How’s this for interesting NHL offseason stories. In 2017, the New Jersey Devils drafted Swiss centre Nico Hischier 1st overall out of the Halifax Mooseheads organization in the QMJHL. He’s had a steady uptrend in the NHL, and has proven himself as one of the top younger players in the league.

With the New Jersey Devils eliminated from the play-in series and subsequently the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Hischier has decided to use this time to enlist himself in the Swiss military, completing his mandatory obligation to serve.

  1. On the topic of captaincy, I’d give the C to Travis Zajac right now and then when he retires (which we have to think is relatively soon) Hischier will be ready to take the captaincy at that time

  2. Nico actually doesn’t have to do the service. He technically lives abroad so he is exempt.

  3. Even though his points may not show it this current season Nico's game has been improving every year. The points were not there this year but his 2 way defensive game and faceoffs were solid this season.

  4. Swiss military 😂 has Switzerland ever actually gone to war with anyone? But I think military training would be good for his career and could make him an elite athlete

  5. He can opt for a delay for 4 years and most likely will have to pay a yearly fine, with his contract it is well affordable.

  6. I actually really like it. He found a way to stay productive and live a different life experience during the break

  7. the reason why nico chose to complete it is because it’s not as challenging as somewhere else. aspecially being a athlete. in an interview he said they mainly just workout. and knowing he had such a long stretch of time, it’s honeslty something amazing for him. he is serving his country!
