  1. Couldn't agree with you more coach we don't need Patrick laine for any reason for exactly the reasons you mentioned thank you

  2. I don't know Hughes seems to like getting former first rounders. If Columbus retain 25% of Laine salary why not? Imagine Laine,Dach, Slaf on the 2nd with Cole,Nick and what golden boy we pick in the draft.(Lindstrom, Iggy,Demi???) We have a surplus of prospects we gonna have to take a risk eventually.Besides it is only 2 years left on his contract if he stays healthy and returns to form he will be another Hughes robbery!

  3. Patrick Laine is a gamble…. If he passes all his interviews with Habs management & Phycologists … I would flip Anderson 5.5$ + 26 pick ….. for Laine 8.7$, but Columbus team must maintain 2.7$ cap salary.

  4. Laine doesn't seem like the type of player that Hughes would gamble on. You're right, coach; there are too many red flags.

  5. coach when i floated the laine trade around i did it other places as well.
when the media runs out of ideas, they sometimes use things fans say .
its just like how 32 thoughts spawned the necas trade talk .

jf houle is under contract for 7 more days . ive been talking about that other places as well.

  6. nah i think the athletics selections are dumb .i dont agree with anything they ever say.
i also dont agree with selecting the 11th best player in the draft at 5 . that gets people fired .

  7. Far too many fans just think that by trading for Laine, it's just like waving a "Magic Wand" and all the Habs troubles will disapear overnight. I wouldnt touch Laine with a 10 foot pole at this point. Let some other 'desperate" GM strip away their assets and payroll to acquire Laine. Stay the course, Mr. Hughes. Patience, Habs fans.

  8. I don't look just at points I look at how the player plays the game reads the ice.
Slafkovsky issue for me is that he plays with blinkers he does not read the ice he stares at the puck and that is his only focus which is also why he struggles defensively because he doesn't look around.
Kapanen wil never be useful because he would never be better than the third line which means he will not produce offensively and he doesn't offer anything else.
I have not watched Caaton but have watched Sennecke and Lidstrom and iginla.I don't like Iginla or Sennecke Lidstrom yes I don't expect him to be amazing but solid yes with potential to be a top second line center.Iginla is just average at everything so his ceiling is second line but more like a third line player.
Laine is a MINUS player and once off the top line in Winniopeg his was a steady minus. His salary cap is insane I wouldn't touch him if we got him for free because the contract is insane.

  9. At 1st I was interested in Laine until I saw the contract and that he is in the player assistants program. I can't think of a realistic way to make a deal for him. It would be very high risk and also high reward if he can bounce back.

. Columbus would have to eat significant salary or have performance conditions involved. There are only 2 years left on his contract however if it is a bust that would be a painful 2 years, and a huge distraction. Lot of due diligence would have to be done.

  10. Great daily Coach..but absolutely no to Laine unless you want to destroy locker room climate…did they not learn from Drouin.?

Bizarre !

  12. Hey Coach – great explanation of the red flags.

The pros would be that he'd be cheaper than a Guentzel, Zegras or a Necas.

I don't know if CBJ is going to eat some of Laine"'s contract?

But MSL is a different type of coach, he might know something about Laine

I'll go back to what I know – it's like Bruins coach Montgomery bringing in veteran Danton Heinen on a PTO- Jim Montgomery knew the player personally

who had the best stats of his nhl career this past season, under Montgomery & contributed greatly.

This isn't a John Tortorella looking to plug and Play -MSL might know he has something he can work with. At a discount.

The money is the only thing that makes sense right now – I don't know if Columbus is in full fire sale mode?

But I have read several places they're looking to dump Laine's contract

This is also the type of player a few other teams might be looking at.

So I think Laine will be moved.

  13. I wouldn't draft Demidov, not that he won't be good- knee injuries, defensive play, lacking grit, size all I have is scouting reports but don't see him as a fit in Montreal. Lindstrom's injuries are said to be 100% recoverable and I wouldn't complain picking Iginla 5th. Letourneau, although played AAA and ranked at 40 is intriguing, Basha, Beaudoin, Masse, Boisvert, Hage…tough choice depending who's available at 26th. I expect that pick to be traded with Harris or Struble. Laine, don't go there, don't touch. As for trades, both D's and if possible forwards have to go. The only rumored trade I'd go for is Necas but don't see it happening unless it's a 3 team deal.

  14. As a Columbus fan I doubt this trade is possible because of the size of the contract involved. I believe Patrik is still salvageable. His issues are not drug or alcohol related, but tied to his mental health, most likely severe depression going back to his fathers death a couple of years ago. Personally, I like Patrik and would hate to see the Jackets give up on him because I believe he can still score 40 goals in the NHL. Most of his injuries have been of an unusual variety. A slew foot against Toronto caused him to fall into the boards and break his collarbone. He was attacked by Rasmus Andersson of Calgary after the game ended and sustained a concussion which caused him to miss a month. He has two years left on his contract, I don't believe he needs a change of scenery. You just need to find the keys to his head.
You probably didn't think much about the trade the Black Hawks made with the Islanders today, but it is very significant. Chicago traded picks number 20, 54 and 61 to the Islanders for picks numbered 18 and 50. Why? This allows Chicago to draft Ivan Demidov at #2 overall and then take Adam Jiricek at #18 as Jiricek is a right defenseman. The Hawks already have Vlasic and Korchinski on the left and Seth Jones on the right. The addition of Jiricek, who was originally projected to go at around #10 to #12 but saw his draft stock fall after a knee injury allows the Hawks to pass on Levshunkov , another right defenseman. In this instance, Levshunkov falls to the Ducks at #3 and Columbus would select Cayden Lindstrom at #4. That leaves Montreal a choice of Tij Iginla, Berkly Catton or Zayne Parekh.

  15. I remember RDS had broadcast 2 games of Caufield’s team, Wisconsin Badgers, over a week-end. He had been good at best. Kinda ok and trying to score here and there. It’s kinda who he seems to be…

  16. Hi Coach, good video review.. my thoughts on worlds so far: Caufield and Trevor Zegras disappointing personal performances at the international level. Connor Bedard had a hard time at the 2024 IIHF World Championship. Oliver Kapanen tournament viewed as a success, scoring six goals in eight games. Kapanen didn't look out of place playing against some of the world's best players.

Young Dylan Guenther was again a standout for Canada. Promising future for Slafkovsky and Nemec. In 15:58, Guhle took two shots on goal and minus-1 rating. So-so.

Slafkovsky obtained one assist, two shots on goal, minus-1 rating, two penalty minutes in 20:04 ice time.

The 20-year-old's tournament ends with eight assists in as many games. No goals. Yikes. Cheers

  17. I love how someone's random speculation on a potential trade somehow becomes gospel in the Montreal market. There's exactly zero evidence that this is a transaction that's being contemplated beyond an offhand comment made by Grant McCagg.
