I think Toronto losing in the first round is best for hockey they are obnoxious fans that don’t grow hockey. Montreal has fans all over the world , so they grow hockey. Any USA fan base grows hockey. Toronto is a loser franchise. Edmonton wining also grows hockey way more than the leafs. Toronto is already saturated
So you weren't actually asking about Canadian fans, just Torontonians. Well the Oilers have the third largest Canadian roster. No Canadian city has won the cup since 1993 and for but a very few times has there been a Canadian city in the final since. So yes, Canadian hockey fans should cheer on the Oilers. They are a Canadian team of mostly Canadian players with a hometown goalie. No sane person will wait for the Maple Leafs to win. GO OILERS!

As a lifelong Oilers fan I would cheer for any Canadian team ( even Calgary and I hate Calgary) but not the LEAFS
I can understand Flames fans not rooting for us, we’re mortal enemies. I can understand Leafs fans not rooting for us, they’re the centre of the universe and self-centred. But I can totally see other Canadian markets rooting for us.

I’ve noticed that hockey is very much a “my team is out, I’m done” type of sport. I feel like enough people watch the NBA, certainly the NFL, and even the MLB playoffs, regardless of who is playing.
I think hockey is hard to craft narratives for because it’s so hard for the best players to actually be in a position to win anything. McDavid is only just playing in his first finals, Matthews hasn’t even played in a conference finals yet and even Ovechkin only made it past the second round once.
Last year the finals were between a team that didn’t exist six years ago and the “other team from Florida”. And then it wound up being a blow out.

I am born and raised as a oiler fan first but if another Canadian team were in it I would root for them too. I've never seen a Canadian team win so it would be nice to know that Canada still got it. However, anyone that says you should root for them because your Canadian is wrong. Fans are loyal to their city or to their country as it should be.
Only wanna see mcdavid and hymen win the cup, the rest don’t deserve it. Draistel crys like a baby over everything and can’t produce any points without mcdavid.
Definitely not Canada’s team. I watch Oilers games, hoping the other team wins. Watching and routing are two different things, as Sam said.
