Trevor Zegras back on the trade market, could the Sabres make the move?

we got a winner take all game seven in the Stanley Cup Final and we have a couple of Sabers trade rumors to get to as we kick off draft week here on the lock on Sabers [Music] podcast your locked on Sabers your daily podcast on the Buffalo Sabers part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and thanks for making lock on sabers is your first listen every day we are free and available wherever you get your podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more it’s the playoffs wind down the Sports Stop sporting Sports don’t stop uh but this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with Boost or bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long visit fanduel.com lockon to get started sneaky Jo Yosi on today’s show lot to get to we’ve got a couple of Sabers trade rumors that will kick off draft week for us we’ll get plenty in on prospects throughout the week leading up to Thursday and then of course after we’ll spend a lot of time of course on the guys that they select hotti kakach will be a part of this week from lockd on NHL prospects so we’ll get into all of that but I think it’s going to be a big trade week in the NHL and I expect the Sabers to be involved we’ll start that off with a couple of rumors that we saw today one from Dave pegot of the fourth period another one Chad D diminus tweeted out an idea that he’s heard thrown out there that the Sabers and the capitals could be talking I’ve got a thought on what that might be and zis is an idea here we go again this is like the third summer in a row where this guy is seemingly available Anaheim should just do it already you clearly don’t want this guy long term every year we’re talking about him there’s a reason why we’re talking about him and the sabers uh there was a connection made this morning so we’ll kind of revisit zis as an idea what his season looked like how different he is a trade commodity this year as opposed to last year when we would have talked about him on this show I’ve got a couple of texts from our listeners as well on the zis idea so yeah lot to get to on today’s show uh of course it is the night of game s and I between the Oilers and the Panthers Edmonton roaring back down three nothing in the series clearly figured something out have been able to free up their offense that was pretty much neutralized in the first three games of the series games four five and six the panther the Panthers have been outscored 18 to5 by the Edmonton Oilers the Oilers have been awesome these games haven’t even really been close as they have been battling through here to get to a game seven in fact Florida was only within one goal of Edmonton for 12 minutes of the last three games they have been no match in the last 10 days so what do we get tonight Back Against The Wall Florida team that I think is a more complete hockey team and is the best all-around hockey team the whole season they get a home game seven and now they have to be desperate or Edmonton who looks Unstoppable at the moment looks like Florida has no answers for currently has the better goenda percentage under two goals per game allowed he’s been great but Browski meanwhile since the third period of game three has a 756 save percentage horrendous huge reason why we’ve made it all the way here to game seven so I don’t really know what to expect I could really see it going either way um I’m rooting for Edmonton I’ve definitely landed on rooting for Edmonton let’s see the history let’s see the Legacy game from Conor McDavid let’s see him enter into a different realm sports or hockey Mount Rushmore type of candidacy for McDavid one of the best of all time let’s see it magical run doing something that nobody has ever done you have to go all the way back to the 40s to see somebody do what the Oilers are about to do and McDavid has really led the way I know he had no points in game six but eight points in the previous two games combined he is going to win the con spite kind of amazing that his odds go at FanDuel from plus 350 before game six to win the con Smite excuse me minus 350 he was the favorite to no points in game six for him but they win the game and he shoots up to minus 5,000 so like he’s gonna win it undoubtedly McDavid is going to win the K Smite no matter the result in game seven so there’s a chance he becomes the first player since JS shagar to win the K Smite in a losing effort uh I think that will be deserved he’s putting up historic type of production that the likes of only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux have put up and that is what really separates him from anyone else that’s really played in this era more than Crosby more than even McKennon who I think is probably the second best player in the world um more than Joe thoron or even I go vkin is a little different for this because it’s goals specifically but everyone else what separates McDavid what you can really look at even your eyes will my eyes tell me he’s the best player I’ve ever seen uh as someone that grew up in the uh in the early 2000s late 90s best player I’ve ever seen when he is constantly flirting with records that only Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky have that’s when you know that this guy is the best of his generation because in this generation it is undoubtedly harder to put up those type of number numbers 42 points in a playoff is not as hard when the goalies don’t know how to play their position back in 1985 where they’re falling all over themselves it’s a lot harder in today’s game it’s more bogged down it’s not as wide open the speed and skill of the defenseman is of course a lot better and is caught up and really the biggest difference more than anything is the goal tending goalies know how to play the position now the equipment’s got bigger of course as well so McDavid doing it in this era is what is making it even more impressive his stock his star power I think across Sports will rise in a big way if he’s able to accomplish this tonight I think you’re gonna have one of the highest rated NHL games in decades because you’ve got everything working together that makes it to me arguably the most important hockey game of my lifetime what for like a league-wide sportwide conversation what’s bigger maybe you could argue USA Canada in the 2010 Olympics right maybe you could argue Vancouver and Boston I wouldn’t but that might be what’s next because you had a game seven win or takehome in Vancouver a franchise that had never won the cup against Boston who had not won the cup in decades at themselves so that one’s not bad um beyond that though like those are the only two I could even come up with that might even compare to this you’ve got alltime comeback three nothing down game seven the star of the sport putting together this comeback himself um you’ve got a franchise in Florida that’s got everything on the line where they either win the title tonight or they become an alltime joke everyone will always remember they blew a three nothing series lead if they don’t win tonight like that franchise’s reputation for decades is on the line tonight in Florida on top of all the rest of it you’ve got this game on ABC so it’s going to be in front of as many people as possible that’s where you’re going to get the highest ratings with it being on ABC so I think it’s the biggest hockey game of my lifetime and I expect it to crush ratings that we’ve seen in the past and I cannot wait and I think the Oilers are going to win it I don’t trust for Bros right now the way he’s played the last three nights I think that Florida looks mentally shook it that can happen when you blow a lead like that but I don’t see anybody on Florida showing up night toight other than barkov and Evan Rodriguez and no offense to Evan Rodriguez but he can’t be your second best player in a series kachu kind of disappeared at times Reinhardt has disappeared in this series um you’ve had of course uh Veri has disappeared in this series he got replaced on the top power play unit uh today at practice Vladimir tereno looks like he’s going to go up Montour has disappeared in this series uh I think forsling has struggled a lot in this series I think the only players that have pulled their weight it’s amazing that they’re actually even here game seven it’s more so the last three games but barkov Rodriguez have done it and I don’t really think anybody else really has lived up to what they should be in this series so game s 8:00 can’t wait uh and uh we’ll talk about it of course after it happens so when we come back let’s get to the Sabers Trevor zis is back in the rumor mill and the Sabers were mentioned we’ll get to that when we come back here in the lockdown Sabers podcast we are presented here on the show by FanDuel Sportsbook so tonight is your last hockey game of the season so definitely a sad day for that but there’s still time to BL place your con Smite Futures if you want to take a long shot bet at somebody um you’ve course got soccer going full speed right now with the Euro and the Copa America if you want to bet on the US to win their next game that’s Thursday against Panama you can check out the odds for that over at FanDuel as the playoffs wind down we get fewer games and the sports aren’t sporting like I want them to but FanDuel keeps me going all you got to do open the app dream up bets anytime that I’m in the mood and this summer vuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long so head over to fanduel.com SL lockon and start making the most out of your summer FanDuel an official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball back on the lockdown Sabers podcast thanks for making us your first listen every day lots of draft coverage coming this week we get hotti kakach lock on HL prospects in along the way as well as uh dive through some of the mocks that have the Sabers taking anyone from Tisha ginla jerom ain’s son at Wing there’s some right shot defensemen that I want to jump into a little bit because that is a position of weakness in their organizational depth chart in fact if you look at right shot defenseman Henry Yoki Haru and there’s not much after that there’s not a lot Conor Clifton of course um but that’s more of a veteran of obviously they don’t really have any upand cominging right shot defenseman so we’ll get to some of that stuff of course uh coming up this week on the lock on Sabers podcast you can always chime in if you’re not a texter already sign up for our text Club go to join sub tex.com loock on saers and today we were talking about in the group chat a little bit had some fans and some listeners uh chime in on the idea of Trevor zis in blue and gold playing for the Sabers because once again he is back in the rumor mill he and Anaheim must not get along or somebody clearly does not want that relationship to continue because it’s three years in a row now that we’ve heard whispers about him a player that his career started great top 10 pick you know he showed up in his first full season had 61 points he had highlight real goals he was a YouTube sensation he got himself on the cover of the NHL video game and okay star in the making he was on the all rookie team in 2022 he was second in the cder voting that year and what he follow that up with 23 goals 65 points all right 21 years old two 60o seasons already second and CER voting star power because of all this the crazy highlights what could go wrong what why wouldn’t you want to pay this guy for whatever reason Anaheim hasn’t wanted to do it and I think I have the answer to it for whatever reason but they haven’t wanted to do it and at present he has two years remaining on his contract so is he back on the trade rumor mill Dave pegoda the fourth period.com plugged an Insider he writes this morning that zis in is kind of back in the trade market and he mentions eight teams at least but he mentions eight teams that have shown interest in acquiring Trevor zis of the eight teams and you have Chicago and Ottawa and plenty of others but of those eight the sabes are mentioned as one of the teams that have shown interest in Trevor zis so let’s explore zis the idea and the biggest difference in my opinion for him as a trade Target from last year at this time to this year at this time from when we last talked about him number one let’s start with the player himself he is 23 years old he is gifted offensively he’s not a big player average size 6′ 185 this is absolutely not the guy that is tougher to play against the full two-way 200 foot player that’s going to make the Savers more versatile that is not what Trevor zis is zis is offense offense offense offense he is a bad defensive player just flat out doesn’t mean he can’t get better he just turned 23 he’ll fill into his body a little bit more he could get better but so far he’s been a bad defensive player but he’s been an amazing offensive player the amount of chances he DW that he creates the Zone entries that he has he’s able to carry the puck he’s able to pass the puck he’s got a good finishing ability as well reminder he’s put up those couple of 60o seasons on a very bad Anaheim team where he’s not surrounded by a lot of talent at all a team that rarely has the puck because they’re so bad so his numbers might be a little bit higher on a better team in fact they probably will be I think but again you’re not getting the type of third line Center that you might think unless because zis is a centerman who has played some Wing too of course can he be a top six centerman and maybe Dylan cousins kind of be like is like a a 2B type of Center where you have three top lines all maybe play near equal uh ice time between Thompson zis and cousins the fit would be a little bit weird he’s a good player he’s a very good player and I don’t want to say he doesn’t fit for what the Sabers need because offense and power play I don’t want to say the Sabers don’t need that last year they needed to score goals and they needed to produce on the power play they’re probably about to lose Jeff Skinner who was third on the team in goals they got to replace those somewhere they lost middle stat but in that trade toam and he produced a lot of points like for a team that didn’t produce a lot of offense two of their top five six scorers are going to be gone and they’re going to need some replacement on that and they’re going to need to improve the power play so zis as a Bonafide top six forward I guess it does make some sense even if it’s not the perfect fit and we have seen different insiders thrown around Elliot Freedman for one that one of the things on the Sabers to-do list is a top six forward and maybe zus would suffice that now the biggest difference to me between last year and this year I think the price probably has come down on zis he didn’t have a good year he he hasn’t had a good 12 months he had a contract dispute with Anaheim that landed on him in a three-year Bridge deal 5.75 million which he’s got two years left on so contract by the way great two years left 5.75 million he’s an RFA at the end of it so you still retain his rights through that contract control beautiful gotta love it if you’re a team acquiring him like the Sabres would be also the ducks in of course it being a bridge deal with zis did not give him any trade protection no trade protection is Big that makes it a lot easier for the Sabers to get a deal done when a guy can’t outright Nix the trade so that works too um where this idea is different than last year is price he only played 31 games last year injuries that contract dispute beginning of the year I mentioned but injuries kept him out of more than 50 games and in the games he played did not produce offense nearly to the same degree did not produce scoring chances did not produce High danger quality chances nearly as much as he had in the previous two seasons it ended up in 15 points six goals nine assists in 31 games play not a great season at all and of course as I mentioned not a very good defensive player so wasn’t doing a lot for the Ducks last year last year I might have thought this is a hockey trade this is Dylan cousins this is Middle stat this is a tra some trade like that not power but some defenseman now because of the year he just had and the drama Anaheim has continued to endure with not try not figuring out in their own right if they want to pay this guy or not I think that you could get him now for a pick and a prospect like now I might consider the possibility that you could trade for Trevor zis for the 11th overall pick and one of your top prospects is very manageable is a very reasonable idea that Anaheim could very well accept uh you want to throw Roseanne in you want to throw Noah osland in and you pair him with 11 and then you get Trevor zeris in return I think that’s a reasonable trade idea Sabers could get done with the Anaheim Ducks so I like the idea I would not say no to Talent like this I think he’s a little bit overrated because he’s got the Highlight Reel plays we all remember the flip off his Stick Over the net that he scored against that he set up a goal against the Sabers two years ago he’s got two Michigan goals he’s the filthiest dangler in the sport it’s crazy he’s a Tik Tock Instagram social media Sensation that you know kids want to emulate that uh some of the stuff that he’s done so it’s he’s a cool player he’s an awesome player to watch he’s not as good as how big his stardom is though which can still be okay he’s not as good as someone that deserves to be on the video game cover he’s not as good as someone that has all the views the viral hits that he does but just because he might be a little bit overrated doesn’t mean he’s not still a very good player I think he’s a very good player just don’t expect him to come be a 100o player don’t expect him to come be a superstar for you he’s a very he’s just a darn good top six forward that’s what I see Trevor zus as and that would absolutely have me saying yes to him as an idea if uh if the Sabres and the Ducks could work out uh compensation so that’s zis we’ll keep an eye on that maybe anything more comes with that one other rumor I wanted to touch on on today’s show the capitals should we be keeping an eye on the capitals we’ll get to that when we come back here on the locked on Sabers podcast we are presented on the show by eBay Motors passion drive and patience the formula for winning championships is also what keeps your ride or die making us your first listen one other trade rumor just to mention today here on the show it’s nothing super concrete or even that specific but an idea that has me thinking about possibilities you’ve got Chad D Dominus one of our favorites expected Buffalo tweeted out over the weekend doesn’t have a lockdown or doesn’t want to get in trouble for naming names or whatever but thre out there on Twitter kind of keep an eye on the Sabers in the capitals as an idea the capitals were active this weekend uh they had that big trade going into the weekend where they sent Darcy keer away they brought in Pierre Luke dubba don’t understand why they did that at all all dubba long bad contract keer short bad contract why would you go for five more years or four more years of a bad contract when they’re both bad contracts I don’t understand it they’re pouring Assets in though to break the record for oetkin that’s to me the only explanation for why they made that trade so keep an eye on Washington if you look at Washington you still can on cap friendly by the way until they steal it away from us maybe we could trade for cap friendly who do you want who makes sense who’s a reasonable idea for what the Sabers would be looking for and for who Washington might be willing to unload and one name that I would Circle in red ink because Nicholas Backstrom is not officially retired I personally don’t know where his recovery stands and whether there is a plan for him to return I know there were rumors a couple months ago that he probably will never play again but that’s not official maybe he comes back at 36 off that hip injury that Patrick Kane just came back off I don’t know it may it’s probably unlikely but maybe there’s still a chance if you look at their depth chart though if you look at trading for pier Luke dubas a top six centerman right who could they poach because duah is there now well would they be willing to trade away Dylan stro Dylan stro that’s an idea by the way Chad’s the one who had the Sabers capitals thing Chad has been all over Dylan stro as an idea as a perfect idea for the Sabers all offseason so to take from him a little bit here I love this idea I think stro as your third line Center is as good as you could do this is coming from somebody that has never liked Dylan stroes game have never been a big fan of it all the way back to me my brother and my buddies driving down to eie to see McDavid play 11 years ago watching 16 17 and 18yearold Dylan strowman Juniors I was never impressed he would put up numbers as the second line Center and eerie but never wowed me didn’t have the foot speed had decent finishing ability decent hands kind of a decent allaround player but in juniors You’re Expecting exhilarating and you just didn’t have that when he went third overall in that draft I was adamant that Mitch Marner was a better Prospect and that has come to fruition absolutely but despite my thought that stro might be just an outright total bust which early on it’s started to look that way but has really come around in the last two years in Washington his age 25 and 26 seasons have been by far the best he’s now though got three straight 20 goal Seasons two straight 60 point Seasons 65 two years ago and 67 last year for Washington he has gone a decent contract he’s got four years left at $5 million per year not bad at all at age 27 years old if Washington would be able to would willing to trade him for futures that guys that might be ready to join the NHL right now they’re a very old team maybe they want to throw some youth in there stro as a middle six center for the Savers makes a ton of sense he’s also developed into a very good defensive player so you’d be getting that defensive style center that is I mean he’s not like a selky guy but he’s a better defensive Center I think right now than both Thompson and cousins are certainly cousins so strome’s going to give you that he’s very good at driving offense um I think he’s kind of that allaround player that makes a lot of sense for what the Savers would be looking for I’d be very excited if they could get their hands on Dylan stro what would a trade look like for Dylan stro I mean it’s kind of the go-to right the go-to for saber trade ideas for almost any veteran like this is first round pick one of your top prospects and in this case maybe you have to throw a third piece in maybe you have to throw a pton Krebs in as a throwin so just a hypothetical pick 11 Noah osland and Payton Krebs does that get the job done that’s a lot it’s almost the ecle package but it’s lacking the tuck piece so you could argue whether that’s worth it I think Krebs though remember the big difference there is when they traded with Vegas Krebs was the number one Prospect in their organization and now krebs’s play in the last two years I think has relegated him to more of a throw in so the value there is certainly different than it’s been and you don’t have tuck in it um that’s a reasonable idea that’s a bit of an overpay but if strome’s on the market you might have to overpay because of the quality of the player so that’s the idea for me is uh those three all right it’s going to do it for us we’ll get more Prospect talk in hottie Kash will join us you got the game seven tonight enjoy the game we might get a saber raising the cup second uh aoso is going to enter the lineup kyoso is going back in for game seven uh some fun trivia for you fin goes off there some fun trivia for you five former sabes members of the Sabers organization have been handed the cup first Eric Johnson in Colorado got handed the cup first after the captain uh Scotty Bowman when he was in Detroit Robin regir when he was in Los Angeles Rob Nemer in Anaheim and then way back in the 80s Steve Smith with the Oilers former assistant coach of the Sabers from a couple of years ago also was handed the cup first aoso could become the sixth I think he might I if I were guessing right now Florida wins The Cup tonight I think aoso is getting the cup second uh if Edmonton wins it maybe Newen Hopkins because he’s been there so long but I think Oso really might get the cup second uh if they win the Cup tonight so enjoy game seven we’ll talk about it we’ll get the draft rolling uh with some Prospect talk coming up on our next show as well thanks for listening to lockon Sabers part of your lockon podcast Network your team every day

  1. thanks again joe. Hey Quick Q: Wondering if you could do a segment this summer talking about the offsides rules / review. been watching some Euro's and i think offsides reviews are ruining the game. I think the nhl and other sports need to go back to it being a judgement call and fans need to live with the decisions that are made by a human there. if its too close to call, then its too close to call. less offsides = more excitement and more goal scoring. theres nothing more deflating than getting a goal called back over a tiny offside margin or one that happend far ahead of the goal scoring play. whats the point of even having linesmen on the ice then? they are just in the way. think its a discussion worth having.

  2. I hope we trade for zegras, sign him to a huge deal and he gets like 30 points 😂😂 resign girgenbum and okposo too !!!! Leadership !!!!!

  3. Absolutely ZERO interest in Zegras! He is OVERRATED with a me me atitude! He is also like Skinner, a HUGE defensive liability!
Would be interested in Dylan Strome but cant see Washington trading him especially if Backstrom has to retire due to injury.

  4. Lets get stupid?

Maybe Skinner to Washington is an idea that works for everyone. If Washington is just going to all in on OV's chase for the record, then having an offensive minded player on the team like Skinner might make a lot of sense. Skinner can do Skinner things because nobody cares in the Capitals organization cares about a being a winning organization right now.

  5. I wanted Zegras and Hellebuyck last year. Still want hellebuyck but don’t know if I want Zegras still. Get 1-2 veteran forwards. Maybe a goalie. Let Levi develop 1 more year.

  6. Now why would the Sabres trade for Zegras when they need players who are mentally tough, physical, and miserable to play against? Because young kids think Zegras is cool? I'm hoping and praying this is Joe's ridiculous line of thinking and NOT the thinking of the General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres.

  7. Yeah, bring in a locker room cancer and a player hated by almost every player in the league. Seems like a great idea.

  8. Enough with Zegras already. Undersized diva who is a defensive liability. I’d rather take Pavel Buchnevich or Travis Konecny.

  9. No. Nooooo. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no…. nnnnoooooooooooooooo.

    Nope. Nada. Nunca. No thanks.

    Pass. Next. Denied…
