I am expecting a defensive 3d line center. I WANT TO BE SURPRISED!

Really been loving Beck’s development. When he was drafted I was pretty excited to be getting a seemingly sure contributor in the bottom 6. But now he’s looking like a dream at 3C and even a potential solution at 2C if Dach doesn’t pan out.
To me Beck is a good example of why you don’t always swing for upside with a pick. Grab the guy you’re most certain will play in the NHL and hope he surprises you with another gear down the road.

I love his game. If he has a 50 point ceiling i don’t care. He’s going to make the other teams best players struggle. Guy Carbonneau 2.0

He definitely has skills, but he’s always been projected as a third-line player, and his production in junior this year certainly reinforces that view. Of course his coach is gonna pump his tires, he loves the guy.
If he does become a really good third line centre who can win faceoffs and run a PK that’s such a big win for us. Anything more would be an unexpected bonus.

I see Beck as a sort of Ryan O’Reilly. He has the motor, skills and IQ to produce at a higher rate than your typical 2-way 3rd C, but the lack of pure creativity or superior skills will cap his ability to generate offense out of nothing.
So you could put him between two high-offense wingers and he’ll do the job as a 2nd C — maybe even a 1st C if you run into injury issues. Or you could have him as a luxury 3rd C that completely eats any line he’s facing and tilts the game for his team in a major way.
