Well that’s a good sign. Being nervous about term wasn’t exactly Treliving’s strength.

Yeah, I’d imagine both would/could get longer term with their contracts on the open market. I’d be comfortable giving both extensions in the 4-5 year range. But I can’t fault either guy for wanting to get the bag.

Here’s a recap of the full interview that I posted in the daily talk thread,

    Interview link: https://youtu.be/pB_ooxgMj78?si=9Gi3foyjPgfQP0Lj

Mitch’s agent Darren Ferris has a history of bring players to free agency and him a Treliving talked out in the open at the combine (also agent for Joel Edmundson)

Marner situation is more complicated than people make it out to be because of contract Mitch wants, NMC and do both sides want to deal with the outside noise and will want to come out as “winners”

Doesn’t think Berube would be bothered with Marner staying without a contract

Thinks Keefe was easy on Mitch and wonder will Berube change that

Willy was on the Market last year

Gut tells him it’s going to carry over to next year because it’s going to be hard to convince Mitch to leave and playing with Auston gives him best chance to put up points for a new contract (here or somewhere else) plus close to family and so on.

Mitch’s first choice is to stay but thinks he knows it might be it.

Would love Markstrom but it’s very hard trade to make and told other teams are more likely.

People think Vegas will be interested in Mitch

Going to try and get the best possible goalie that they can afford.

Think they like Zadorov, Tanev, Montour, Pesce, Walker and are going try and get at least two defenceman in free agency

Pesce looking for 6×6 and Florida is going try and resign Montour but might be difficult

Domi wants term and thinks Toronto is nervous to give it to him and very similar with Bertuzzi

If they lose any of their free agents they want back it will be because of term not AAV

  4. I still believe that Domi is the guy that is worth retaining if the Leafs can only keep one

  5. thewolfshead

Are they nervous on term in general or just with regard to Bertuzzi and Domi? If it’s in general I don’t really get it because in reality you have until the end of Matthews’ deal and then probably gotta re-evaluate everything and if he’s gone or they’re not in a position to compete then who cares.

If they want top6 money, then they need to be open to <5 yr deals. If they can take an AAV that allows them to play a depth role for the back half of the contract then I’m fine signing up for 8yrs. What I don’t want to see is top6 money for ~6yrs

Keep Bertuzzi and Domi – they have an attitude that the team needs and they are good enough where it wont be drowned out by the better players. There’s a good chance it could reflect on the remaining players and our young guys. Big 3 are too far gone

My curve for Domi would be something like:

    2.5 Mil, 8 years

    3.5 mil, 5 years

    4.5 mil, 2 years.

Weird how they’re worried about term. 7 years from now we could be in rebuild mode again since our stars will be past their primes. So to keep the cap down I wouldn’t mind giving the extra year or two

  10. Give them term, but stiplate that getting term comes with back loaded bonuses and absolutely no NTC/NMCs.

    Take it or leave it.

  11. I feel like Domi/Bertuzzi would be nice to retain but aren’t mandatory

Make your best offer to them and move on if they’re trying to squeeze more

  12. elifreeze

Four years would be the sweet spot. It coincides with Matthews’ contract and four years is long enough to be considered “long term.”

  13. The_Quackening

Domi is a must have IMO.

Im not 100% sold on Bert.

  14. I hate this crap that comes with players playing in Toronto.

What has Domi done to deserve a raise? He had 9 goals (4 fewer than Kerfoot this year)… Literally each fight probably added $300k to his contract. As long as you “look” like you want to help the team win, fans and media will love you. He’s never been able to stick with a team, and while he may fit the mix nicely here, ya gotta wonder who you’re competing against?

He WANTS to be here (apparently), and we’re still being fed crap about him getting $5M+/year at term…

That being said. I was WRONG about Domi. He brought a lot more physicality then I was expecting, and I REALLY liked him on the team. He is an incredible passer and can play with our top players.. but ultimately, we were no better off.

Matthews had a historic year, Nylander had his best ever, Tavares was still solid and Mitch really picked up steam as the year went on. So all of our top guys (in the regular season at least) produced on sum what we could have hoped for..and we still took a step back (in the regular season and playoffs).

While i absolutely loved Domi going to bat for his teammates, did it ultimately make the team better? IDK. I think he’s a guy you love to have at $3M, but once you start creeping above that, esp at long term you gotta reconsider.

  15. The Leafs are afraid of commitment, so relatable 😭

  16. r3almaplesyrup

The Keith Pelley comment in the segment is definitely interesting

  17. SweatyShib

Marner should gamble with his life and sign in San Jose on a 12.8×4 contract

50mil for 4 years of his life where that team is seriously looking like they’re gonna be getting wins in the next year or two

  18. nogoodnamesleft47

I’d love Domi long term. Bertuzzi isn’t worth it.

  19. BlessedCleanApe

Offer them 2 year deals and go from there
