Mikhail Sergachev Uncalled Cross-Check Into the Boards on Nathan Gerbe (Apr. 25, 2021)

  1. This was such utter bs — the REF (37) was RIGHT THERE. The Blue Jackets didn’t lose that game— the officials served it up to the Bolts. If the NHL doesn’t do something about the corrupt officiating, the sport won’t survive. Tim Peel was just the tip of the iceberg.

  2. And what really sucks Nathan couldn't fight back, which is something he always does cause it was so hard, even if he did fight we would still be getting screwed over cause Nathan most likely would've gotten a fighting penalty

  3. Certainly not a cross checking penalty. Lemme go into detail.

The only possible penalty in that situation was boarding, because he was pushed into the boards like a typical boarding. However, we must look at this with the understanding that our perspective is different than the Refs. This plays a huge role in whether its a penalty or not.

My assumption is that the ref determined that this type of play was in the midst of "boardplay" in which all infractions like cross-checking and tripping get voided, and that's why Sergachev didn't get a penalty.

Do I believe from this POV that it was deserving of a boarding penalty? Yes, but I know refs dont have live-access to these types of cameras to see the space between Gerbe and the boards, and his angle doesnt help him see the difference either (Gerbe's back was to the ref, puck in front of Gerbe, Gerbe looking down all hinder the ref's ability to see the spacing between him and the boards, thus being unable to accurately determine distance).

All in all, yes it was a missed call, but we cannot blame the refs here or assume that the Refs have some bias against the Blue Jackets. The evidence is actually quite the contrary, CBJ is the least penalized team in the NHL.
