Landeskog Still Plans to Play. “Plausible” Nichushkin Returns to Avalanche After Suspension.

Colorado Avalanche Captain Gabriel Landeskog and GM Chris MacFarland met the media Thursday morning to discuss a number of things involving the team, with getting the biggest concern out of the way right off the bat. Gabe Landeskog is not retiring.

His plan is to play next year. Exactly when still remains a mystery however. What also is a mystery is what the Avalanche will do with Val Nichushkin. Right now there doesn’t seem like there is much they can do, with MacFarland going as far as to say it is “plausible” that he returns to the team when his suspension is over.

A lot was covered in the 45 minute press conference and we discuss it all!

  1. I think we're well past the point with Landy when MacFarland said any setback would take him back to square one. Landy mentioned today that he hasn't had a setback minor or major in the last two months implying that he had been through some setbacks already. At this point I think its just a matter of can he get the strength, mobility, and stability in the knee to the point it needs to be to play in the NHL. That and getting his new skating style imbedded in his muscle memory so he doesn't revert and do any other harm in that way.

The more I think about the Val situation, the more I think they'll work something out with him that he goes back to the KHL for at least a season or two. Then they could suspend him and monitor his rehab progress from a distance to see how he does. Maybe after next season or the season after that if everything is going well and he wants to come back they can either bring him back to the Avs or try and trade at that point. If that doesn't work, then i think they'll have a negotiated contract settlement worked out with him that would be announced if/when he is reinstated.

  2. Cant say im really suprised by anything except Drouin. Kinda thought they could get away with a 2 year deal where they just double what he makes now to try and kick the can down the road. But i aint the GM. Plus i thought if landy was going to retire it would have been lnown before the press conference. And then no suprise with Val at all. Kinda wanna say i called it. But we'll see what happens next season. And FYI they should totally bring the foot back

  3. Val is done he won’t play another game for them with how they spoke at the press conference , you could tell they are done ,welcoming him back was just saying all the right words to safe face , the mood you could tell they will trade him is my bet .

  4. Landeskog is coming back in October 2024. He will have the same stats of Zach Parise when the 2024-25 regular season is done. Val Nickhuskin will FAIL Stage 4 so AVS Front Office will be very happy. That means Val won’t be back in the NHL. Awesome Sauce. Now to the penny pinching AVS. Yes, I agree little spending will be seen by the Front Office. Big contract is what NHL players want and not low low low contracts.

  5. Well i do hope he get his help. He does have a family to worry about as well.
I am just saddened that not only are we mourning the end of our 2024 run, but having to yet again deal with injuries.
I mean unless i missed it, no one is talking about LOC??…
    How is he doing??..
    Or…
Why is Mikko in such a funk??
Why cant Bednar BUY a Jack Adams nomination??

I love how none of these questions came up.
I dont want to speak about Nichushkin anymore. This issue is between him, his family, and his employer. Hes lost my trust. Period. But guess what, we as fans dont get to decide.. which is honestly a good thing. But i can tell you what im not going to do, spend one dollar of my hard earned coins on anything with his number.

I just for once, would like to go into the off season with some sense of comfort with my team. And right now i am far from that. Still very dedicated, but very worried and skeptical, which is never a good place for your fanbase.

  6. I hope the bring yhe Foot back and make it the primary logo on their alternates. Then they can throw their current alternates in the trash where they belong.

  7. I don't care who Howler fought in the parking lot, I want the yeti foot back and the colorado C gone.
Macfarland is the one who offered Nuke an 8-year contract with zero outs. Not smart, but he didn't have any off-ice issues before…Would love to see a Macfarland episode and grade!

  8. Glad you guys explained a lot of it because unlike Leafs media they don't give a mic to the reporters and couldn't hear a single question asked, just the replies from Gabe and Chris. Really hope Avs media does something about that soon. Or at least a mic near the reporters or something. Glad he isn't retired and yes that hat is FIRE!!! Keep up the great work guys. And no not a Leafs fan at all, just live in the same area and see it regularly.

  9. Yeah right, they want him back so he can screw up a third time! There is something really wrong with that MacFarland fellow – he will be the ruin for the Avs! The thing with Landeskog – he lives in the present but you cannot run an NHL team without planning, and so far, planning for the new season is up in the air, full of uncertainties!

  10. Guys, Landeskog has to be cagey on the return date. He's gotta be positive enough to kill the "retirement" rumors, but he also has to be "injured enough" to get LTIR'd by CMac in January/February if its in the best interests of the team. That's why he was looking at CMac during the Q&A. They are threading an LTIR needle, Las Vegas style.

  11. drouins no dummy he knos its a long shot to have the success he did anywhere else ,if he does leave hes back to square one and can only pray to find magic … which didnt work out well for most of his career so ,i wanted us to get drouin like 6 years ago , but eh better late than never i guess

  12. Replacing Nichuskin is easy. Just put Trenin in his place…same kind of work ethic same gritty game, same size, and defensive prowess…and if you look at their Junior numbers Trenin blows Nichuskin's' away–significantly better. Let's give Trenin the opportunity, eh? LOL

  13. Why would landy retire? Nhl contacts are garunteed. If he knows he'll never play again, he'll "rehab" until his contact is up, then he'll retire. Just like i, you, or anyone would do for 6mil plus a year. Hope that's not the case. He's a hell of a player
