Phil Tomasino and Juuso Pärssinen are two forwards Nashville Predators fans hoped to see permanently in gold last season, but both ended up finishing 2023-2024 in Milwaukee. On today’s Locked On Predators we talk about Andrew Brunette’s comments at the end of the season about Phil Tomasino and discuss what the franchise is still waiting to see. Both Tomasino and Pärssinen are no longer waivers exempt, and we talk about how the coming season’s decisions could be affected by their status. We also talk about Egor Afanasyev and Yaroslav Askarov. What did we learn from these two players in their brief stints with Nashville?

Bruno’s brutal honesty is so refreshing. I hate “coach speak” so much. I get that you can’t be mean, but you can let a guy know that he’s stinking up the place without breaking him down.
In his first season, Joe Thornton scored 3 goals in 55 games. Not saying any of Tomasino, Parssinen, Glass or Afanasyev are going to become stars, but young players need time and a stable environment to progress. The example Emma gave where a red-hot Afanasyev was called up but sat on the bench except for two brutal Nashville losses shows that at times, Preds' coaches haven't shown enough patience with emerging players and have actually disrupted their development. I do recall that at the end of the '23 season, Afanasyev got an extended look due to injuries, and he was physical, showed offensive creativity and had plenty of scoring chances despite only getting the one goal. He is big and can produce on a scoring line. Tomasino has abundant speed and a good shot, which he showed in his rookie season, but his lack of physicality and tenacity made coaches reluctant to put him on a top line where he belongs. And Parssinen is a big, versatile forward who could be deployed in a variety of ways, both defensively and offensively. I think all three players are NHL-worthy in the right circumstances, and I thought Tomasino complements a physical center with his speed. He was effective with McCarron, but that was in a 4th line role. Tomasino also got some time with Cody Glass, and they played with Tolvanen a couple of games in the Colorado playoff series of '22 and seemed to have chemistry despite the team being overwhelmed and deflated by Saros' injury that year. If I was an NHL GM, I'd try to grab any of these players from the Preds as I think all of them can play. I'd rather gamble on Tomasino and Afanasyev, but I'm afraid Trotz will go with more experienced players he trusts, like Beauvillier.
