CanucksArmy writer makes a case for Laine

I’ll admit I was pretty ‘meh’ on the idea, but this article actually has me encouraged – if this is a budget alternative to Necas or Guentzel on a shorter timeframe and for less assets in trade, sign me up!

Yuck, don’t like the allocation of funds to a proven non team player.

    There’s better ways

Laine’s work ethic and motivation worries me a tad. Is he a team player? Will his aura negatively impact our dressing room? Is it worth risking that to grab him for our team? Idk…I’m leaning towards no.

Yeah I don’t feel like reading all that but I feel like there’s a deal in there that could be around Hronek rights, Mikheyev no retention, picks/prospects for Laine retained 10-20%

Then Columbus retains 50% of Mik and flip to somebody who isn’t on his NTC list

Laine feels like a player you circle back on post-free agency. There’s no point taking on the risk of Laine at near 9M if you can sign Guentzel for just a little bit more.

Blue Jackets won’t retain on Laine without us giving up some real assets in return, at which point you have to wonder if it’s better to just sign a guy like Debrusk or Toffoli with a lower ceiling but much safer floor (without giving up anything in return).

But if in free agency the prices aren’t right or nobody else seems like a good fit, then he makes a lot of sense for a bold swing to buy low on

  6. A few days ago Drance listed some big red flags in regards to Laine.

Chief among them is that Laine does 1 thing really well, Score on the Powerplay from exactly where Miller scores goals.

    Secondly, he doesn’t “Drive Play”

I have no doubt he’d be good here but I’m not sure if he’s what we need. We need guys who can drive play in playoffs.

But if it’s cheap…. who knows.

  7. Honestly it’s tempting to get Laine to play with Petey. Maybe he’s the type of winger that Peter can pass the puck to and score every time. I’m just afraid he’ll bring the Fortnite addiction with him and bring down the whole team.

Are we still doing the “no fortnite” thing?

I don’t need to read the article to make a case for it. Laine is a once 44 goal scorer, twice 30 or more goal scorer who is 26 and has yet to play for a franchise that set him up to succeed. Allegedly constant friction with Jets leadership (Wheeler and Scheiffle) who destroyed the kids confidence. Then the fortune of going to Columbus under a coach who is famously really hard on players. Can’t have been good to build that confidence. Who cares about Brad Larsen, then the Babcock fiasco, then a coach who tries to make a career winger play centre and very publicly healthy scratches him for not playing the position very well.

Put the fuckin kid of Petey’s wing and feed him pucks.

  10. I would stay far away from Necas or Guentzel. Laine seams more similar to Boeser situation and there’s possibility of elite Potential

Why so he can get injured in game 1 round 1? I’ll pass.
