“Smith outdid Wayne Gretzky in his final season of junior hockey with Ottawa, winning the Ontario Hockey Association scoring title in 1977-78 with 192 points (69 goals, 123 assists), 10 more than Gretzky. The Minnesota North Stars selected Smith with the No. 1 pick of the 1978 NHL Draft.

The 6-foot-4 center from North Sidney, Nova Scotia, won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in 1978-79, scoring 30 goals and finishing with 74 points. Two years later, he finished with 93 points, including 64 assists, helping the North Stars advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time. Smith finished with 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists) in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games, although the North Stars lost the Final to the New York Islanders in five games.

Smith had a career season in 1981-82; he finished with career highs in goals (43), assists (71) and points (114). The North Stars traded him to the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 28, 1983 and he played a key role in Montreal’s run to the Stanley Cup in 1986, scoring 31 goals and finishing with 86 points during the regular season, then scoring seven goals in 20 playoff games. He had his last 30-goal season in 1988-89, scoring 32 times and helping the Canadiens reach the Cup Final for a rematch of their 1986 series against the Calgary Flames. Smith scored 11 goals in 21 playoff games, but the Canadiens lost to the Flames in six games.

The Canadiens traded Smith back to the North Stars on Aug. 7, 1990, and he made his fourth trip to the Stanley Cup Final the following spring, finishing with 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in 23 games. The North Stars lost the Cup Final to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Smith played two more seasons with the North Stars before retiring in 1993 with 1,036 points (357 goals, 679 assists) in 1,077 NHL games, as well as 160 points (64 goals, 96 assists) in 184 playoff games.

After retiring, Smith was general manager of the Phoenix Coyotes from 1996-2001, and later owned the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.”
