What the Nashville Predators Can Learn from the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers in the Final

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers and Matthew Tkachuk and the Florida Panthers are fighting for the Stanley Cup, and there are several important lessons the Nashville Predators can takeaway from this series. On today’s Locked On Predators we talk about what helps a team make that deep Cup run and take a realistic look at where the Predators are in the process. How important is goaltending in the postseason, and how could Barry Trotz’s decision about Juuse Saros impact Nashville’s trajectory to a Cup? Where in the lineup are the Predators most needing a boost? We also talk about timing and when Nashville may want to sign a “big fish” to help the team make a deeper playoff run in the future.

  1. When Florida signed Bobrovsky, they had Barkov(24), Huberdeau(26), and Ekblad(23) on their roster to build around. Although Stephenson is a solid middle 6 forward, he is not a 1C like Barkov is. Not even close. In "6 years", Forsberg will be out of his prime, and Josi will be out of the league. I doubt/hope management won't be that complacent. That "6-7 year window" would waste Josi and Forsberg's time/prime. And they could have done a legit rebuild like SJ, ANH, and CHI. All teams who will likely have rosters that can, or are close to contending by then.

  2. I would not be surprised if Nashville slipped out of playoff contention this year. It's not likely O'reilly and Nyquist will be able to perform at last year's level at their age. Roman Josi is also due to start his inevitable decline. The biggest reason is that this was the year Tomasino, Glass, Parssinen, Afanasyev and Evangelista were supposed to become regular contributors and it did not happen for 4 of those 5. McDonough will need to be replaced, and it remains to be seen who will be the starting and backup goaltenders. Some of the aforementioned youngsters may be trade bait, and there are others – L'Heureux, Svechkov, Kemell, and Stastney on defence who may join the Preds and get their feet wet. But there are too many questions to have big expectations. Trotz may also dip into the free agent market, but it's still a rag-tag roster of ageing veterans and inexperienced youth. Last year, they overachieved. Will that happen again? Unless Evangelista and others blossom, it's going to be difficult.
