  1. The only thing that makes sense about drafting a left D is it makes Guhle/Hutson moveable and those are some of your most valuable players. You can’t get a high end forward when trading them.

  2. Hughes has earned my trust to make the correct choice. I was very skeptical when he was 1st hired and proved me wrong when drafting slafkovsky and and last year when they went with David Reinbacher (once I understood the shortage of good right side defenseman)

  3. What if hugues offers matheson ++ to Ottawa for their pick and pick 2 of lindstrom demidov buium dickinson or silayev…Utah also needs D… and we have A LOT

  4. Sounds like the John Elway syndrome. Makes American players look like prima donnas. Should make him sit out in that case.

  5. If Demidov and Lindstrom are gone, I’d take Buium. Habs don’t have any number 1 Ds in their system. Buium projects as that.

  6. I can see Hughes making a move with Farrell, Harris and the 26th pick to move up in the draft, package that with Savard to get McGroarty. I love Farrell but there’s only so many spots. Imagine 1st line Slaf-Suzuki-Caufield 2nd line Dach-Lindstrom/Iginla-McGroarty and 3rd line – Newhook – Beck – Roy/Mesar

  7. I've read Arpon Basu's article and I'd still pass on Buium even if Demidov and Lindstrom are gone. Hutson is close enough to what Buium can do that we don't need him nor do we need the additional headache of even more trades and being at the mercy of the trade market. Playmaking is all for naught if our top 6 forwards can't capitalize on what they're being given. If Joshua Roy doesn't become a top 6 forward, which would be extremely rare for a 5th round pick to become, then our top 6 forwards are rounded out by either Josh Anderson or Brendan Gallagher. That should terrify people. You can't just trade for anyone only who's available so that terrifying situation is something we could be stuck with for years if we don't draft a forward. If a defenseman is going to be the choice then I'd want to see the trade done to get the top 6 forward we need first even then I'd still prefer Yakemchuk because he's right handed and big. I think there's a world of difference between can play a position and should play a position. A left handed defenseman can play on the right side but they shouldn't.

  8. The important thing to keep in mind here is that we're not competing yet and won't be for at least another 2 years. Getting a forward just for the sake of it is a major mistake, and if no forward that suits us is available, not taking a high-quality defence man would border on the criminal.
