when you break it down there’s probably like two first line players and two second line players if you count debras as a second line player among the forwards that the Bruins have right now um and I think zaka and debrus are kind of debatable I think you know one of them you could say definitely yes the other one maybe not uh but beyond that I think it’s like a lot of third and fourth line kind of players um definitely third liners uh that they have and like that’s where they fit best you know Trent Frederick would be uh much more effective if he was in a third line role always in a third line role sort of like you know was allowed to sort of take over that line and be the guy that helps drive that um same with Morgan geeky I I think he’s outstanding in that role like you you put geeky and Frederick with somebody else and it’s just this like crash bang third line that’s physical that hangs on to pucks that pounds you in the offensive zone like you’re talking about something there once you have that so maybe brazo with them I mean that’s a little slow but like those guys could be formidable um but yeah I I think it’s a great question I I think they’re short uh one top line with first line forward and one second line forward for sure uh among the forwards that they have now so if if if I were them I think that’s the biggest I think I would go for at least two forwards I’d go for a number one Center and a top six Winger that can score goals as the top two items on my shopping list in NHL free agency whether it’s trade whether it’s a free agent signing um they have 20 plus million dollars to to spend they’ve got 20 million plus in salary caps space they’ve got closer to 25 million uh if they trade lenus allmark so I right now I think you’ve got to spend at least 15 million of that on a Topline Center and a top six Winger that can score goals and you could probably get that for 15 million bucks of salary caps based per season um so you go out and do that and and maybe you find somebody that’s a little more legit as a top six Winger Than Jake debrusk more consistent um you know bigger stronger somebody maybe you believe is going to be able to stay consistent and stay like keep the engine uh running High uh throughout the season but those would be in the pucks with hags podcast those would be hags two biggest shopping list items uh for the Boston Bruins would be a number one Center in a top six Winger that can a sniper that can put the [ __ ] in the net all right uh this is from Oregon 77 Hey Joe ever since he stopped fighting and stopped doing the things he was brought in here to do Trent Frederick became a non-factor very Expendable I don’t I’m not going to call him Expendable um I still think he’s a very effective player I would like it if he played you know if he dropped the gloves a little more if he hit more um I don’t know if that’s his Forte really the body checking and the hitting because I just don’t know if he’s fast enough to really get in there um as much as he needs to um but I I I I agree with you that uh you know he’s one of those uh you know Crusher Usher uh uh Don Cherry uh when a Crusher thinks he’s a rusher soon he becomes an usher or what whatever he said Don Cherry I think you know TR Frederick is one of those guys he’s a Crusher he’s not a rusher um and he’s got a little bit of skill but he’s got like third line skill he doesn’t have Elite top six skill he doesn’t have posternack skill doesn’t have debrusk skill so I think he needs to have that element of physicality of of nastiness of of being willing to fight uh and he needs to do it a little more regularly and be that presence uh for the Bruins I I don’t think there’s any doubt about it do I think he’s Expendable no I don’t think he’s a player that’s going to move on you don’t give up on big strong physical power forward types that have the skill level at least to be a first round pick even if he’s more of a third line type um and he’s a good like locker room guy I think he’s very popular in there I don’t I don’t see any benefit to moving him um because I think he’s he’s one of those guys uh that’s going to help you and is more Boston Bruins player than not like I think I picture it this way if you trade Trent Frederick somewhere else I could picture him turning into the player you always wanted him to be here if you move him and you’d always have that regret uh if it happened so I wouldn’t move him I don’t think he’s Expendable um all right that is it for this week’s uh pucks with hags mailbag thanks for listening thanks to 1. Didn't expect a cup….If we could score goals we might have gone a little deeper.
Saw some good young talent comin' up.
And we did beat the Leafs so….Not a complete waste eh? 🤣🤣
    Go BRUINS.

  2. The Bruins had a great season. Everybody thought the Bruins would struggle to be a playoff team. Next season will be an improvement for the Bruins with the added Cap Space.

  3. C'mon Haggs, you can't "tip your cap" to an organization that suppressed a sexual abuse incident on the eve of the Blackhawks first Cup win. That's pure evil on Chicago's part

  4. Not a disappointment at all! How many teams would love to have the season the Bruins had and right up against the cap! I thought they might be at best a wild card team. They almost won the division……they knocked off the Leafs – yet again – and if they had a true #1 center they beat Florida. Best goalie tandem in the league, Swayman will be a stud, plenty of good young talent we saw on D and forward. Now Sweeney needs to fix the center miss and additional scoring and they need another solid stay at home D man. Hope they can do it through trades and FA’s in the off season.

  5. It's like an annual thing for the B's to be projected as a "bubble team" by alleged on- air-head experts. I read one projection that said this was the year the Sabres and Wings overtake the Bruins. Yeah, okay. With little cap space, the B's were rounded out by bargain bin signings. We knew goaltending would be the backbone of the club and it was too the tune of 47-20-15. How's that for a bubble team? Considering they lost 37 and 46, they did well. The end sucked but not the whole season. Sway emerged as a stud goaltender who once he signs his new deal with be the top dog in net for several years to come. Lohrei took massive steps forward in the playoffs. This kid is poised, confident with hopefully the best of him yet to come. Freddy increased his goal output. Wotherspoon wasn't too bad. They'll be back.

  6. Not even close. We actually played some youth, may have found a diamond in the rough in Brazzeau and not only made the playoffs but beat the leafs to crush that organization. We need more top end talent in the forward group and we will be good

  7. Good season better than expected….maybe. But all the problems they had in the regular season bit them in the playoffs. They have some good young players and Swayman kept them alive for longer. Need more depth and physicality. More consistency and no more TOO MANY MEN ON THE ICE!!!!!! 🐻

  8. Keep DeBrusk but re-evaluate our perception and expectation of him. Is he a top-6 pure-scoring 'snipah'? Possibly not with his inconsistency. Is he a solid top-6 two-way player that scan score 20+ goals? Yes he is and any team, including the Bruins, need guys like him. Marchand and Coyle are our other two guys and Marchand has one year left on his deal and maybe a year after that in the tank.
The only problem with my take is that someone else will probably offer him more and he'll take the deal. Then DeBrusk will be another "How come we can't get guys like that on our team players"

  9. Watched Lindholm for years here in Calgary… Solid #2 centre. You pay him as a #1- buyer beware.

  10. Of course Haggerty lets Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins off the hoo

ZERO surprise there, it's who he is

As for his, "give the Bruins props for this season" trope?

    Are you F.N. kidding me?

Why was this a so-called "transition year" Joe?

That's right, because Don Sweeney had 9 years to find Bergeron and Krejci replacements and he never did.

Sweeney also cocked up their salary cap so much they had to, YET AGAIN, move assets for nothing but Cap Relief from the Cap Prison he built (Taylor Hall anyone), which forced bottom 6 guys to play Top 6 roles (which burned them in the post season) AND that's not even getting into the fact that Don Sweeney has led the Boston Bruins to the NHL's worst draft capital as well as the NHL's worst farm system

Can we please stop this LIE that Don Sweeney has moved all these draft picks to win

WRONG!!! Far too many assets have gone out of the door here in Boston just to fix drafting and UFA mistakes, in other words, to fix Sweeney's MISTAKES!!!

David Backes- A 1st round pick and their highest drafted player in 2018, 2nd round Axl Andersson, moved for nothing but Salary Cap Relief

Matt Belesky- Top 4 defender and 2nd round pick Ryan Lindgren had to be included in the Rick Nash trade to get NYR to take the remainder of Belesky's terrible UFA deal

And yet another 2nd round had to pissed away in the Lindholm deal to Anaheim so they'd take the rest of John Moore's terrible UFA contract

Also had Sweeney drafted better this past year wouldn't had to be a transition year. Again, they are 32nd and dead last in the NHL in terms of prospect pools and have NO draft capital.

Also had Sweeney used the Cap Space better they wouldn't have got stuck with the overages for 37 & 46 and they wouldn't have had to try winning in the playoffs this year with two guys in Coyle and Zacha who have PROVEN in spades they aren't top 6 guys.

They can't even play Zacha at center as he can't win puck battles and he has 1 career playoff goal in nearly 30 career NHL games.

Coyle is a good, defensive 3rd line center. He has 5 goals in his last 27 playoff games and is in no shape or form a competent Top 6 player

Whose fault is all of this Joe? Who is responsible for UFA contracts, drafting and developing? It's the GM Joe!!!

The GMs results? 8 of 9 years failing to win more than 1 playoff round. ONE, 2nd round win in 9 years with Don Sweeney as GM

NHL's worst draft capital. Not drafting until the 4th round this year. Not having a 2nd round pick again until 2026. Not having a 1st round pick five of the last seven years. Not having their top 3 round draft picks again until 2026

NHL's worst farm system that is currently ranked 32nd and dead last in the NHL.

Also, name me the NHL team with the fewest games played by draft picks since 2017? Uh oh, spoiler alert, it was the Boston Bruins. Getting the picture as to why the entities responsible for grading out prospect pools have Boston's in the toilet?

Spoiler Alert, Boston's crap Farm System led by Don Sweeney has never been ranked better than 27th. Which again, would be fine, if they actually won in the playoffs

The problem? 8 of 9 years they've failed to win more than 1 playoff round. ONE, 2nd round win in 9 years. The past 5 post seasons? Two, 1st round chokes. Three, 2nd round exits

The Bruins have their Homer driven fan based fooled. They build offensive limited teams, that win a ton of regular season games with above average goaltending and system execution. T

Then they bank a ton of regular season points against the NHL's bad teams and a crap ton of OT loser points against the NHL's good teams in the regular season.

However, when the playoffs begin every season, the Bruins offensive and other limitations rise to the top and once again and they either choke or simply get beat by better teams

Proof? 8 of 9 years Sweeney's Bruins have failed to win more than 1 playoff round. Only ONCE in 9 years have the Bruins won a 2nd round series, ONCE!!!

Combine that crap playoff record with the NHL's worst draft capital and the NHL's worst farm system and it's time to let Don Sweeney off the hook Joe?🤣🤣

Okay homer. Okay. Again they over achieved with this roster this year, sure. Why did this roster kind of suck again Joe and get exposed in the playoffs? Don F.N. Sweeney Joe. Don F.N.Sweeney

    NHL's worst farm system
    NHL's worst draft capital
    No real 1c or 2c
8 of 9 years failed to win more than 1 playoff round
ONE, 2nd round series win in 9 years, ONE!!!!
    Haven't won a 2nd round series since 2019
Since 2019 (the last 5 post seasons): Two 1st round chokes, Three 2nd round exits

Playoff choking dogs with flawed teams that get exposed every post season
    NHL's worst farm system
    NHL's worst draft capital
    No real 1c or 2c

But again, none of this is Don Sweeney's fault. Just ask Joe. They over achieved and Sweeney probably deserves another GM of the Year award

    Good grief😂😂😂😂😂

  11. I like debrusk but they should have packaged him for a top 6 center. Of course he played well with Bergy/Marchy but who didn't. Letting him walk for nothing is just bad business.

  12. OMG…you almost made me spit out my coffee….spot on with Frederick and the crusher, rusher, usher assessment…says the guy who just got his Stan Jonathan Sweater….LMFAO

  13. Not a Bruins fan. The season wasn't a disappointment. Great regular season no one saw coming. Beat Leafs. Played Florida hard, even when outclassed. Fingers to be pointed at GM and above.
