HIGHLIGHTS: Gavin Sheets Blasts First Career GRAND SLAM in Win over Red Sox (6.8.24)

The White Sox saw a strong performance from pitcher Nick Nastrini in his sixth appearance of the year. The young right-hander pitched 4.1 innings, striking out five, allowing only one hit, and holding the Red Sox scoreless until the 5th inning.

The Red Sox got on the board with a solo home run by Bobby Dalbec in the 5th inning.

In response, in the bottom of the 5th, the White Sox offense ignited. Danny Mendick doubled, followed by walks to Corey Julks and Zach DeLoach, loading the bases. Andrew Vaughn then singled to score Mendick, tying the game 1-1. With the bases still loaded, Gavin Sheets launched his first career grand slam off Red Sox pitcher Brayan Bello, giving the White Sox a commanding lead.

Paul DeJong padded the score for the good guys with a solo home run, his 11th of the year.

The bullpen came up big as the combination of Tanner Banks (1.2 innings), John Brebbia (1.0 inning), Jordan Leasure (1.0 inning), and Michael Kopech (1.0 inning) held the Red Sox scoreless to end the game. Notably, this marked Tanner Banks’ first win of the season.

The White Sox defeated the Boston Red Sox, 6-1, at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois on June 8, 2024.

  1. I think a "bout time" is due. The umpire was wrong all day. Kopech should have been three up three down if it weren't for him.

  2. This past week, I was in Fredericksburg VA, and so were the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers. I saw them beat the FredNats 5-0 and 7-2. (They also won the next two games, though they lost today. Series concludes tomorrow.) Note that these Baby Sox are first in their division.

I was impressed with starters Jake Bockenstedt and Jake Peppers. Primarily it was their ability to keep the pitch count low. Albertson Asigen played center in the first game, and I have to tell you he has range. I like the way he can run down a fly ball.

One thing the team as a whole needs to work on is that they do leave a few too many men on base. But they did dominate Fredericksburg, which has now fallen in the standings.

Yes, I know you can't judge from two games. But I just want to say there is hope on the horizon.
