Gloves: The story of Phil Pritchard and the Stanley Cup | NHL on ESPN

Like many sports, hockey is a game rich with tradition and superstition. One of the more profound unwritten rules of the game is this: unless you’ve won the Stanley Cup, you don’t touch the Stanley Cup. No one exemplifies that more than Phil Pritchard, who has been the keeper of the cup for three decades. Pritchard has become synonymous with the trademark white gloves he wears when handling the trophy. It’s the ultimate symbol of reverence, not for 37 pounds of sterling silver, but for the dedication and sacrifice necessary to win it.

  1. Life long stars fan here. In February of 2020, I visited the hockey hall of fame and sneakily touched the cup while walking around to “look at it.” In that same year to world went to hell and my team lost in the Final.

Take it from me, don’t touch it unless you’ve earned it or there are consequences
