Calgary Flames Trade Jacob Markstrom To New Jersey Devils | Flames Are Rebuilding Not Retooling

After months of rumours and speculation with the Calgary Flames and goaltender Jacob Markstrom. The Calgary Flames have finally traded away their starting goaltender to the New Jersey Devils but not for the trade that’s been rumoured and reported on in the media. There’s also been some gossip on if Jacob Markstrom actually did get asked to waive his no movement clause that’s in his contract at or near the NHL Trade Deadline to go to New Jersey.

However his body language at the end of the season and where the Calgary Flames are at this move needed to be made. This move also opens up the door for Dustin Wolf to become the starter with Dan Vladar as back-up assuming full recovery from his hip surgery. Also this trade to me says that the Calgary Flames are actually rebuilding and not retooling where the team keeps saying retool as supposed to rebuild which probably is to keep Murray Edwards of the brasses back.

To Calgary Flames:
2025 1st Round Draft Pick (Top 10 Protected)
D Kevin Bahl
Retain 31.25% Salary ($1.875M For Final Two Seasons Of Contract)

To New Jersey Devils:
G Jacob Markstrom

Calgary Flames trade Jacob Markstrom to satisfy his desire to go to a potential contender at this stage of his career and the Calgary Flames pick up a draft pick and young rugged defenseman in Kevin Bahl to change the defensive group.

Personally feel that the New Jersey Devils did well as they got their stud goaltender that the team was seeking without trading away an Alexander Holtz, Dawson Mercer or the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft where that was potential rumoured deals. Calgary Flames gets futures again as they’re actually rebuilding in my mind.

What do you think of the Jacob Markstrom trade for the Calgary Flames? Is this a good trade for both sides when considering everything? Better than potential rumours that the Ottawa Senators or Toronto Maple Leafs could offer?

Also touch upon at the end about the Calgary Flames moving on from Marc Savard on the coaching staff and hiring Brad Larsen who did spend some time with the Columbus Blue Jackets most recently.

  1. I know there is a Calgary, Toronto connection with GM, but i don't think Conroy will ever do business with Treliving, I don't think Conroy was happy with the contract situations Treliving left him, especially Huby contract! Top Shelf Hockey says Calgary lost the Markstrom trade, i disagree, to me getting a 1st round draft pick, plus a good D man was a good haul, plus it all really depends what kind of player Calgary gets with thst 1st round pick, who knows calgary could use that pick to move up in a future draft! Also, for whatever reason Markstrom is mediocre every other season! J think Calgary wins this trade, only time will tell though!
