Kyle Okposo talks being one win away from Stanley Cup

all right thanks very much catching up with Kyle laoso here in the Edmonton ERS Hall of Fame room I mean we asked if you wanted to do it there and you’re like yeah it’s a cool room isn’t it you don’t get to see this often this is the first time I’ve gotten to see it too what do you think yeah I mean it’s pretty neat obviously uh so much history with uh with this team and organization and just the players that um you know came here before this current generation and you know after playing for the Islanders for a number of years and you know obviously the the history in the 80s between the Islanders and the Oilers and kind of the passing of the torch that that happened it’s just pretty neat to uh to see all the history I’m I’m a huge hockey nerd so um I enjoy looking at everything I’ve known you since you’ve been a rookie so I know that you love it here right in front of Wayne Gretzky some guy that isn’t too bad right have you have you thought about your your Islander days and and the connection with the Edmonton Oilers and how irony is maybe not the right word but how just fun that it is that that’s who you’re playing against in the Stanley Cup yeah it just kind of goes on the back of your mind uh every now and again but you know after last game uh not after game I can’t remember if it was game one or two but my son was down in the parking garage and and um you know Wayne happened to happened to come out and my son uh was just completely Star Struck and just said hello Mr grety and um he’s eight so that was just a pretty cool moment and um you know he’s just such an icon of the game and you know as for me personally I’m just like I said I’ve said before I’m happy to be here and and you know obviously it’s a great team that we’re playing and um you know we’re looking to have a good effort game four did um did game three feel different I mean on your visiting team you’re you’re in Edmonton did it have a different vibe to you at all or was it just kind of just a progression of game one and two that you guys had at home well it’s it was extremely loud and we knew that it was going to be coming in it honestly reminded me of you know game three in 2013 playoffs uh at the Nassau Coliseum you know that’s um you know that’s kind of the deciple level that I was hitting and and you know we we knew that the fans were going to be all jacked up for that game and you know as for us and how we play we don’t really change the way that we play Homer Road and you know we kind of play a a greasy game and and you know it was nice to to stick to our game the whole way and you know they obviously had some sustained pressure but I thought that we did a good job of capitalizing on our opportunities and limiting some of their chances and um you know it was just a just a fun road game for us yesterday before the game I had an interview with Gus for and I said the last question I said got ask you I’ve been wed to ask you this all the time I said you ever get tired like he never looks like he gets tired out there and he said dead pan seriously no he doesn’t so um he played almost 29 minutes again last night and the matchup game is important we can’t deny that right he’s the guy along with eblad that’s going to see the most ice time against the top guys right there but when you watch what he does out there you’ve seen them all you’ve played with some great guys what do you think about his performance well I mean I don’t think you can say enough about him and and what he’s done in this postseason you know we we joke that he’s carved out of stone he might be uh a descendant of one of the big three you know Zeus Zeus Hades are Poseidon like he’s honestly he’s just a phenomenal he’s in phenomenal shape he’s a phenomenal skater phenomenal Defender and um you know his performance last night was was second to none and you know you could go up and down the list of guys but he’s such an important piece of our team and and the way that we defend the way that we play the way we close and um just a perfect example for how to play defense for any youngster who’s looking to play the game lastly do you wish today was tomorrow already are you ready to play again are you happy to have a day off in between three and four uh honestly I’m just I’m trying to soak the moment in and um I just want to you know today’s an off day so I’m going to try to have some fun and and be around the guys and um just relax a little bit and then when it’s time to play that game you know you get dialed in you get locked in and and you go out there and you try to win your shift and that’s that’s all that it is is is you have to keep your uh Focus small and that’s what we’re going to do tomorrow but today our focus is small on on the task at hand and that’s winning the off day you know what’s not fun talking to me we know is fun go have some fun thanks for joining us here bud thanks bu

  1. Very happy for Okposo. To think he started the season in Buffalo, hadn't played a playoff game in eight years, and is now one win away from getting his name engraved on Cup.

    Life takes amazing turns.

He's earned his ice time, too, as neither Lomberg nor Cousins has dressed in the Final.
