What a disaster Sabres offseason looks like

what does a Sabers disaster look like this offseason the disaster scenario and I’ve got a Jeff Skinner trade idea plus what is happening to cap friendly if you’re a user of that website you might be as mad as I am all coming up here in the lockdown Sabers [Music] podcast your locked on Sabers your daily podcast on the Buffalo Sabers part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and sneaky dbsi excited to come to you today a lot of good stuff one thing that’s not good stuff that is going to drive me crazy which is Cap friendly going away and it’s for the stupidest reason ever but we’ll get to that a little bit later on if you’re a user of that website maybe you’re as mad as I am if not I’ll explain in the third segment of today’s show what does a disaster off season look like for the Buffalo Savers what is the worst case scenario we’ll play that out and I’ve got an idea for a Jeff Skinner trade that was inspired by listening to 32 thoughts this last weekend get to that as well do want to start though today with the Stanley Cup final game two tonight Monday night or Monday recording here so game two we’ll see what we get Edmonton and Florida Edmonton Far and Away outplayed Florida in game one but Serge bosski stands on his head and comes away with the shut out Breakaway saves that rolling save that I didn’t realize he got a piece of until after the game on Ryan nen Hopkins the Panthers won that game because of Sergey bosski but I told you last week not that Skinner that Stuart Skinner had a bad game but my theory on why Florida was a definitive favorite in this series was not just that they’re deeper but because I think that could be offset by how good McDavid is and D Idol but I just trust bosski a lot more than I do Stuart Skinner but brosi has shed that Narrative of his and it wasn’t a false narrative it was true he used to stink in the postseason but he has absolutely turned that around in the last I usually like to put like a fiveyear time period on that really since he got to Florida and especially the last three years um if you go way back to the 201819 season that’s five years ago he that was the year in Columbus where he had that that super good uh they swept Tampa he was unbelievable 925 save percentage in 10 games then he got to Florida and he’s really been good in the playoffs ever since he had a couple of bad games in the 21 playoffs but that was only three games um otherwise and he started two of them otherwise he’s been he’s been fantastic in the postseason he is no longer that goalie that you saw way back in the last saber playoff series 2011 and the uh Sabers chased him very early on in that series bosski as a young rookie uh 22 years old got chased by the Savers in back-to-back or in not in game one but game two he got chased and he really never got back in it was Michael Leighton and uh Brian buet from there on and there forth and that set a few years period there where he’s stunk in the playoffs um but he did get rolling after that uh once he got to Florida so he’s the story of the series through one game it’s only one game and again by the time you listen this maybe we’ll have a second game on R bels was listening to 32 thoughts over the weekend and heard Jeff Merrick and um Elliot fredman you know offseason hockey banter they were going back and forth about the San Jose Sharks they were arguing back back and forth about San Jose and I know what you’re thinking like how is anybody worked up right now on the San Jose Sharks they have the first overall pick but there’s no debate on that like it’s mlin celebrini and I don’t think I’ve seen anybody that thinks he’s not the number one pick so what were they arguing about they were going back and forth on whether or not it makes sense to keep celebrini in the NHL in after his he’s drafted and it was a little bit of a debate of not whether he’s ready I think they agreed he is but are the sharks ready for him and Elliott’s point was that is not what it should be about let him learn in the NHL if he’s NHL ready put him in the NHL don’t worry about who his teammates were and that was Jeff’s point I don’t like his point was I don’t like putting this kid in if I can’t surround him with anybody worth playing with I don’t want to throw him to the Wolves when he’s got AHL quality team Ates because San Jose is the worst team in the league and they are not good and they’re not going to be very good at all this year so I heard that and I don’t want to get on the debate but what came to my mind is what Chicago did last year Chic and how the sabes could fit into this what Chicago did last year with Connor Bard is they knew they had a horrible team horrible team that was last place in the NHL and had no business you know being competitive at all didn’t have good linemates for their number one overall pick so what they do they made a it didn’t really end up coming to fruition because he was hurt all year but what they tried to do was they took a cap dump player from Boston in former Buffalo saber Taylor Hall and they basically took on Taylor Hall for almost nothing in return because Boston wanted to shed the final two years of his $6 million a year contract and Chicago’s plan think we saw it only in 10 games was that guy is going to come in and we’ll eat those two bad years of contract because he’s better than anything we have to play with Connor Bard so that’s what they did he got hurt the sabes have an equivalent of that if San Jose wants to just grab a guy that can be a quality mate that they could get for nothing they could get for nothing just to play with Macklin celebrini and give him some Talent on his line and at the same time help them get to the cap floor we had the cap floor com in officially at $65 million this weekend the NHL announcing that officially and San Jose finds themselves about 145 million under the cap floor what could help help them get to the cap floor and give them the best linemate they’d have on the roster to play with their rookie 18-year-old is Jeff Skinner now I don’t know that they would just take that contract you know WIP it clean like for free Taylor Hall had two years at $6 million when Chicago acquired him um Skinner got three years at 9 million so the neigh might need to be willing to eat some salary in this circumstance but I think the match makes sense San Jose they want they would probably want quality linemates for their rookie first overall pick and they probably don’t want to give up anything to get it and they’re going to need to take on some salary to help get to the cap floor the Sabres want to clear out Jeff Skinner’s salary I think they should um and open up a spot in the top six I think it’s the best of both worlds it’s not perfect because again it’s a lot of money and you might have to make the financials work where the Sabers take some back you could figure that out in a negotiation but I think the the concept of Jeff Skinner going to San Jose to play with mlin celebrini and affording the Sabres that cap space I think makes a lot of sense for both sides um Mike Greer has a relationship with Lindy I don’t know if he has any relationship with Kevin Adams the GM of the sharks um but I’m sure they would know each other other at least a little bit from the couple of years that they’ve both been GM so we’ll see probably not going to happen but just an idea to throw out there I think there could be a market for Jeff Skinner in the right circumstance for a team that’s needing help to get to the cap floor Utah by the way is another team the sharks are 15 million under the cap floor the the Utah hockey team is $21 million under the cap floor when we come back what does a disaster offseason look like for the Buffalo Sabres and then I got to get to my cap friendly Point all ahead here on the lockdown Sabers podcast we are presented by FanDuel Sportsbook it is that time of year with the finals going on you’re not already a texter for locked on Sabers you can sign up by going to join sub text.com loock ons saers what does the ultimate disaster offseason look like for the Sabers I’ve talked about what the perfect off season looks like which incorporates getting a third line Center and and I think the perfect one would be one blockbuster trade if you can pull it off in your top six I though also want to explore what’s the worst case scenario in my opinion the worst case scenario for the Sabers this off season is that nothing happens and on top of that it’s not even their own doing it’s a simple reality of the league not wanting to go to Buffalo that is to me the disaster scenario but that does come with some specifics to me disaster looks like pton Krebs is still your third line Center you couldn’t find yourself to a better idea during the summer than pton Krebs coming back to be your third line Center I say that as someone that was once not even that long ago like four months ago three months ago was the biggest Krebs Defender you’d find out there my theory on that was always I don’t know what he looks like with talented linemates I have no idea he’s never done it for more than two three games at a time you continue to playing with kyoso and zus garson’s and he does fine in that role but I got no idea if he could score I got no idea if he could playmake how am I supposed to know that the guys he would be passing to never score never in the scoring never have the puck there’s no way to tell so they traded Casey midat then we got more of a look at it we got 20 games and I know that’s not a huge sample but it’s a lot bigger than what we had before and I just needed some flashes even if they wasn’t consistent even if the numbers weren’t there I needed to see some flashes some skilled plays some plays that were close to coming to fruition I didn’t see it I didn’t see any of it I never I didn’t see anything that makes me hope that oh no it was just the line mates that was it KBS is going to be a good player the only reason he didn’t score or didn’t have points before it’s because he played with Oso and gurgenson I didn’t see any confirmation on that theory in the games he played with you know he was not playing with Tage Thompson he was not playing with Alex tuck um he played though with Jeff Skinner and that didn’t work he did and Skinner listen we talked about Skinner Skinner can score with good centerman never scored with pton Krebs uh he played with Zack Benson a good amount and that didn’t really work out not offensively um he got his fix with different skilled players and I just never saw anything that I really liked out of Pyon crib so to me number one on the disaster list might be he is your third line Center going into next season uh number two on that list would be trying to acquire another top six forward not finding your way to him and rookies more than one get pushed into the mix uh again something that I usually like to see teams do which is trust the rookies try them out don’t block them give them room to breathe play them with talent and find out what you’ve got I’m not into that for more than one guy in the sabers team next year they’re already the youngest team in the league they’ve been the youngest team in the league and I’m not sick of the youth movement but I just don’t need to see two three rookies thrust into the mix here that can’t be the answer of all the the years here with Granado and Adams which it’s been three four years and know Granado’s gone where it was youth the youth movement they’re going to grow together they’re going to Stew together and they’re all going to come up at the same time the chemistry is going to be built and you know well we did this in 0506 this is what we’re going to do that remember 0506 was not about the all just the Young guys the moment Brier and jury left that team wasn’t good it was an average hockey team the moment the veteran guys that were leading the charge left so I don’t know how much you want to use that as an example of hey I just need the young guys you need some high-end Talent too and between seavoy Kulik Roseanne I got one spot for him gladly one spot for one of the rookies but two or three a fourth of your lineup or a little more than that being dedicated to teenagers when you’ve already tried that for three years in a row to me that would be an admission of you didn’t find what you were looking for in the off season and you’re falling back on the young guys again because you couldn’t find your way to proven veteran Commodities so that would be a part of the disaster scenario for me as well I don’t really know there’s anything on the blue line that I would consider that part of the disaster and I don’t know that I would consider anything a net a disaster um you know all right no I got one more for you given my personal opinion on Uka Lucan which is loved what I saw has earned EV every right to be the number one goenda about that whatsoever at all I think you’d be insane to to not admit that it’s only one year it’s only one year goendale in the NHL I got to see it again I want to see it again I hope the sabes need to see it again so I’ll include in my disaster offseason my personal disaster offseason would be kbs’s back as third line Center you have multiple rookies that have to play opening night in the in the in the forward mix and you’ve do I want to call it panicked you’ve what whatever you want to call it I might call it panicked you”ve given ukap peka lukanin the longterm deal you gave him after one good year the seven-year contract the eight-year contract to me that’s a disaster because I really think that is crazy risky crazy crazy risky and with Levi in the mix in the future I just don’t think it’s necessary so those would be my big three pieces of a disaster off season Krebs has to be your third line Center again multiple rookies in the opening night lineup and you’ve signed Lucan in to a seven or eight-year contract that to me is a disaster offseason for the Sabres if you have an idea of what would be included in a disaster offseason let me know what you think when we come back what is happening to cap friendly if you’re a user of this website you’re probably about as mad as I am if you didn’t hear the news I hate to do this to you it’s going away that’s coming save that’s policygenius.com final segment here in the on Savers podcast all right one of the biggest tools one of the biggest tools that I use covering this team a lot of fans use the armchair GM tool is good cap friendly who has existed for like a decade now ever since capgeek cap geek’s founder passed away about a a long time a while ago now and cap friendly filled the void and it’s been a great great website for a long time it’s going away because as Elliot Freedman has reported the Washington Capitals are buying cap friendly for their own use for the interface for other stuff that they own proprietary stuff and they’re going to shut down the site after the NHL draft horrible absolutely horrible news I fuming about this because like I there are other sites where you could get this information but all of them right now maybe someone will step up and really improve things but right now they all pale in comparison to cap friendly and you get those interactive tools you get the armchair GM tool trade machine um there’s mock draft stuff you can use there I I the even using them for you know CBA stuff sometimes it’s a lot easier than even you know controlled effing the the uh the CBA itself um it’s just such a useful tool and I know fans use it I know everyone in the hockey media uses it and the capitals but I guess the reason I’m most mad about it is I don’t understand why the capitals are really doing it you know like I read the story from fredman about it and there part of that is there are other NHL teams that have contracts with cap friendly to use some of their services but like you it’s a public website you don’t have Washington Capitals you don’t have your own system that you use to keep track of other teams salary cap to keep track of your own players contracts like I I just don’t get what what what have you been doing for 10 years what have you been doing for 20 years with the with the with the salary cap why do you need cap friendly you can’t come up with something on your own you’ve got to ruin it for everybody else it’s not like any this most of this 99% of the site is just out there right like I I can go get the same information I guess from like puckpedia um or spot track but so why do you need cap friendly you’re not getting new information from cap friendly I’m just confused as to that why in the world the capitals feel that they need to spend money to ruin this for everybody else to have it just for themselves it’s very confusing to me I hate it and it’s making me want to rot against the Washington Capitals if I didn’t already have a reason I guess I really didn’t I’ve been rooting for oetkin to break the goal record I’m not going to stop rooting for him to do that um go go everyone that plays the capitals this year the worst I I’m I’m fuming about this again I’m hoping like puckpedia or somebody really improves their interface um going forward because cap friendly has become so easy to use and I just don’t think any of the other sites are near as easy to use as cap friendly is so enjoy the final few weeks the final month I guess of um easily to me the best you know the best website uh that covers this kind of stuff for uh for hockey going away don’t understand it don’t understand the Caps all right that’s it for us today here in the lockdown Savers podcast you want to get in a thought on your idea of what a disaster offseason would look like or uh if you got trade ideas shoot them my way you could do that by going to our text line at join sub text.com lockdowns saers that’s the sign up if you already 1. Worst off season….resign Olofsson, Girgenson and Jost . Jost as your 4th line centre and Krebs 3rd line centre!
Best off season ….trade 11th overall pick in a package for Boone Jenner CBJ, Sam Bennett FLA, Cole Perfetti Win, OR Morgan Frost Philadelphia
    2. Sign either UFA Dakota Joshua Van or Ryan Lomberg FLA as winger to join Greenway & Krebs on the 4th line.
    3. Sign UFA D man Brett Pesce Carolina to partner Owen Power. Samuelsson moves to 3rd pair with Cifton and Ryan Johnson is 7th D .
    Jokiharju is traded.

  2. again skinner has a full no movement clause. He isn't going anywhere unless its to the Leafs. Not happening. they will have to by him out.

  3. Payton Krebs is ONLY 23 YEARS OLD. We already know how players can come around later with Tage and Casey. Look at Florida with Samson, Bennett, Evan Rodriguez. Vancouver went far with Zadorov and Myers.

  4. Why the hell would skinner waive his no movement clause to go to last place team. He gains nothing in this scenario.

    Worst case off-season:
    1. Relying on 4 rookies from Rochester to fill all the opening forward spots. Not making trades/signing FAs to improve grit and talent.

Or 2. Bringing 2 or more of these players back: okie, girgs, jost, Robinson, or Krebs.

Or 3. Quinn gets injured and nothing gets done.

  5. Send UPL to arbitration looking for a 2 yrs. Then, if he stays consistent. Longterm deal or move him out for Levi to take over

  6. Worst off-season? You mean like re-signing Jost, Girgs, and Okposo for 7M dollars. Signing the corpse of Eric Johnson and overpaying for another 3rd pair defensemen. Deciding to hold onto the likes of Olofsson and Comrie. And my favorite was choosing not to find a replacement for Quinn. At least Adams may have aced the draft. Benson and Wahlberg are promising.

  7. My best guess on why the Capitals are acquiring Capfriendly is for the name alone. It makes more sense that they could not use the name themselves and have no interest in any other aspect other than to own the web domain.

  8. Skinner isn't waiving him no movement clause unless it's to a contender. You just talk out your but. If we are giving him away, retaining 4.5 mil a year for the next 3 years, and not getting anything in return for it… That move makes no sense when we got over 20 mil in cap space and it will only cost us 2 million a year for 4 years if we wait until next year to buy him out. And why is it so important to move him this year when we have a new coach that holds players accountable? Why not see what he looks like under ruff?

  9. Laughable.. that the sharks would even be able to stop laughing at a skinner deal… Offseason Disaster: They resign ANY of their UFA's (well, can keep Robinson).. They need to let ALL of the rest walk. RFA's are fine.. our UFA's are our worst parts. 1 or 2 star signings won't get this team over the hump.. If they do go UFA shopping, they have to choose wisely.. Levi is a year at the most away from being our #1 UPL should get nothing more than a bridge. Levi will push him out before the end of next year (if he's not run out before) Resigning our UFA is worse than all rookies at this point… as far as Cap Friendly.. May the washington capitals NEVER SEE second worst until they undo their damage.. I wish nothing but the basement and failed draft picks…

  10. You’d be lucky if anybody even considers taking Skinner. Unfortunately, I expect a buyout on his contract. Sorry, Joe. I don’t think he’s moving.
