I am not as concerned about Marner walking after the upcoming season. That frees up a lot of salary room for the Leafs to sign one or two free agents to meet their needs. And Tavaresās salary will be much lower after the upcoming season. So thereās more salary room. The Leafs best seasons will be 2005-6 and 2006-7.
Marner will be motivated to have a good season with the Leafs in order to maximize his value in the free agent market.
When Sundin walked, I donāt know why the Leafs didnāt use the gained salary space to sign a couple of good free agents.

I disagree with the consensus view that the Leafs could get a nice return by trading Marner. He's got 1 year left on his current contract at a $10.9M cap hit which means he's essentially a one year rental at a steep cap hit. The only scenario where I could see the Leafs getting a good return would be in a sign-and-trade scenario which is very unlikely as Marner, or any player for that matter, would want to test free agency.

Mitch doesnāt owe Leaf Executives and Leaf Fans anything. Mitch has been a regular season success. I respect Marner for honouring his contract and planning to play well next season.Leaf Fans why not be gracious and thankful to Mitch? Mitch doesnāt need to be traded by the Leafs. When his contract expires – Mitch can walk away and sign anywhere. Dubas in Pittsburgh has a great depth of knowledge on Mitchās play. š

Everyone listening to all the media. Go checkout Treliving's past. He let blake wheeler walk for nothing in Arizona. He signed a #1 goalie in Calgary then he ripped apart the core for little to nothing. Now look what Treliving has done for the leafs so far. Had muzzin, murray, klingberg on the LTIR COULD of used that capspace. He had 22mil thisnpast offseason knowing leafs need to retool the D. His only answer…klingberg, yet another puck moving D who lacks defense. Now ask yourself this…Did Treliving mismanage/sabotage this past season? He gave the team and the coach a plethora of 3rd pairing dmen forced to play minutes they shouldnt be, added a few 7th dmen in the mix and expected a result in the playoffs. Samsonov had his worst year to date and did nothing about it. The stop gap additions of edmonson,beniot are nothing more then 3rd pairing….at best. The money used on bertuzzi and domi should of gone to top 4 D. My bet is he will resign one or both of those when that cap needs to go to D and a 1a or 1b goalie. The leafs have a long history of trading and or signing a name, rather then playing and developing their youth. Verhaeghe for malgin, mason marchment for grabner just to name a few. You never find diamonds in the ruff when u give them away for a name. Example. Knies=bertuzzi. Knies had 8 less points and a huge difference in cap hit. Knies is only going to get better. Robertson needs icetime to develop. He has been hindered by not getting enough nhl icetime. Facts are facts. The problem in Toronto is the entire front office. NOT one highly skilled player. Trading Marner isnt going to change the problem in Toronto. It will allow the gm to sign names lol like bertuzzi, domi and others. That wont address the actual needs of the team. Top 4 D and a goalie. With treliving at the helm we will witness the beginning of the end of the Mathews era. Watch.
Mitch is a very talented player, but the Leafs can also sit his ass in the booth & have TSN & Sportsnet focus the camera on him during the game as he sulks. Therefore making his value as a team player lower his AAV & next contract length. Sure, he can be signed by anyone else, but for chemistry's sake, no one GOOD or BIG will want him. ie, NYR, COL, VGK, BOS etc. Mitch has to listen to Tre & Berube & make it work or separate amicably to keep all their heads up high.
