My goal is to win the cup. Playoffs aren’t good enough for me. I understand we must get there first, but I tried to set my sights higher.

I am sure this is going to get some juicy hatemail, but it’s just a thought game for the off-season. Don’t take it too seriously. I don’t expect any of these moves, but I can see Adams building out the roster similarly.

Our bottom 6 were ugly; we know that. The first thing we do is look at the bottom six forwards in UFA to fill the roster. However, one idea that has yet to be talked about a lot is adding top 6 guys who can push some of our current top 6 to a top 9 role. Subsequently, we will be bolstering all of our lines at the same time.

I want guys who play with energy, and we need more of that. Play with intensity instead of going through the motions. Have each other’s backs. Bring a physical presence if possible, or you won’t be bullied.

I researched as much as I could about what experts and fans thought the going rate would be for players. And I wanted to sign guys because, despite our young talent, we should use all of our resources before trading them, and signing guys prevents you from making a trade.

Trade terms: Tkachuk for 11OA, Rosen, Joker, and Kisakov

I’ve been vocal about overvaluing trade targets and undervaluing our players simply because we have access. I wouldn’t say I like paying more than what we gave up to move Eichel, but the RFA market for guys on their second contract, who are the most tradeable, doesn’t fit our needs. So, we have to explore something bold.

    Transactions

    Action | Player | Term | Reason
    :-|:-|:-|:-|
Trade | Brady Tkachuk | current | Brings all of the above-mentioned. Perfect fit for what we need.
Sign | Teuvo Teräväinen | 3X6 | Many Canes fans don’t think he will command more than he already earns. If Guentzel leaves, this is an easy resign, but if he stays, the door might be open. He is best suited for a middle 6 role and would be a dream to have on your 3rd line.
Sign | Viktor Arvidsson | 1×3 | Coming off of back surgery, he is risky but could be a sneaky good find. Like Teuvo, he can play anywhere in your top 9.
Resign | JJ Peterka | 7×8 | We need to lock him up asap, the sky is the limit. Contract kicks in next year.
Buyout | Jeff Skinner | 2.2 against the cap this year, 4.4 next year | Just do it now and bite the bullet. You’re going to do it eventually, anyways. He’s pretty much a shoe-in for the ol’ Lindy Ruff doghouse.
Resign | UPL | 3X4 | Next year we can have an Ullmark/Swayman-type situation and then decide what to do next off-season.
Resign | Jacob Bryson | 1×1.2 | Looked decent at times. I’m fine with him as the 6th d-man since Johnson can take over at any point.
Resign | Peyton Krebs | 2×1.5 | I hate putting him on the 4th line, but he didn’t impress when he took over for Mitts and started to look good with Okposo. He will be the first man up when injury strikes
Resign | Brett Murray | 1x775k | Will be our 7th forward. No need to drain the pocket books for 4th liners when we have some on this roster.
Sign | Brandon Biro | 1x775k | Help the youngsters in Rochester develop
Sign | Vasili Glotov | 1x775k | Late bloomer? We finally bring him over to NA where he gets a shot to prove himself in the AHL.

How does this look for 2024-2025 and beyond, assuming the cap will go to 90? It will take some well-orchestrated magic. If we resign Peterka now, that leaves about 6m left with Greenway gone, Arvidsson, and both Byram and Quinn as RFAs.

You may have to move two of the guys you sign (Tuevo and Ullmark), or depending on where Tuch stands, he could be the guy. But at that point, Savoie and Kulich should both be ready to step in, and Krebs will hopefully show that he can handle a bigger role. That is where the next generation of youth takes the stage.

Definitely appreciate the work and ideation. One thing, some terms for FA signings seem unrealistic.

Arvidsson is projected to sign for around $5.6M x 4 years. As opposed to $3M x1.

Teravainen is projected to sign for around $7.4M x 7 years. As opposed to $6M x3. Also, he’s a winger not a C.

Also, there are some concerns about him: *”The individual offense isn’t there anymore and it showed last year with below-average scoring-chance contribution rates according to Sznajder’s tracking. That’s despite his most frequent linemate being Sebastian Aho every season, who has shown over the last two years he does better without Teravainen, especially offensively.”*

Who did we trade for Tkachuk? The guys on ATW said we’d have to send either a Quinn and/or Peterka plus 11 for that, and even then it wasn’t enough. Vanek said it if i recall

My man pulled off a Skinner-Tkachuk trade 1 for 1!!
