Lots of people talk about Hronek for Necas if we can't get a deal done, but then who would play with Hughes? I think it's just as important to have someone for our captain as for Petey. No one on the market can play 22+ minutes a night, and the only guy who can, Pesce, will be demanding a king's ransom. It'll definitely be easier to find a winger on the free agent block at this point than a 2D.
I think it would make more sense if we traded Hronek for his replacement. Looking around the league, there were only a couple options that fit the bill, with the most notable of which being Durzi, who also happens to be an RFA.
He took a huge step forward this year and his microstats paint him as borderline elite at transitioning the puck, up ice offense, and defending against zone entries. Keep in mind he did all of this in Arizona, with projecting towards bust territory J.J. Moser as his partner. Imagine what he could do with Hughes.

Unless he is not into moving to Utah they’d likely prefer Durzi to Hronek as he’ll likely come in at a cheaper AAV for them and he’s already on their roster.
Also I think they would only be able to sign Hronek to a 7yr (we as well with Durzi) as they weren’t on the roster before a certain date (trade deadline I think)
So it adds futher dual sign and trade complications for no reason ala Matthew Tkachuk, when Utah can just sign Durzi.
His attitude sucks (open on spitting chiclets about talking shit about the forwards) but I like his play a lot. We can fix him! 😂
I think people over estimate how much Hronek helped Hughes, and underestimate the flip side. Hronek and Ethen Bear both profiled similar and put up similar advanced stats. Don’t overlook Hughes ability to make another Hronek pop. Paying guys at their peak value is how you stay a middling team. We already have a number of guys being paid for the peak/max ability, we need more surplus value players. IMO, you hope your pro scouts can find another hidden jem, and you recoup assets. Rhonek over 8 years at anything north of 6.75 is worrisome
