Track and Field Kicks Off Outdoor Season on Saturday at Islanders Open

CORPUS CHRISTI — The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men’s and women’s track and field teams kick off their outdoor season at the Islanders Open on Saturday at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium.

The meet begins at 8:30 a.m. with the 3000-Meter Run. The field events begin at 11 a.m. with the men’s and women’s Hammer Throw.

The Islanders Open is the first-ever collegiate meet at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track Stadium.

Last Time Out
The Broncs closed out their indoor season at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

Graduate student Martin Casse won the One-Mile run with a time of 4:17.80. His first place finish earned him All-WAC First team honors. Casse then finished in second place in the 800-Meter Run after posting a time of 1:52.27, which gave him his second All-WAC First team honors.

Senior Dijan Johnson set another school record in the 200-Meter Dash with a time of 21.71 seconds, which allowed him to finish in fourth place. He earned All-WAC Second team honors.

Junior Jasmine Davison also earned All-WAC First team after finishing in third place in the women’s weight throw with a distance 17.59 meters. Senior Erika Anderson finished in fourth place in the weight throw with a throw of 16.78 meters, which earned her All-WAC Second team honors.

Mercedes High School alum Deandra Barroso earned All-WAC First team honors after finishing in third place in the women’s long jump with a distance of 5.55 meters.

Mission High School alum Jesus Alvarez finished in third place in the men’s shot put with a distance of 15.15 meters while Barclay Scott Bann finished in fifth with a toss of 14.61 meters. Alvarez earned All-WAC First team honors while Bann earned All-WAC Second team.

The Broncs broke a pair of program records in the men’s and women’s 4×400-Meter Relay. The men’s team of Edgar Moreno, Ramon Neilly, Carlos Cano and Bryan MacDonald set a new mark after they turned in a time of 3:18.33 to finish in fifth place. The women’s team of Alysse Crowther, Stephanie Vazquez, Carolina Hinojosa and Geneva Anderson also finished in fifth place after setting a new record of 3:51.44.

Who Else?
Besides UTPA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the competition includes Incarnate Word, Texas A&M-Kingsville, UTSA, Texas Southern and Trinity.

Next Up
The Broncs are back in action on March 22 when they travel to Kingsville for the IBC Bank Cactus Cup.
