I don't like how it would also change trading a lot too. A rd 4 pick instead of a 7th round in a trade is a world of difference when you are trying to throw in something extra
I like it. Look at all the drafts in the past and you rarely get over 120 NHL players on any given year.
This is a great idea. The NHL draft should be 2 rounds like the NBA draft . 50% of the first round picks don’t play 80 games in the NHL the 2nd round drops down to like 10%. The NFL draft and the MLB draft are the only drafts that need more than 2 rounds.
This would affect trades more than anything else. Besides, teams don't just draft for the NHL, but the AHL also.
They are better off adding 6 roster spots for an additional line and a third goalie. It would be fun to see how that factor plays out in NHL games.
I would be for reducing the number of rounds, but not from 7 to 4 at once. I would remove one round per year to a total number of rounds of 5.
5 rounds makes a lot of sense
I don't trust Bettwoman. The only reason he wants to do it is so he can add a billion more teams to the league watering it down to nothing.
After the second round you can just tune out and do some research on the players yourself later. Teams look at who wasn't drafted like our good buddy Arbor Xhekaj
Maybe bad for the NHL team as they have less bargaining chips to trade a player with later round draft picks

I don't agree that the draft is too long and I like that teams have alot of picks to give more players chances while augmenting their odds of hitting a star or a roster player, but I understand how people could think 224 selections is alot.
HOWEVER, 4 rounds is insanely short. Hockey is nothing like the NBA where teams have like what, 10 players on the active roster? Hockey has 20 total, 12 F 6 D 2 G. Not only do we have more players on a team but we need to account for every position, some teams will go for best player available in the early rounds then go for the best of what they need in the deeper rounds like 4-7.
I could see getting rid of the 7th round because of expansion teams increasing the selection count, I could even see an argument for the 6th round. But theres no reason to touch the 5th round, at all.
A four round NHL draft is just perfect in my book! Anyone else who isn't drafted can be signed anytime like the NFL.
I don’t like it at all. It’ll be an advantage for the big market, high profile teams. The undrafted free agents will choose the Rangers, Kings, Golden Knights, etc. It’s hard enough for the likes of Winnipeg, Columbus, and Buffalo to compete with the big markets.
Joe Pavelski who was in the playoffs 17 seasons was drafted at 205.
Just get rid of the draft all together, it's an anachronism.

i believe its a great idea. players not picked are free agents. Also the value of picks will increase I believe. a 3 or 4th rd pick may become worth more.

I'm pretty split on this one. Lots of pros and cons that I can think of. Also, I should mention that though the video says it came from 9 rounds down to 7, for many years the draft was actually 12 rounds. Imagine if they still did that with 32 teams now! 😂
All the General Managers will disagree on this and they won’t even attempt doing this!
Not sure I agree with cutting it to 4. 5 makes more sense IMO, and if either side felt strongly enough at the CBA bargaining table, a case could MAYBE (and that's a big maybe for me) be made for round 6. The 7th round is basically useless though. Considering the number of players that actually see NHL ice from those rounds, round 7 is as good as gone.
Sometimes you get Hall of Famers in the late rounds. Luck Luc for the Kings and Tom Brady for the Patriots come to mind. The big issue for the NHL is they don't just have one team to fill. They have 3 teams, and they are often very acomedating to prospects who want to stay in college or on a foreign team another tear or two. I would expect a greater number of washed players in the minors and fewer prospects electing to join the draft since they aren't ready and teams won't want to wait on them.
Four rounds is fine. It would put pressure on teams to develop a strong scouting program with an emphasis on players not likely to be picked in the 4th round.
