Ryan Warsofsky had a front-row seat to some of the worst hockey played by the San Jose Sharks since their expansion days as an assistant under David Quinn the past two seasons.
Now the 36-year-old who was hired last week as the youngest coach in the NHL will be tasked with overseeing a youth movement led by projected No. 1 overall draft pick Macklin Celebrini that Sharks general manager Mike Grier hopes can get the franchise back into contention.
“We just went through two really tough years. I know what they need,” Warsofsky said at his introductory news conference Monday. “They’re beat up a little bit. We need some new light. We need some energy. We need some positivity. Now we have some hope with the prospects that are coming. This is a really exciting chapter in this franchise with the prospects that Mike’s brought in and drafted and we’re starting to develop and now with this draft coming up. So exciting times are definitely ahead.”

When Coach Warsofsky became emotional during this press conference, I can tell how much hockey and his players mean to him. Treating players like brothers is huge and caring about their life outside of hockey… I NEVER hear that from coaches. Lets go Coach Warsofsky and Sharks!
🦈🦈🦈
Keep it up Brodie love watching ur content
Love seeing that emotion from Coach. We need that.
Im a Montrealer who just became a Sharks fan…you're lucky to have a such a coach and person!!!
“Did I say Macklin?” LOL.
Ok… He got me to "buy in". He's got the passion, he has the resume, he see the personal/phycological aspect of these young players. You don't "break" this new generation of younger people… You get them to buy into your vision with the personalization "warso" talked about.
2023/24 was watching it all burn down to ash.
2024/25 is about pouring the foundation and putting up some pillars.
David Quinn was the cerebral Professor of hockey, and Ryan Warsofsky is his emotional opposite, more like a firecreacker coach who will catalyze player effort better. NHL coaching is a team effort and takes a large committee with distributed duties and head coachers get scapegoated too much in NHL as a cheap way to shock teams into action. A new coach means players get new chance to prove themselves worthy of more or less ice time. Coach's main role is picking lineup and players to play more or less, so as ice time gatekeeper, the coach becomes emotional lightning rod for players who struggle to get his attention and respect. Warsofsky shoulkd watch his own video interview carefully to see how he can improve in holding back emotions for head coach role. The 2024-25 Sharks will be a very different lineup and Warsofsky will have to find a way to get more out of Mike Grier's prospect pool. I hope that Mike Grier uses less struggling players on their second or third chances to make it in the NHL, or more consistency in the whole group rather than a majority of players on the borderline of AHL demotion or sticking to NHL bottom six roles. What kind of contract length and salary did Warsofsky get and did Sharks report these facts or keep private? Probably Warsofsky was much cheaper than coaches with more experience and name recognition in NHL. I was half hoping Grier hired Mike Babcock for a come-back and then tanked for a second season in a row due to Babcock mind-games with players confidence and snooping on their phones for porn he might like. Imagine if Sharks could get another #1 overall pick to go with 2024 pick. A killer coach is the answer but Babcock may be enjoying his retirement and money he gets even when fired from job as an NHL coach.
Brodie I love your insights and thoughts
Had Drew been hired as HC I would have been cool with it.
DUDE LETS FUCKING GO.
I am excited for The Sharks as a whole. Ryan Warsofsky is genuine and has some great people who have mentored him. Mike Grier is doing all of the right things. I wish Mike Grier would elaborate a little more whenever he speaks but he is a quiet guy. We are okay.
Something tells me we got a heckuva coach ready for this turnaround. Only time will tell but given with the prospects we have, will have, better cap space, and a freakin coach that loves hockey and willing to do what it takes to get things right….. you have to be excited. Lets remember nothing was ever given to him. Hes earned the promotions and hes earned his shot at this. Lets go coach Warso!!!
@15:57 I agree that an identity is needed. Ultimately, I believe this is a big reason why Quinn was let go. Not just that we didn't have an identity, it's that we weren't hard to play against. Grier alluded to as much in his interview with I believe it was Sheng in March. He said "we need to be harder to play against". While our lack of wins last season wasn't at all surprising, the lack of effort or the lack of difficulty other teams has playing against us is the primary reason why Quinn was let go, and why Warsofsky was chosen as the guy to follow Quinn.
