Nice to see even if it’s not in Toronto

IMO he’s not worse seventh defenceman in the league if he wanted to come back and is fine playing in that role.

  2. GWsublime

Sure, on a league min deal with the understanding that he’ll need to be load-managed if we have space, why not?

  3. chouindog

Nope. He was a great leader but he’s too old and slow to make significant contributions now. As a coach sure as a player no.

I like Gio but I’d rather see the spot go to a young guy. If he’s completely comfortable being sent down to the AHL and possibly being claimed on waivers then give him a shot in camp with the understanding that if Webber or Topi or someone else outplays or even equals his play then he’s going to be below them in the pecking order.

League min, 7-8th D man. Get 30 or so games out of him and have his veteran presence. Sub in when guys are hurt. Easy yes.

He’s still pretty solid numbers wise tbh he’s just not an everyday guy. I wonder if he’d be willing to split time in the AHL to stay in Toronto

I mean I guess? If he understands he will be sitting a lot on a league minimum contract. We already have several 7th/8th D between the likes of Timmins, Rifai & Lajoie. These aren’t hard players to get so it isn’t a priority of any kind.

A D-Core of **Rielly, McCabe, Benoit, Lilly & Webber** is already weak AF. They already need to knock everyone down the pecking order.

Wow. Guy needs to hang em up. If we sign him and he plays anything beyond a 7/8D role we’re cooked

In a coaching/mentorship role, sure. But his days of being a regular on the blue line are gone. That body has way too many miles on it.

  10. I think im in the minority that thinks he wasnt bad this year

  11. clapperssailing

He can easily play on any team not playoff bound. So 16 teams can fight for him. He serves no purpose here.

  12. TheGapInTysonsTeeth

Of course. Just re-sign everyone and lets run out the exact same squad we had last year. Get Murray and Klingberg back on the payroll as well.

  13. I’m sure NHL is implicated but having Gio in the AHL would be perfect.

  14. Yorbayuul81

He looks a lot younger than he did at the end of the season

  15. idislikeian

Nope – gotta mix things up if you want different results. Give Topi a chance.

  16. trinier101

He’s worth worth a lot for his experience and he was one of our toughest players out there. I would resign him eventually. I’d love to see him behind a leaf’s bench

  17. Cool that he still wants to play, but it won’t be at the NHL level. Aging curves are what they are. 40 is about as far as you can go in the best league in the world. If he wants to play on the Marlies as a mentor, then sure, but even then he’s taking the spot of a younger guy. Maybe coaching?

  18. mattfromjoisey

On the Marlies, sure. Love Gio but time to let the young guys take over.

He wasn’t the worst d-man on the team last year, but at 41 (or whatever) his playing time needs to be limited. Paying him a league-minimum salary to play half the season is the same as paying twice the minimum. He seems like a great guy, but cap-wise it’s not a good use of the money. I’d love to see him on the coaching staff, though.

  20. Actual_Cobbler_6334

I’d rather have him at league minimum over Klingberg, lol.

I imagine that the Leafs would bring him back, if he wants to come back. If he signs somewhere else that tells me he wanted a change of scenery.
