  1. I think our quality-over-quantity shooting style would have actually done well for us had we played Florida in a series.

We saw it with Saros in the first round, and we’re seeing it a bit with Bobrovsky in the Final – they thrive when they’re in a rhythm. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Bobrovsky allowed the first shot to go in in Game 2, after he’d been sitting there for over 11 minutes with no action. The Oilers’ highest-scoring period in Game 3 also came when they had 2 goals on 6 shots in the 3rd period. We also beat Florida both times in the regular season, so there’s reason to believe that our style matches up well against them.

That’s not to say they can’t be better at generating quality chances and being better at having the puck, but I think other factors like team depth and defensive systems are contributing to Florida’s success way more

I kinda hate when people talk about shot volume like just tossing the puck on net. No one who talks about shot volume thinks thats the way to improve shot volume. However, at the same time they did generate goals and extended pressure off some unconventional low danger shots so they do have their place too.

The bigger thing was they seemed uninterested in a lot of the medium quality shots and would revert back to the system and try to reset things since it wasn’t a high danger shot. And it wasn’t just grinders doing that, but the guys you would want goals from would do it too.

That’s where I think the change would need to be. There’s one example that is burned into my brain from game 4 in the second period where Suter got a pass from Miller, he’s right on the faceoff dot with a good shooting lane and a defensive lapse from the Oilers, and Boeser is kinda off the net far side. And Suter looks up to shoot but then turns the puck to the corner and they lose the puck on the ensuing cycle.

Having the guys shoot on those is where you could make up a lot of this difference to me.

Part of that might be because the team was relying on a lot of non-shooters for goals (Hoglander, Suter, Mikheyev, Dak, Lafferty, etc), but I think you’re always best off taking your shot and seeing what happens on those. Especially when every shift matters so much more in the playoffs and you’re only playing good teams.

For the rush it’s a bit trickier since they clogged low so well and doing that they gave up a lot of ability to create fast breaks. Finding the balance where you can still clog inside but release to stretch things out is a lot harder, especially when this team doesn’t have many high end skaters.

fla has a great pk and pp as well, and they are probably the best team without the puck in any zone I have seen.

When I read this, I just think more about how ideal of a fit Jake Guentzel would be on this team, and to a lesser extent Jason Zucker.

Going into next season, I’d love to see something like:
    – Zucker Miller Boeser
    – Guentzel EP40 (Insert RW)

Personally I was still stressed as hell watching the Canucks fail to get shots off in game six and seven I don’t care what anyone says

  7. Van_3000

Our shot quality was quite poor in the last two games. They have to find a way to get more chances down low. I agree defensively we’re sound but there will be some significant roster turnover so who really knows.

Tocchet doesn’t like extra shots just for the sake of it. He said so multiple times.

  9. crazych1mp

Shots sure but just about everything else too. We need guys playing Barkov style defence when away from the puck. Florida also is a team that doesn’t lose much on the face offs and they have d men jumping in at the right times.

Florida knows how to shut down Edmonton’s most lethal weapon, their PP.

If there’s a team we should try to replicate, it’s definitely them. Depth up front with a Selke winner (Petey isn’t and probably won’t reach that level, but he’s still great defensively, and Miller was great this season too). The defence Florida has vs what we tend to want is interesting, though. They don’t have that big, lumbering back end, and they kinda just developed their guys from outta nowhere. Montour, Forsling, Ekblad, OEL, they can all move the puck up the ice. Make crisp passes. Got some nastiness too with Ekblad, Kulikov, Mikkola.

Forsling is a monster at what he does, and Quinn is obviously more valuable but we don’t have anyone that brings what Forsling does. He’ll shut down your top guy and also chip in immensely offensively. Plus he only makes 5.2!!! We need someone like that. a 2-way d-man in every sense of the term.

  12. It may be cliche but good things happen when you put pucks on net. If your system isn’t generating shots, there’s an issue. You can spin it anyway you want.

I can’t with the “what ifs” 😢 I only have faith in JR and PA until next season

  14. Stinky_Toes12

Having a lot of shots is pointless if all of the shots are right at the goalie, floridas been outshot 2/3 games and theyve won all 3. This series is proof that quality shots matter more
