4 of the last 5 Stanley Cup Champions and 7 of the last 10 finalists are from income tax free states, out of 6 teams in the league.

Remember when the NHL told the Leafs they weren’t allowed to let their players use their offseason facilities? How about when they told the Leafs they couldn’t use referees during training camp?

If these were too big of a competitive advantage against the teams that couldn’t afford to do the same things, surely the NHL will take end the 5-10 million advantage in their restrictive salary cap that these teams have. No?

  1. (Tinfoil hat) Bettman wants to expand the game in areas that have never seen natural ice and snow.

Stop with this. The players nor the owners want to fix this so nothing will be done about it. Why is hockey the only league that fans complain about this?

But wait. Reddit nerds have told me The tax difference is a hoax and it doesn’t matter

  4. Add to that, the narrative that good players who win cups take discounts on their contracts. Then you look at the states where these cup winning teams are from and that narrative looks a little bit more bullshit.

In any case, the way the salary cap is structured sucks overall.

Can someone explain why this only seems to be an issue in the NHL as opposed to other leagues?

The cap should have tax levelling to negate any such advantage.

The infuriating thing about it is that it goes hand-in-hand with revenue sharing.

No Toronto, you cannot pay players more money. But you must give your money to low revenue teams in low income tax markets. So they can effectively pay players more money.
