Mark Madden: It’s time for the Penguins to trade Tristan Jarry

I know Madden gets a lot of deserved hate, but you can't argue that he doesn't have his finger on the pulse of this team. I feel like he would only put this article out if he had some information that Jarry is going to be moved

There’s nothing in this article that makes me think Mark Madden ACTUALLY KNOWS something is gonna happen.. more so just an argument that Jarry SHOULD be traded (which I agree with btw)

  2. evil_iceburgh

Problem with trading him is someone needs to want him and his contract. He’s streaky where he’s lights out for a month and then kind of average for the next. He also has no positive playoff history.

Counterpoint: You would be trading Jarry for nothing. His stock is not exactly high throughout the league right now, and I would be surprised if the market was clamoring for his services.

On that note, Ned is not a starter and is injured as often as Tristan Jarry. I think the smart plan is sticking with the duo and hoping Jarry figures it out to bolster his trade value. We already have our next starter coming up through the pipes in Blomqvist who will continue to start in WBS and Joel is fresh enough that rolling with Blomqvist and Ned as a duo wouldn’t be smart at all.

Those that have said they don’t see Jarry being moved have said so because the idea is that Dubas doesn’t want to bring Blomqvist up as of yet. While this is fair, what if instead the team moves out Jarry and brings in another 1B type of goalie like Laurent Brossoit or Anthony Stolarz to backup Ned? Jarrys numbers just aren’t good enough when it actually matters, but his early numbers and shutout stats means he likely commands a greater return than Markstrom.

The Flames acquired a first and a young bottom pairing D-man with #5-6D potential for him. What if you move out Jarry for a similar ish return? You can use half of the cap savings to bring in that other goalie, and the other half to shore up the depth on either forward or defence.

It may not be the greatest idea, but it could certainly workout, especially with the way Ned played down the stretch. That extra cap flexibility could be the difference between being able to pickup a premium 3rd line winger or bottom pairing D-man.

I’m loathe to agree with him but the premise is right. Their tandem is pricey for two dudes that simply aren’t legit starters for a team that has any real aspirations. Ned is good journeymen backup and I’m ultimately fine with him. Jarry, at his cap hit, is simply negative value. He underperforms his expected goals against, a stat that is agnostic of team performance. He also just isn’t that dude come playoff time with a 2-6 record and .891 career save percentage. Couple that with the injuries and you have a guy that is just simply unreliable.

I dunno a Jarry trade around the draft next week wouldn’t shock me

How about less “we *NEED* to trade Tristan Jarry” and more “how the fuck are we this close to the draft and Reilly Smith is *STILL* on this fucking team???”

Penguins fans can kick and cry all they want about Jarry’s second half to the season but what about the first half where our goalie tandem was dominant and we left countless points behind because we had guys like Smith and Rakell sleepwalking in our top 6? I understand Rakell’s contract is harder to move but there’s 0 excuse to have Smith on this team come training camp. I’m genuinely more concerned about running it back with our top 6, other than the addition of Bunting, than I am with Jarry and Ned.

Wow Madden saying something we were all saying six months ago yeah tons of credit to him.

  9. MouthofthePenguin

I’ve been saying since February – look for him to be moved at the draft.

  10. DaveyMuldowney

I wish we could trade Mark Madden to a different fanbase.

  11. OlliMaattaIsA2xChamp

The super genius basically comimg in with the, “Why don’t the penguins just trade their bad players for other team’s good players”, argument.

  12. JimmyPineapple_

I tend to normally agree with Mark’s hockey opinions, but not this. Let’s say the Pens trade Jarry and bring up Blomqvist. Suddenly, your goalie tandem is a rookie goalie and a goalie who has made 40+ starts one time in his career. That’s a lot of risk. What if Blomqvist is terrible? It only makes sense to trade Jarry if Dubas wants to replace him with another experienced vet.

  13. JDerrick29

Mark Madden has been trying to trade Geno since like 2012. This man thinks the team’s pulse is up his own asshole

  14. Steaknkidney45

Madden and Rob Rossi, kings of Pittsburgh Penguins clickbait. (Though I completely believe Dubas will retool this roster)

  15. RetroJake

THE SUPER GENIUS. CHICKS WITH BIG TITS. CHEESEBURGERS. SHENDEROVICH SHENDEROVICH AND FISHMAN.

  16. Loki_DeVille

For what? What are you getting in return? Madden is the worse, he isn’t a journalist, just a carny playing journalist.

Honestly, what goalie can you get to replace him that is better? Ullmarks not coming, Boston wants to shed his contract, why would they take on Jarrys? Who else you got that can play? The draft sucks for goalies this year, big time. Take a chance, might get lucky, but, won’t find out for years. Who can you get this coming season to play as good or better as jarry?

  17. 614PensFan

I can absolutely argue that this hot-take clown does not have a pulse on the team. You must not remember him clamoring for the Pens looking to trade Malkin in 2015, only for Geno to stay and win back-to-back Cups the following two seasons.

This guy makes a living off of clickbait and headlines, the shit flying out of his mouth on a weekly basis has zero correlation with any impending moves the front office is considering.

  18. thekitchenaides

Fuck Mark Madden. Dude is a legitimate verified asshole.

  19. jaavuori24

here is a quick calibration test you should apply to anyone writing about the penguins : did they suggest trading Malkin before we won back to back cups?

if the answer is yes, put their words in the trash or recycling if your neighborhood participates.

  20. BombSquad570

The “armchair GM” in me agrees with the “trade him now” take in order to free up that cap space to use on July 1. But at this point it seems they’d be trading him for pennies, if not actually giving up assets to get someone to take his contract. So maybe an in-season trade makes more sense. We know he’s capable of producing stretches of really great goaltending, just never capable of sustaining them long term. If one of those hot streaks could coincide with another team having goaltending turmoil, that could be an out to recoup something of value for him and they can recall Blomqvist from WBS at any point without penalty.

For what, a bag of Chili Cheese Frito’s?

  22. StonedImaculate420

Tristan Jarry for Brady Tkachuk, 1 for 1

  23. Personally I would have begged MAF to come back one more year and help Blomqvist. I have no faith in this team making the playoffs next year.

  24. HoldMyBrew_

Penguins gotta start taking risks. All these disgruntled players should be an option. Rutherford always took the buy low players. A good offer should’ve been made to markstrom. I’d feel better about Markstrom maybe being good over another hot start into infinite sadness from Jarry.

  25. DanielMatosMD

Mark Madden is actually late on this. Jarry should have been traded last season.

  26. StaticNegative

LOL if you trade Jarry you had better have another real starting goaltender(there aren’t any available). If you trade Jarry forwhatever goofy ass reason you might as well start the rebuild in full.

  27. Darkdart19

While I think Jarry is fine and better than the sub would let you believe. . .now that Mark Madden is saying it i’m all in on Jarry.

  28. Hatemail375

I’d be fine if Mark just retired and STFU.

  29. pipertheredredworm

Trading Jarry would be as big a mistake as re-signing Ned was.

Ned cannot be a starter if we Trade Jarry, and I think it would be a mistake to throw Blomqvist to the wolves. Unless they already have a trade in line for Ned, i feel like resigning him was a big mistake. So now we are in a position where if we DO trade Jarry we cant get value in positional players for him because we’re most likely gonna need a goalie in return unless we are thowing in the towel completely this season. Seems like the smarter move would’ve been either not re-signing Ned and riding with Blomqvist as the backup this season, or trying to trade Ned vs Jarry. Not as much value, but he is a backup coming off damn near close to his best season where he had good workload and put up good numbers.
