What’s Next For The Boston Bruins? 2024 Off-Season Plan

in today’s video we’re jumping back to our NHL offseason plan Series today we look at the seventh ranked team from the regular season the Boston Bruins what should we expect from Boston this off season they’ve had a couple of really good including an historical regular season just two years back but they can’t get over the hump in the playoffs what does this team need to do to be more successful in the playoffs what should we expect we’ll discuss that coming up next so welcome back to another video here at topshelf hockey as I mentioned today we’re looking at the Boston Bruins and examining their offseason plan and what we should expect from them before we do that of course I’m just going to quickly explain the breakdown of these videos essentially how this works is we’re going to first take a look at their key team in individual stats from the 23 24 season take a look at any changes we went through during the year uh look at our cap space expiring contracts where do things stand with the uh the draft picks for the upcoming draft uh expiring deals and then what are the top moves and questions that we think they’re going to end up facing here this off season so let’s dive in and get started first up with the recapping their 23 24 campaign uh they again of course had another solid regular season 109 points uh record of 47 20 and 15 uh they had a first round match up again with the Toronto Maple after a lot of battles over the years they ran into them one more time and one again of course the Leafs and Bruins have put on some real entertaining Series in Boston always seems to come out on top of those but they did lose for the second straight year to the Florida Panthers who of course currently in a Stanley Cup Final as I record this video of course the Panthers went on and win that series four games of two looking at some key metrics here for the Bruins as a team they scored 263 goals which is 14th best and they gave up 221 which was fifth best clearly the backbone of this team is their the way to defend and especially between the pipes with Swingman and allmark uh go four though pretty good respectable but not you know usually to be a cup Contender you’re typically looking to be in the top five top 10 uh Power Play Again respectable around hover around League average 22.2% for 14th best the penalty kill again really good 82.5% for seventh best so Jim Montgomery for the second straight year had you know great goal tending really good defensive metrics offensively speaking they were uh like said they were good this year but they could be a little bit better if they’re going to be a Stanley Cup Contender but considering what the what they lost on the team and how different they look this year I think they certainly exceeded my expectations were kind of surprised just how strong they were looking individually their top performances include David past leading way with a really it’s a huge gap between him and the next highest score which is Brad marshan Pastor KN had 110 points Marian had 67 now Marian did miss some games of course start of the year with a shoulder recovery but uh the same time still a huge gap there Charlie Coyle was third with 60 points pav zaka 59 and Charlie McAvoy 47 so clearly at this point uh you know Coy and zanka stepped up big time to replace cree and berson they did a a really solid job but at the same time like they’re they’re not at that level like they they filled in and did a good job I just I think there is ways for the Bruins to upgrade that though so we’ll see what they do we’ll talk about that a little bit further here in a moment as far as inseason changes go uh they did make some additions at the trade deadline Adam some adding some some size and musel and Pat maroon and uh and Andrew Peak who came over from the Columbus Blue Jackets they only gave up a third and a sixth round pick to make that happen uh go tending this year again led the way the backbone of the team San had a record of 2510 and six a 2.53 goals against and a 916 save percentage and lenus allmark 221 and 7 with a 257 and a 915 save percentage so very comparable uh Swan did get the ball to run with it in the playoffs and was uh certainly needing a new contract which we’ll discuss here and appears to be taking the rains fulltime and all marks time in Boston likely coming to a close here uh looking at their salary cap space as we stand right now they have $21 million in space and they have 17 NHL contracts on the books right now uh of course your maximum roster is 23 so you’re looking at about you know four or five signings there uh looking at their expiring contracts um the big one restricted free agent Jeremy Swan likely looking at a seven-year deal maybe eight um but he’s looking at probably 7 8 million a year um he is going to be getting a massive raise and that’s going to be eating away at that cap situation for sure uh yesper Bas as well as as a restricted free agent on the UFA side You’ve Got Jake de brasque youve got Danton Heinen Pat maroon James Van reznik Jason Magna Derek forbert Matt grizzli and Kevin Shater a lot of dmen there a lot of those ufas won’t be back either like on the defensive side of things for sure pretty safe to say grizzli shaton k forber almost a given that none of them return uh he seemed interested in going back to Boston um I wouldn’t be shocked if they did talk to him about a one-year deal um you know maybe one year around a million or so that that might work um but I’m not sure what other options he’s going to have so I’d say maybe he returns uh de brasque is probably gone I mean I think they’ll try to keep him but uh there’s been so many times in the last two three years we thought debrusk was leaving and I think this time is going to be the time that it does happen we’ll see I think Danton heinan could easily have a a pretty easy contract to to figure out to stay um not honestly he’s a good fit there um so I think they they probably figure out a way to keep highing in maybe maroon depending on his options and that’s probably about it I think Swan and bfist probably get signed and that’s four four contracts right there now then then you’re looking outside of the team for any other additional moves uh the 2024 NHL drafts right now at least is going to be pretty uneventful from a picking standpoint for the Bruins they’ve only got three picks and they don’t have any picks in the first second or third rounds that very well could change uh obviously the draft is the time that we expect to see some activity and it could result in them maybe getting a a pick back to get into the first or second round as well the top questions facing this franchise this off season is going to be some big ones uh for one can they add to their Center depth that seems to be a major priority for Don Sweeney um said Co and zaka did a a pretty solid job considering what their expectations were and obviously the big shoes that they had to fill in for um but at the end of the day I think they can get stronger and if Charlie Coyle can be your your 3C and zaka can either be your two or play on the wing then I think overall they will be a much deeper stronger better team for it um there’s been a lot of consideration on the rumor mill that they are going to be very much in play for the services of Elias lolm who’s not expected to return in Vancouver after being traded there earlier this season before the trade dead line uh he’s likely looking at a contract somewhere north of $7 million per year in a long-term contract so again that’s going to be tricky for them to do with 21 million in space you know if they end up paying San seven or north of $7 million on a on a contract you know that knocks it down to about 14 you’ve got a few other signings there you could pay Lyn Holmes 7 7.5 something along those lines um I don’t know I think it might take more than that to be honest cuz I know there was talk to cans to keep them were maybe willing to go to 7times 7 and that wasn’t going to be enough according to Vancouver media so I don’t know but at the same time I wonder if it might not only be um just about money but the the fit where he fits on the roster too so we’ll see but their Center depth is certainly something they want to look at there was some talks when according to Elliot Freeman that when Pierre Luke duu was treated it to the capitals that the Bruins are rumored to be one of the teams that were in those conversations too and they almost made that trade so you know at the end of the day um that obviously would have been a big contract for a centerman coming back so clearly I think it’s fair to say that’s their focus um another option here like I mentioned before in another video was there’s been a lot of talk about the uh you know between Ottawa and Boston having some talks around Lena almark and of course there’s been a lot of talk about the flyers and the Senators having talks and I wondered Maybe if somehow Sean couturier could be in that mix on a three- team deal maybe could could he end up in Boston I don’t see them going for for couturier and for lin Holm but I mean that’s a lot of money between the two of them I don’t think they can afford both but at the same time like something Hass give I do expect them to make a play for one of them with Lin Holm being the more reasonable one to expect I think um but when it comes to the goalies I think the the goalie Tandem and the goalie hugs that we see between swayan and allmark I see I think we’ve seen our last one uh word is that allar is very much you know very likely to get traded um the talks with Ottawa have intensified uh belief is from two or three different sources that he would wave his no trade to go to Ottawa it would be willing to extend there as well so we’ll see if that gets worked out um of course I’m recording this video on on Sunday I think the 20 uh 23rd of June so you know obviously there’s um hopefully by time this hits YouTube that that you know that trade could have even happened there’s been a lot of talks uh obviously I’ll update things if if it does but uh the goalie situation definitely going to look different next year for sure Swan’s getting a big contract that’s their biggest biggest question and their biggest work of uh off season is getting swam and extended and then moving allmark there’s no doubt about it um but what’s the return for allmark it could be their own first round pick which was traded away and has bounced around a few times ended up with the Senators now so could they offer the brooms their first round pick back for allar uh there’s some talk about Jacob Cher maybe being involved in the deal I’m not 100% sold that that could be what it is um but we will see I think they’re more focused on improving the forwards and improving the center position than they are adding on the blue line but that’s my opinion um Jake de Brusque again will he be back or will he be gone via free agency uh I don’t know that there’s going to be enough money after they pay San and after they add to the center position I don’t know that there’s going to be a lot of money to pay de Brusque and I think that because of that there’s a good chance he does leave uh you know obviously he was a drafted and developed player back from the 2015 draft when they had three consecutive first round picks he’s the only one that’s really made anything of himself in the NHL out of those three players and now looks like he’s going to be walking but um I guess it’s always possible he returns cuz maybe they make other moves to free up money but when you look at their roster it’s hard to imagine exactly what they could do to make that happen uh so I just think that the likelihood of him returning are probably pretty slim um like I said ly Holm appears to be a bigger priority for them to try to Target and then we’ll kind of see but obviously bringing in ly Holm moving allmark signing San and then after that you’re looking at some depth options that to me is what your kind of main expectations are around the Bruins because after you do all that you know like I said you’re going to you get 21 million in space you sign linol let’s say and you pay San you’re going to be down to probably $67 million you have a couple of contracts and that one $1.5 million range and then you you know you kind of leave a little bit for uh so you’re not too Tapped Out uh will the Bruins have a difficult time remaining in the hunt next year I don’t I don’t know I think they can be probably comparable to this year but obviously with Swan taking on a bigger workload that’s going to be the big task for Swan he’s been really good now for a while and I don’t think there’s any reason to think that will not continue but he hasn’t been able to been a guy that’s had to play 60 65 games so you know will they give him that big of a workload and is there any chance that the bigger workload affects his results that’s a question they have to ask themselves I don’t know that it would but it’s possible um every goal is a little bit different so at the end of the day I don’t know they said they they could end up getting back into the first round with the allmark deal that’s remotely possible as well or do they maybe trade allar get the first round pick back and maybe that pick itself gets flipped again for something else again hard to say but the Bruins do have some interesting questions that they have to face this off season for sure um but it’s all around the goalies as the team has been for the last couple years they have been their backbone so we will see what happens obviously trading allar to Ottawa if it happens they’re going to make you know somebody else in division stronger uh the Ottawa centers are making a push to try to get in the playoffs it be interesting there is word that if they make that trade they may take Anton forsberg back and he could be the backup to San next year if that deal does end up taking place so let me know what your thoughts are and your expectations for the Boston Bruins in the upcoming offseason to get ready for the 2425 NHL campaign uh let me know your thoughts on that down in the comments we’ll talk further a few more teams to go in this series and all the news and rumors around the entire NHL it’s going to be a very busy week lots of content so make sure you stay tuned and stick around I’ll catch you next time [Music]

  1. This is my favorite hockey channel. You dont fluff around. So many other channels take so long to get to the point its annoying. Keep it coming, thanks!

  2. Center depth is not the need. Not even a little bit. They factually have one of the biggest groups of centers in the league right now. Coyle, Zacha, Geekie, Frederic, Boqvist, Beecher, Merk, Farinachi. They have a ton of depth at center. What they need is a 1c period. Zacha or Coyle would be fine as a 2c, you have a ton of options for 3c or 4c. Depth was an issue. They've solved that issue. Same thing with right d. A few years ago that was a huge issue. Now they have 3 good rights in the nhl and providences best three d are all rights. Now it's actually left d they are lacking depth at.

  3. Hate the Bruins as much as anybody but it's a very well ran organization. You have to love the type of players they bring in along with the business model…it's the opposite of my team. Cheers from Ottawa🍁
