2024 NHL Draft Trade Rumours – Habs, Leafs, Sens, Canes, Isles, Sabres, NJ

the 2024 NHL draft is just over a month away we’ve seen some big shifts in player rankings as well as what teams may make moves who’s going to possibly be hitting the big stage with a big splash of the 24 draft we’re going to talk today about all the lead of speculation going into the draft regarding around player selections trades and more coming up next welcome back to another video here at topshelf hockey as I mentioned today we’re taking a look at the latest rumors and speculation heading into the 2024 NHL draft we’re just over a month away I will have another video coming out very shortly uh probably in the next day or two regarding an update mock draft uh some of the player rankings have really shifted we’ve seen some of the top um Scouts and some of the top uh Prospect people around uh kind of really have a shift in some of their thoughts around where some of the players may go so we’ll take a look at a different possible outcome um here over the next couple days so stay tuned for that coming to the channel now of course as I mentioned the draft is always a busy time there’s usually high level of activity when it comes to trades it’s the probably the prime time of the year that you see some of the most activity a lot of it is around draft picks but a lot of it is around players as well and sometimes giving up you know High uh leverage picks in order to obtain help for your team that can come in and uh you know give you a a boost right away so some of the teams you see be the most active are teams with the least amount of picks or the most amount of picks I mean some teams have dealt away a lot of draft Capital over the last number of years that is traditionally you can look at like the teams that are you know battling it out trying to battle for Stanley cops they don’t really care too much about Draft compitable when they’re in go for win now mode uh you look at the Florida Panthers they’re a prime example of a team that would have some of the lowest number of selections they’ve traded away a lot of first rounders um you know looking at other teams like Tampa they’ve given away a lot of picks as well um to some degree Toronto not quite as much uh you know a lot of other teams as well Vegas is another one so like they’re the teams that if they decided that there was a player they really liked and they had to uh to trade a roster player to get a high like a you know mid or high first round pick to grab a good Prospect you might see that happen so some of those teams like I said that are at the top of the league battling it out a lot of them also have salary cap problems so they might be like okay you know we have to move a player for cap reasons um so let’s see maybe if we can get a first round pick uh to one of the teams that are maybe in the middle of the draft and we can grab a really good Prospect so you often times see trades like that like for example the New York Islanders they are just made a trade here this uh recently with the Blackhawks we with some picks which we’ll talk about um shortly but like you know for example they’re rumored to have guys like Jean Gabrielle pasio on the trade market there’s some think that maybe there’s a chance Brock Nelson could be treated mainly because in Nelson’s case not that they don’t like the player um but he’s needing a contract extension soon so you have to decide at what point are you going to try to you know kind of sell High he’s still very productive but if you sign him and if his production falls off into his 30s like you’re hoping it you know it may not but if it does that can be really hard to get out of that point and you’re stuck with a bad contract so you kind of have to make decisions on who you’re going to bet on to not regress extend and you know who might be a better uh optimistic person to to move and get some good value out of now so like a team like the Islanders comes to mind they they also need to restock their Prospect cupboard so you know to move a guy if they could get a pick in the 15 to 20 range for Jean Gabriel pageo or Brock Nelson that would be a deal you’d see that’s a prime example of that uh on the other hand you get teams with the most picks which are teams that are typically rebuilding and have sold off a lot of veteran players in the last you know 2 three years in accumulated a lot of picks uh the teams with the most picks this year include the new franchise in Utah formerly the Arizona Coyotes uh so of course they’re basically a new franchise but at the same time they’re taking everything hockey operations related to the coyotes with them to start this franchise so basically the coyotes but all intents of purposes not uh they have 13 picks in total so they you know will they pick 13 players probably not so you could see some trades that might see them offering two picks for one nuts higher for example chances to move up and grab as much high in Talent as possible or they might be like you know this other team over here has a player they’d like to trade we have lots of picks maybe we can offer them two or three draft picks and get a really good player like things like that is what you’ll see so Utah has 13 picks Montreal has 12 the Flyers have 10 a bunch of teams have nine including uh the capitals the sherks the Ducks the blues the Kraken the flames uh Chicago did have nine picks now they’re down to eight uh after the trade they made Washington Ottawa Detroit also have eight too um so you know obviously they’re all teams that would have more draft Capital that you could expect more activity from uh they’re all in different spots with rebuilding retooling Etc so you can kind of expect different things out of them all but like as a precursor to the draft we saw an unexpected trade take place here very recently um in the last 24 48 hours here uh I’m not sure exactly when this video is going on YouTube but the trade took place on uh Friday um early afternoon uh you saw a trade between the Hawks and the Islanders where Chicago traded their a first round pick a second in two seconds so a pick number 20 54 and 61 now none of those picks were originally Blackhawk picks they’re all picks that came to them via trade from other teams the there’s a first rounder was the Tampa pick uh and the two seconds one originally belonged to La one was van Vancouver um and then they in return send those three picks to the Islanders and they get their first rounder which is pick 18 so it’s a couple spots higher than the 20th one that they had and then they get the second round pick pick number 50 but just of course you know four picks higher than 54 they had to obviously give up some value to to get those so really in all honesty this is a good win for the Islanders they get an extra asset for moving back here um and really um to move back two spots in the first round from 18 to 20 to me is not a big deal at all uh it’s surprising to see this trade go down well ahead of the draft because typically you don’t even know for sure who’s going to go in what order for for being picked so that’s tells me that they must have a player that they really like that they are concerned won’t be there at 20 but think they can get at 18 um it’s two spots though so it’s kind of weird like you think you would want to go to the draft first kind of have maybe side deal in your pocket as we get down to pick 16 17 you’re like okay it’s not looking good uh we don’t know if we’re going to be able to get this guy let’s let’s move up you know that’s usually when you see those trades um a lot of these conversations do happen ahead of time and then they’re you know come to fruition as you know the draft board gets filled and things unrivaled away you’re either hoping or they will or they won’t right so the Islanders do well here they get an extra extra draft pick uh so the BL Hawks I really hope there’s a player they like and I hope they get them because really I the Islanders win the street unless the Hawks walk away with a player that just blows everybody away at the 18th overall pick it’s it’s not going to be that you know the Islanders are smart to do this now the Islanders will get an extra pick out of this like I said which will have those three picks will have more value overall than the other two so they will either have more draft Capital to trade and pick up a player that comes in right away or or they can Reston their cupboard with an extra prospect that they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to get um you know there’s a lot of talent in the second round that might be a little further away from making the NHL but you know it’s It’s Not Unusual to see it happen so we’ll see how that works out for them um so certainly uh that’s an interesting move so far ahead of the draft lots of other teams are expected to be busy a lot of the teams picking in the top 10 to 15 spots are some of the teams that are most interesting to watch as well uh just G and going through down the list here you know uh some of this is related to what players are going to be available too like for example the reason I’m saying about the I’m going to do a new mock draft is there’s a lot of different interpretations of the draft order down there in the rankings like tsn’s Craig Button as well just put out his updated list and he really really changed things he now has the top four spots all being forwards whereas a lot of people thought the top four spots would likely be celebrini going first the Poss possibility existed of there being three Dem man in there or maybe maybe two Dem man or one other forward or at least one demon like everybody you talked and nobody had four forwards and he’s changed the rankings and he’s put demoda 2 which isn’t a shocker and Christian helenius up to three that to me I found very surprising and then te ainla so ainla has been a highriser he now has him in the top five um not real shocked by this uh in the case of like Kaden Lindstrom he has him going much later now I think it was around like 10 or 11 now in the case of lrom lrom didn’t really do anything to drop the only thing is is he had a lot of injuries this year so his his you know Body Works a smaller size you saw again at the u18s uh some of these players between the u18s and the World Championships some of them played in those tournaments and they’ve had a chance to kind of shine a little bit more here and kind of you know increase their value so to speak but if you look at the top five teams that are picking right now assuming that there’s no trades in that order you get the Sharks the Blackhawks the Ducks the jackets and the Habs uh so if the top four or if they do go in this direction you’d have celebrini demod helenius ainla now I don’t know that Columbus is going to take a forward here I mean to be honest I think if a guy like demidov was available I think they might do it it’s going to be tempting um you know uh so clearly we don’t know how that’s going to go now was Chicago getting Bard last year they going to take demov and wait and be patient or they going to go after one of the big top defensemen um you know it’s it’s a tough call um you know but according to button he thinks it’s going to go this way so and he like I said helenius at three now helenius if they did go if he did go three to the Ducks looking at what the ducks have already accumulated for picks okay I get that but really in the top five top six seven eight picks like you really need to go best player available I don’t think you go more more by positional need here I mean I do think helenes would be a great addition to the Ducks he’s the kind of player they don’t have I just don’t know that I’d take him at three I mean I’m not I don’t claim to be a prospect Guru I do watch a lot of Junior Hockey much as I can a lot of clips and highlights um I don’t know if I’ve seen enough out of helenius to put him at three though so we we’ll see obviously um but like a team like Columbus I wouldn’t be shocked if they move back a couple of things one we know the Calgary Flames would desperately love to get the son of Jerome ainla like there’s no doubt that that’s going to be big part of their radar um and I think Columbus would be quite content with a big defenseman like Sam Dickinson there’s a lot of connections between Columbus and the London Knights so for them to get a guy like Dickinson from London I think they’d be thrilled with that not to say for sure that they he’s their main pick if they stay at four but I think they’d be thrilled with it so if they could move back to where Calgary is at nine and get Dickinson and I don’t know how much certainty they would be there would be risky right because I don’t know there’s a lot of teams in between you know you’ve got 678 after Montreal I don’t know it’s risky but I could see Columbus maybe moving back because I think they’d be content to get uh Dickinson maybe Kaden Lindstrom um and I think depending on who’s there I think they’re a team to watch because I think Calgary will try to move up and to me a team like Columbus or Montreal at four or five would be the main ones to watch there in Montreal’s case they are expected to make a trade for a top young talent I don’t think they’re going to use this top five pick to do that I think if anything they’d use some of their other picks or players on their already drafted uh prospects in that regard to make that kind of move some people thought and still think that if M Montreal would like to get Kaden lindström that had some real size at Center and he makes a lot of sense for Montreal and you can make an argument at five that he would be the best player available too um some people think that for some reason if they can’t get lrom so let’s if he goes in the top four or if they’re confident enough that he’ll be available that you know 789 one of those other spots that they could also move back and get an extra extra asset here but I mean some of the top players that they’re rumored to be interested in looking at would be Trevor zigras mark Rossy in Minnesota we’ve heard Joel farby in Philly Kent Johnson out of Columbus again um so we’ll see what Columbus does they still need a GM right now which we’ll talk about here a little bit as well Alexander holtz’s name has been out there Marty NES Patrick l um I expect the hams to try to get one of these guys um and if they can’t get Kaden Lindstrom I don’t know it really depends on how the draft board goes if if demoda is gone and ainla is gone and they can’t get ledstrom or they think they can get him a few picks back I wouldn’t be shocked if they did move back but Montreal smart that way we’ll see what they do but they’re going to be active there’s no doubt about that Buffalo is another team to watch they’re picking 11th overall I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade that pick lots of speculation they could try to acquire an impact player whether it be a top four defenseman I know that’s what people were saying before I think it’s more likely to be a forward I mean they did make a trade at the deadline trading middle stop for bu I think their top 4D for the most part is good I think the only difference uh with Byrum is that he has an injury history so I guess you know I don’t know if they would have made that trade though if they didn’t feel com comfortable and confident that he could be a consistent top four D um so to me you’re not going to move 11th overall for another top four defenseman I think it’s more likely if they can get a top six forward so we’ll see I don’t think they’re going to go for a goal tender um I think it’s more likely that you see them add an experience back up to work with Lucan and then you see Levi maybe get a little bit more development time that’s what I would expect at a buffalo but I wouldn’t be shocked to see the move their pick um so we’ll see um I know New Jersey and another team to watch they could very easily move their first round pick for a gold Thunder I know they were previously linked to Jacob marstrom will they reignite those talks could they jump over to Boston with lenus alar uh UC SOS and Nashville I suspect and it’s pretty much you know been reported by enough people that it’s got to be Tom Fitzgerald his like top priority of the offseason now that he’s got a new head coach um to get a a better goalie to work with Jake Allen um so to me I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see them move this first rounder uh for one of these top goalies they’re going to go top goalie hunting for sure and to be honest there was a package involved that would believed and I don’t know that for this for sure but it’s believed to have been a first round pick Alexander Holtz maybe Dawson Mercer there was like two or three pieces like that that was going to be involved to get markstrom if that deal would have happened so I think that the devils and the Sabers very very likely uh where where they’re picking and where they’re at in their development and rebuild that to me that they could move those picks for sure um Carolina we know is going to be busy very much expected now that Marty NES is going to be dealt uh certainly wants a bigger role more power play time they got to sign Seth Jarvis they have a lot of ufas it’s going to be like there’s going to be a good good turnover in Carolina for sure and certainly n just wants more than they can offer uh when it comes to role and money um so he not necessarily going to I’m not sure he’s going to be linked to a a first round pick it could be but it’s not as likely I think a nature trade’s more of a hockey trade uh we’ve heard about Boston for allmark I’m not really sure that makes sense but there’s been some talk about it we’ve heard about Vancouver H for Philip heric maybe from Carolina’s perspective it’s it’s makes sense I’m not sure it makes sense from Vancouver’s side um and there’s other teams Montreal Philadelphia lots of teams have been you know checking in on nature so to speak um so we’ll see of course Carolina has a new GM with um former assistant GM uh Eric tulsky getting the interm GM Ru so I don’t think we’re going to see much of a shift in philosophy or how they go about their business but might maybe I guess a little bit he’ll have more of a voice Ottawa was expected to be very busy again I expect them to keep their pick uh you never know uh maybe it’s moved but at seven they can get a real good player I definitely see them taking a defenseman most likely if this draft goes the way we’re thinking here and if Craig buttons on anything I think a lot of the top forwards are going to be gone anyway they could decide to go for a guy like Berkeley katton if he’s still there though um he may not be a top five pick so he could be on the board or maybe they get a um ex said defenseman with size preferably a right shot but you get to go with the one who’s best available like the best of their craft so like whether it’s Zane perek whether it’s Sam Dickinson whether it’s Carter yakimchuk uh whether it’s Z buam one of those guys should be an Ottawa Senator but they’re also looking at Jacob chran Eric branstrom they’re all players that are expected to to be moved and this would be the prime time to do it so I fully suspect them to be having lots of conversations of course if the mate leaves are going to pull a trigger on a mitch Marner trade which we don’t know for sure we’ll have a better idea before we get there uh but it is expected that the Leafs are going to have conversations with him around either moving him or an extension because both are available uh to get a trade done they’re going to need his consent so they’re you know we’ll likely know if conversations have taken place to get a list of teams or not but if a maror trade is going to happen it doesn’t necessarily mean that this is if it doesn’t happen at the draft it’s not going to happen at all but it would be a prime time for it to happen but look at Matthew kachuck that happened later into July I wouldn’t rule out something like that depending on where things go but again uh when you get everybody kind of gathered together there’s more conversations sometimes the week or so after the draft leading in the free agency there’s still a decent amount of trade activity a lot of conversations usually get the ball rolling and then you see them kind of reconvene about a week later and then that’s when things start to get official so we’ll see but if the Leafs are going to do it um it’ll either happen or the foundation for to happen will be set so either way it’s going to be extremely busy lots of names that I just put out there that could be moved lots of picks that can be moved for players uh other like I said teams are going to be looking to move up or down uh do some Asset Management here so it’s going to be a very busy time should be a very fun time as well so certainly stay tuned we’ll keep you up to date with all the draft talk uh all the prospect rankings rumors around what might happen for picks and trades Etc so stay tuned to Top 1. To Utah: Mitch Marner + Timothy Liljegren + Nick Robertson

    To Toronto: Lawson Crouse + Sean Durzi + Shea Webber's contract for LTIR + 2024 1st rnd pick + 2025 2nd rnd pick + 2026 2nd rnd pick + 2024 3rd rnd pick

Just spitballin' – but I think both teams win on this one.

  2. That islanders/Blackhawks draft pick trade the other day was ridiculously silly.
You do that trade at the draft if your not sure your target is going to fall to you.
The player Chicago likes, could very well still be there at 20.

  3. 1st rd pick and Holtz and/or Mercer for Markstrom? Does Canadian media just make this shit up? I wouldn't trade any of those pieces straight up for Markstrom and there is 0.0 chance that Fitzgerald would either.

  4. I dont see any teams being concerned about drafting demidov, look whats transpiring with michkov.
What was supposed to be a 3 year wait is looking like 1 year.

  5. Toronto trades Marner to Columbus for #4 and draft Silayev. Toronto trades Knies, Robertson, Liligren and pick #23 to Utah for Josh Doan and pick #6 and draft Iginla.

  6. Your take is so short sighted. How Often do you see teams trade up during the draft? Very rarely. It’s really tough to do…especially as the draft board materializes and teams see what stud players are falling to them. And we know stud players will fall. They do every year. Giving up pick 61 (4 picks away from being a 3rd round pick) to better yourself in the 1st round and increase a pick towards the middle of the 2nd round carries way more value than they give up. We know that 2nd round picks have a 25% chance of actually making the NHL.. and roughly a 15% chance of being a difference maker. Hawks now have a better shot at grabbing a difference maker in the 1st round. Massive win by Kyle Davidson!

  7. I understand your point of the hawks need a a d-man but at 2 just like the ducks need to go BPA I see the hawks doing the same and taking Demidov

  8. Staios takes so long to make decisions, we will lose out on a lot of players etc. He has no idea what he is doing. He hired Green because he was the cheapest one available with NHL experience.

  9. Why use up the 7th overalk to replace Chychrun with another right hand defenceman ? Hes earning his paycheck .O k pick a big lefty D for sure butckeep Chychrun.

  10. The one thing I'm wondering, since Utah is a new franchise does that mean they would get their 1st round pick back? After all, it's not Utah's fault Arizona screwed up…

  11. On June 28, the Devils will trade Dougie Hamilton, Ondrej Palat, Jakub Malek, Daniil Misyul, the 10th pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and a 2025 1st-rounder to the Senators for Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle and on June 29, the Devils will trade Isaac Poulter, Graeme Clarke, Josh Filmon, Daniil Orlov, the 75th pick, and a 2025 3rd-rounder to the Kraken for Oliver Bjorkstrand and Cale Fleury, trade Jonas Siegenthaler, Jack Malone, Charlie Leddy, Seamus Casey, and the 91st pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft to the Blue Jackets for Ivan Provorov and Patrik Laine, trade John Marino, Akira Schmid, Nathan Bastian, Nolan Foote, the 139th pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and a 2025 4th-rounder to the Bruins for Jeremy Swayman, trade Nico Daws, Brian Halonen, Xavier Parent, Topias Vilen, and the 153rd pick to the Wild for Kirill Kaprizov, and trade Dylan Wendt, Cal Foote, Petr Hauser, Viktor Hurtig, the 171st pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and a 2025 conditional sixth-rounder to the Sabres for Connor Clifton and Alex Tuch.

  12. Honest Buffalo is going to be hard to predict. Adams doesn't let his ideas get leaked. I mean I remember the rumor for Mitts being a forward or goalie because he couldn't get a defenseman worth a damn.

Regardless I wouldn't be shocked if his move was for a veteran center to kill any rumor of Reinhart coming back.

  13. As a flames fan I cant WAIT to see the tears from Devils fans when CGY is picking 9th AND 10th at the draft 🤣🤣

  14. Until yesterday, I thought there was a chance Chicago would take Levshunov at #2 overall over Demidov. Now I no longer think so. The trade between the Islanders and the Black Hawks gave Chicago picks # 18 and 50. By moving up a couple of spots, the Hawks are in a position to draft Adam Jiricek, a right defenseman to go with Seth Jones on the right side. They already have Vlasic and Korchinski on the left. That allow s them to pass on Levshunov and take Demidov. Anaheim would then draft Levshunov to replace Jamie Drysdale, a #6 overall pick that they traded to get Cutter Gauthier. In that scenario, Columbus then chooses Cayden Lindstrom at #4.

  15. In the off season, there is the draft, and the trades that surround the draft, in-between we love the rumors, 😂 it's just harmless gossip!! R u new to this? Get used to it!!😊😊

  16. Islanders move back 2 picks in first round and 4 picks back in the second round to add an extra 2nd rounder. Not sure if it is a total win for Islanders. Lou has not drafted well at all and traded away 5 first round picks. Islanders have possibly the worst prospect pool of all 32 teams

  17. If Fitz trades any one of a top ten pick, Mercer, or Holtz let alone all three for a 35 year old goalie on an expensive contract, he would need to be shown the door. Reading comments below, looks like I’m not the only one that feels that way lol
