The Leafs have just one option and that is tell the Marner camp that he is not going to be extended under any circumstances and leave it at that. Let him either become a partner in putting together a mutually beneficial trade or come back for one last year and play for his future somewhere else. Marner walking into free agency for nothing is not ideal but an even worse scenario is overpaying him again and continuing with a top heavy cap structure.

In his career, Marner has 10 less points than Matthews, and has played 14 more games. Matthews is overpaid too. He's a great goal scorer, but he can't take over a game and drive play like a MacKinnon or McDavid can in my opinion.

Look, I know this channel is called the Toronto sports network and all, but can you please stop talking about the Leafs until like August or something? They have not been relevant to talk about since early May. They have won a singe playoff series in 7 straight playoff appearances. They are the same team that will get you through the regular season every year, but cannot find that extra gear in the playoffs. They are not relevant to talk about at all right now.
I think Mitch and his agent need to read the room. It's obvious Leaf fans want him gone and Leaf management know they need to unload one of their more expensive players to be able to afford a franchise goalie or defenceman. Mitch is the odd man out because they won't be able to move Tavares. Mitch you need to move on.
